Hell, I speed in reverse. I'm a student of the Sammy Hagar School of Driving. I've hit one-fifty in a vette, one-thirty on a Harley and even managed to squeeze out one-twenty-two in a Miata loaded with ten cases of Pepsi. ZOOM-ZOOM...

You may or may not get to your destination quicker by speeding. If your destination is not intended to be the morgue then I recommend slowing down. Besides, speeding tickets can be expensive and so will the gas you burn by doing those jack rabbit starts.

The best rush you get is doing 90 in a 45. The only bad part about speeding is those damn smokies waiting to catch you.

Very bad habit, people just don't consider the the consequences of speeding. There's really no reason, it's a difference of minutes.

Guilty as charged, though I don't do it because I'm in a hurry, I do it because it's fun. While I may be putting myself in a slightly higher degree of danger, I won't do it if it puts another driver at risk. I do alot of rural driving, with lots of straightaways and very little traffic. It also helps to know your vehicles limits and your limits as a driver before you decide to engage in speeding, you can't defy physics.

Guilty of this one, but not intentionally. The louder my music gets, the faster I seem to go. And I like my music loud! I have been pulled over for this twice now and managed to get out of it both times.

speeding can be a bad habit. i can see going very fast in a busy area especially in a school district could be bad. But i sometimes question how speed limits are set. There are some areas in my town i cannot believe why we have to go so slow. Most people call them speed trap areas for the police to issue tickets.{I sometimes agree}i would not support going way too fast i just question how certain speed limits are set that seem too low. I get more annoyed at times with the slowpokes who pull out ahead and then go below the speed limit. There are causing accidents too.

I think that the definition of speeding is somewhat subjective, really. Local or state government sets a spped limit based on criteria I am not really sure of in most cases (some cases, such as heavily residential areas, are obvious enough, but when it comes to rural or highway limits, I'm not convinced all the time). I say speeding is subjective because I believe that there are many factors to consider, including but not limited to the skill and experience level of the driver, road and traffic conditions, weather and visibility, and the performance (and braking) capabilities of the vehicle being driven. I guess I drive over the posted speed limit most of the time, but I usually don't consider the speed that I'm traveling at to be excessive for the conditions. Slow drivers tend to irritate me, but that neither makes them wrong nor me right.

Speeding isn't really a bad habit, because I would guess many people sometimes do it. Now speeding at 75 miles an hour in a 25 mile zone where children are nearby, might be a problem. However there are worst driver habits(as Andrew Scott pointed out) such as drunkards, those so high they can't see straight, those falling asleep at the wheel, aggressive drivers, dimwits who don't strap their children in properly or not at all, idiots who talk on their cell phone and pay no attention at all, idiots who distract themselves by putting on make-up, brush their hair or eat. People should practice good common sense driving skills, a slight step on the gas sometimes is ok, but the full throttle pedal to the metal is not. One should use good judgement.

Speeding is a very dangerous and life-threatening act that could not only be a danger to the one who is speeding, but to others as well. Drive responsibly and the road will be kind to you.

There are unsafe driving behaviors far worse than mild speeding, a common habit for many of us. Drunk driving and very aggressive driving are obvious examples. I believe driving while sleepy or driving while eating a fast food burger pose greater risk than the typical driver who speeds a little. That is not to say following reasonable speed limits isn't important, especially where children might wander. And habitually reckless speeding is the worst. But I have sympathies for all the relatively innocent motorists who fall prey to a tough "speed trap". Typical speeding might make you more of a danger to yourself and others, but our focus should be directed toward preventing the clearest road dangers instead of on overzealous ticketing.

on the freeway with a limit of 65 i'll go about 130 to 140, the freeway i get on has like 7 or 8 automobiles in sight on avg, not very busy. on the interstate with the normal 70 limit ill go about 95, on rural roads with a 55-65 limit ill go about 85, city limits with 35 or 45 ill tend to go around that. 25mph zones ill just go 25 or 30 too. majority of the time speeding keeps my thoughts from wandering and getting tired and lagging with my actions. i hold the car steadier and keep from weaving within the lane better. of course i slow down for curves

I speed all the time. But I don't live in the city. I live in the adirondacks where there is nothing. You know the roads, where the animals cross, during what season the animals cross, and everything like that. Many mountainy roads aren't bad at all. And it's kind of an understanding in the area as well. For example, Route 87 that goes straight to Albany New York, the speed limit is 65, there are three lanes. 65ers are on the right... and 85ers are on the far left. It is rediculous however when people weave in and out at 90. But on my road, the speed limit starts at 55, familiar drivers go 65, some 70 if they don't mind getting a ticket. then it changes to 40 near the fairly populated areas, and people drive 55. I thoroughly believe that people driving 40 in the 55 are more dangerous drivers. They are timid and don't know what they are doing... many swerve when there isn't a need. And anxious drivers behind them are more likely to pass them as 10 miles over 40 is still legal and will get them safely passed the slower driver... however their anxiousness can cause problems, yet all as a result of the slow and timid driver.

Bulls$##%. Get in the slow lane if speeders bother you. No, I don't speed. . .but I don't look down on those who do. I just put my signal on, and move right. Relax. . .the world doesn't exits for you to cruise at 65-68mph. Let people take their chances with the law and their own lives.

This isn't that bad unless you're driving 90 everywhere you go. I think it's ridiculous to treat someone like a criminal for driving 75 in a 70. Speeding doesn't cause wrecks; carelessness, distraction, and intoxication do.

Unless you are on your way to the hospital, there is no need to speed. It is dangerous, not only for the speeder, but the people that are driving around them. You do not look cool in your sports car, traveling down a residential neighborhood at 80 mph or faster, you look like a mindless idiot with no common sense. Bottom line- SPEEDING ISN'T COOL !

I am ok with speeding as long as you know you are safe and there is no risk involved to other drivers. In other words Safe speeding is ok with me. Yesterday i got stopped by a cop for doing 70.5 MPH in a 65 MPH zone. Any ideas what i should do. This is my first ticket.

Again, I'm guilty of the 10 miles over the speed limit thing, but considering that half the people on the road seem to pass me, anyway, I guess it's not too bad. Speed itself does not kill; it is speed in conjunction with other factors that make this problematic. Factors such as: swerving in & out of lanes, tailgating, not paying attention (distraction), lacking skills and control that is required for driving faster, being under the influence, etc. The Autobahn of Germany is a good example of speed used effectively--there are no speed limits through most of the system, and though they do approximately 100mph or more, with greater variation between drivers (as in, 10 cars going 100mph with 40 cars going 65mph, and there's still not necessarily a problem). Their system must have some merits, since apparently they have far less accidents per mile driven than in America. There was a study done recently (it was on Netscape news, I can't remember who did the study) about main causes of accidents. The top ten included rubbernecking, fiddling around with the radio, talking on the cell phone (which actually was pretty low on the list, surprisingly), putting on makeup, daydreaming about the scenery, eating and drinking . . . in other words, distractions. German engineers don't understand why Americans would NEED a cup holder in the car, since one would typically require all their attention devoted to the road. Perhaps they're on to something there. I don't care if someone speeds that much, unless they're not paying full attention to their task, and as long as they're not being rude (like cutting people off). And, of course, there needs to be consideration about WHERE you're speeding--doing 70 on the interstate is one thing, doing 70 in the city with pedestrians all around is another.

This is the 21st Century it is patently absurd for the Government to limit the speed of automobiles to speeds that our Great Grand parents travel at. Our Great Grandfathers travel at 80 miles an hour in the 19th century on trains. Speed doesn't kill if the car or SUV is constructed appropriately for the speed required. The CAFÉ standards have been responsible for larger number of deaths in automobile than speeding. Lightweight cars should be restricted to only city driving and very low rate of speeds. If you want to save gas and feel smug about saving the planet, you should be driving a two cylinder micro car that can’t exceed 15 mph, which is the acceptable impact tolerance for the construction of the vehicle. So stop complaining when a Gargantuan SUV rolls over you and needs only a ding removed while you need a wing installed if you’re good. Speed in the right car is great it all most as exhilarating as having someone shooting at you.

Going above the speed limit is not necessarily dangerous. I believe that there are more dangerous things out on the road besides speeders. In fact, sometimes it's the granny driving 15 miles BELOW the speed limit on the passing lane that is more dangerous than speeding. They should be the ones racketed with the tickets. Also, jerks who cut off other drivers are more dangerous. Speeding 10 maybe even 20 miles over the speed limit isn't dangerous as long as it can be done on the road. Excessive lane changes cause accidents. Indecisiveness also causes accidents; when you make a manuver, decide quick, because it only takes a second for an accident to happen. Of course, if you're going 130 MPH in a 55 MPH zone, then you should get a ticket, from the Federal Aviation Association that is!!

Sure, if you go over 100, your basically killing yourself. But, a little speed can be little fun, me being 15. Going fast is just plain out fun, and a lot of people today know exactly what they are doing on the road.

First, read JKooks' rating on this. I basically agree with all of the things he mentioned. As long as the person can drive, it doesn't matter what speed they go. If they want to risk going around a corner at 60, let them. They will be the one's getting the ticket if they wreck, not you. The only thing I question is if idiots would use the tiny traces of common sense in their brains or if they would continue the idiot tradition in the world of driving. I do think there are limitations, such as school zones, but other roads need to increase the speed limit (especially highways), if not get rid of it in total. This isn't because I want to break laws or something moronic like that, but because I, like most people, generally am more comfortable at a speed above the given limit.

Well, here's the problem: I DO drive responsibly. In fact, I drive better at fifteen to twenty miles over the speed limit than 99% of the morons out there do below the limit. The dangers of speeding cannot be determined by arbitrarily singling out speed as a stand-alone factor. Driving ability, attention span, reaction time, head placement (again, somewhere outside of the anus is preferable), and a variety of other factors are necessary in order to determine safe versus dangerous driving. I've seen more wrecks caused by some white-knuckled old lady or soccer mom who can't seem to understand that highway driving at speeds BELOW THE MINIMUM during rush hour can be every bit as dangerous as doing 90 in a school zone. It's just more proof that speed limits should be abolished and standards for obtaining driver's licenses need to be toughened by a factor of ten - it's time to pay more attention to people who flat out suck at driving at any speed and stop punishing those of us who know what we're doing. If you can't run with the big dogs, then stay on the porch.

Speeding one or two miles over is one thing, but when you are going down the freeway passing people left and right, making it look like everyone else is standing still, then it's probably a little dangerous.
