Interior decorating is something that I'm interested in, but I don't think I have the flair or patience to get into it full-time. Interior designers actually do a lot of measuring, planning and sketching behind the scenes, things we don't normally see on TV. I love matching colors and I've redecorated a few rooms in my parent's house so far, but I think everyone is capable of decorating to some extent.

Decorating is pretty much my life. I love looking around the apartment wondering what I could improve next. But as someone already mentioned, it's not the most important of jobs. It'd be great fun IF you were decorating for people with your type of taste. Since most people that want to re-decorate want a say on what it should look like finished it kind of takes that whole air of freedom away from the work. And even if you get your own way all the way you'd always have that little nagging feeling of "Wouldn't it had been better if..." or "I shouldn't have had..." etc.

I find this occupation fascinating and looks as if would be very fun. When I was in high school I wanted to go to art school and major in Interior Decorating but changed my mind, didn't want to go away for school. At least I get to decorate my own house.

Believe it or not, not everyone has the ability to decorate. Some even realize this and gleefully seek much needed help. Extremely skilled artists, dancers and singers have the ability to make their talents look very natural and easy to do. In reality, they take years to practice and perfect. In the same way, the accomplished professional decorator will leave his or her touch. In many cases, this effort will be subconsciously appreciated while consciously being taken for granted. Consciously or subconsciously, we are all affected daily positively or negatively by the atmosphere of our surroundings. So, whether or not it is always obvious that a professional decorator has had a hand in something, much of the world is a more pleasing place for it. I do agree with Wiggum on one point though. The skill of a decorator as well as most other aesthetic considerations in life would sink to the bottom of the list of importance in the extreme case of a nuclear war. Since we would probably all be dead or well on our way, I doubt any of the other people on this list would be of much use either. But if I ever did live long enough to see the bleakness of a nuclear winter, the former beauty of this world would be one of the things I would miss most.

Here's my theory on Interior Decorating: it's the most worthless occupation in the modern world. To prove my theory I offer the post-apocalyptic test - if the human race is trying to survive after a world-wide nuclear war, what kind of person do we need LESS than an Interior Decorator? Doctors, obviously, would be in high demand. Lawyers would still be needed to help us settle disputes. Mechanics, teachers, businesspeople, architects - they'd all fill important post-apocalyptic roles. But do we really need someone to tell us which fabric looks best on our couch? I think not.
