Jarhead role! The General in The Rock. This is a highlight for me as anybody who can be a good Jarhead gets a five and this guy is good in anything.

Is this guy underrated or what? He is great in everything he does.

I cannot believe that Ed Harris is this far down the list (#48 as I type). Harris is one of the finest actors working today, and apparently one of the most underrated. His small role in Enemy at the Gates is a great example of his appeal and talent. He played a Nazi officer who proves to be what you would expect from a Nazi officer, but he never takes it over the top. He makes you see things from his charecters perspective, and while it falls short of being sympathetic to the Nazis, you understand that to this officer he is doing his job. The Truman Show is another example of taking the part of the bad guy and making him human. It was an understated performace, which is exactly what the role needed in my opinion. He could have played it as a mad man, twisting knobs and playing God. Instead, he was more of a father figure, albeit an overprotective, controlling father. One role that I think is over looked is his part in The Rock. Harris brings depth and sympathy to his charecter that is not often seen in action movies. It might well be his best role. Excellent actor, and deserves to be higher on the list.

Totally underrated - one of the best actors of his generation. Apollo 13, The Firm, The Truman Show, the list goes on and on.

One of my favorites. In an earlier time, I would hear people exclaim how Charles Durning could play any role brilliantly. Well Ed Harris is kind of like that too. His best work is when he plays a spaceman.

He is pretty good. I liked him a lot in the Truman Show.

His portrayal of a psychopathic serial killer in JUST CAUSE (with Blair Underwood and Sean Connery) should've won him an Oscar!

When, oh when, is this man going to receive his well-deserved Oscar? He is one of my favorite character actors, and I have enjoyed his work since he appeared in The Right Stuff. Ed Harris is not gorgeous, yet he dominates every scene he is in. He was so compelling in A Beautiful Mind that it was shock to discover that his character was merely a figment of Nash's tormented imagination. Recently, I saw him in The Hours and he was utterly heartbreaking as the poet dying of AIDS. I would never have imagined that Harris could excel in such a role;his success in portraying the poet illustrates his enormous range. How many actors can you think of who have brilliantly portrayed astronauts, secret agents, and tormented poets?

a very fine actor..very underrated

I think his baldness makes him kinda cute...when otherwise I probably wouldn't even notice his mediocre acting skills. I did however enjoy him in Stepmom. His supporting character made the movie so much better than it was.

I just watched Beautiful Mind last night, and he was awesome. I also really like the Abyss.

A personal favourite of mine. A real man's man type of actor, without resorting to cheap tough guy heroics. He is one of the few actors who can convincingly play either good guys or villains. I understand it is very difficult to play a good guy who isn't a tough, macho, gun-toting cowboy, and still be interesting, but Harris injects humanity and imperfection into his good guy roles. Even his bad guys aren't totally evil (except maybe for Major Koenig in Enemy at the Gates) but have understandable reasons for their misanthropy.

Puffed up, short, silly martinet who plays at pretending to be a "man" of depth and substance. Unredeemable wimp.
lindaknewc 07/13/2001
Duh....I have no idea what 1 & 2 are trying to say, but they clearly have not seen Mr. Harris at work. Good grief people, he's gorgeous, his characters are smart, tough, (and sometimes gentle) men I think would be fascinating to know. With the exception of Places in the Heart, he tends to portray a devoted husband and a man full of honor and integrity, though he sometimes does the wrong thing for the right reason. These are not one-dimensional characters. They are "real" (particularly in The Right Stuff and Apollo 13; those characters were actually real people) and he plays protagonist and antagonist with equal talent and charm. Sometimes I'll watch a movie just because he's in it, and I haven't been disappointed yet.
