Cal Ripken Jr. breaks Lou Gehrig's consecutive game streak 5

This was an awesome day for baseball.Cal Ripken was paid his due on this day after paying his to baseball for so long. The Barry Bonds of the baseball world could take lessons. The last time I checked Cal was not the only one who went on strike.Could he have singlehandedly stopped it?

That's all forgotten to me. I agree with Minkeydude's statement. Gehrig would still hold the record if it wasn't for that disease. Gehrig didn't care about money. He loved the baseball field. ... Ripken indeed wanted a baseball strike, 'cuz he wanted more money. ... It's a fraud that an Oriole had to overtake a Yankee record.

This was a great moment. It's just amazing and hard to believe how anyone could that. Some of the reviewers are way off, some comments are even moronic. Not a great record? That's why it took so long to break, many thought it was never going to be broken, and him and Gehrig are way ahead of everyone else. He ended the streak with 2,630 consecutives games, 15 straight years without missing a game and mostly playing shortstop! One guy says many other players could have done it but they sat out a day. So what? Fact is that they didn't, and Ripken and Gehrig are way of ahead of everyone else, so it's certainly a great record. Then another guy says it's not a big deal because they're supposed to do that anyway. What??? The important thing is that they don't! Some because they don't want to, some because they need a day off from a 162 game season, and some because they get injured and they can't! Ripken played mostly SS and kept playing for 2,630 straight games, only 1 other player in history comes close. Then the last one says it shouldn't count because they went on strike and he stopped playing! That's ridiculous, every other player stopped too, sure those greedy bastards shouldn't have gone on strike, but with everyone on strike no games were played or could be played! He played in the games he could play 2,630 consecutive times. The fact that him and Gehrig are far ahead of everyone else proves that it is a great record.

this record is not that big a deal. it's like rewarding a kid for going to school everyday. why reward them for doing something they're supposed to do. ballplayers are supposed to do just that--play ball.

I refer to this moment as 'The night I forgave baseball'. This was after the lockout, after the strike, after a lot of bad blood. I had sworn off baseball, and then the streak became interesting. On the night he broke the record, there was the usual presentations, but what really got me was when Joe Dimaggio, who played with Lou Gehrig, no less, came out for a few brief remarks. No other sport has a sense of history like that, where they knew who to put on the field for maximum effect. It's just like in 1999 when Ted Williams came back to Fenway Park for the all star game.

It's a good record, not a great record, and it wasn't a great moment. The anticipation of it was overblown to a ridiculous degree.

Cal Ripken, in my mind, did not truly break Lou Gehrig's record. Gehrig was a true hero and only quit because he was deathly ill. Cal Ripken was pro-strike, and in fact was one of the key speakers for the strike. That rich b@stard did not play for the love of the game like Gehrig, but for the love of his wallet.

A record that will never be broken, and to do it from a position leads many players on the DL every year, it was simply amazing.

First of all this isnt really a moment its a record. Second of all its not that great of a record. many of other players could have done it but couldnt beacuse they sat out a day. Cal Ropken is one of the most ovvertaed plaeyrs in baseball history. he was a mediocre hitter with a good glove that got about 15 All-Star appereances that he didnt deserve. If it wasnt for the overrated and insignifacnt record he probably wont enter the HOF

A wonderful moment because of the fan reaction to Cal (how can you not like him?) and the wonderful TV coverage. For once, Chris Berman realized that he didn't have to say anything and let the endless roar of the crowd speak for itself. The only reason it isn't a top tier moment is that it wasn't unexpected like Bobby Thomson's homer was.

It's a shame it didn't get that much exposure compared to the overly hyped homerun chase in '98.

This is certainly a moment that resonates in my mind as a baseball fan of the early '90s until the present. I am giving this only a 4 because I thought it an injustice that it was given the #1 rating for baseball's most memorable moment at game 4 of this year's world series. Ripken was the all-time iron man, and I find consistency admirable, but I think that other moments such as Robinson's rookie year or Aaron's 715th home run be considered for the #1 spot on the list above this.
