Having been forced to grow up on Hilton Head through my middle school and high school years, I can't offer much insight from the point of view of a tourist but I can tell you my impression as a former resident. Completely uninteresting, unless you like a beach town with nothing more to offer than the beach itself. Unlike real towns, there is very little culture there, the nightlife is mediocre at best, and it is mostly inhabited by wealthy and upper middle class people who fled whatever part of the country they came from so that they could call themselves "islanders" and live in gated communities to keep out the small population of actual native islanders who's families have lived there for generations but were not blessed with nearly as much wealth as the newer inhabitants. Savannah, GA, which is only about a 40 minute drive from Hilton Head, is a much more interesting town with a flare for the arts and nightlife and just more interesting things to see in do in general. Savannah also has a pretty nice beach on Tybee Island if the beach is your thing.

Boring in an overwhelming way. Unless you're some wasp wannabe, there's simply no charm in visiting this white southern elitist community (an oxymoron). Everything is second rate, and you spend your vacation wondering when they'll roll out the surprise that your money paid for.

Hilton Head is a fantastic tourist destination. It is divided into six "plantations" that are gated communities. Crime is almost non existant, unlike Florida. The beaches are really nice. For golf and tennis, Hilton Head has few rivals. There are nature trails and tours to other coastal sea islands. The shops and restaurants are first rate. Easy day trips from Hilton Head are Savannah 30 miles to the south and Charleston 70 miles to the north. Hilton Head is a great tourist destination. Fun, safe, with something for everyone.

Well, I'm not a big fan of golfing, so Hilton Head just doesn't do much for me. The beach itself is really flat and long, and the sand (when I was there, at least) was kind of dirty and clumped together - more like sandy mud than the powdery white sand I think of when I try to picture a perfect beach. And there were hardly any waves at all. Hilton Head is also really tourist-oriented, and I felt like maybe I should come back when I'm 60 years old, wearing black socks up to my knees, and obsessing about making a little white ball drop into a small hole.
