Not quite as real now as we thought it was then. 70 home runs to 60 was too good to be true--and it turned out to be so.

At the time, it "saved" baseball. In the long run, 'roids are ruining the integrity of the game. Cheaters!

decent entertainment at the time. kinda funny now though, that i hardly ever hear either of the names, and sosa's still out there swingin' the bat....

I agree with allstardude1. I believe Sosa and McGwire used steroids and I think Ken Griffey Jr. is one of the greatest players ever not to mention my favorite in the game.

CHEATERS!

Griffey's the winner. Sosa and McGwire used steroids.

Great moment when McGwire broke that record, it took 37 years to break it and he hit 70.

The McGwire-Sosa home run chase made me a baseball fan again. The two most memorabel things about it were that Maris record was FINALLY broken. 2.McGwire's 70th. At the time, I couldn't imagine that anyone could reach 70 home runs!

I liked it although i didnt think Sammy Sosa was going to get there before Mark. but it definitly brought back many people to baseball.

Wasn't this some kind of fun? If you didn't enjoy this you just don't enjoy baseball.

Unbelievable for Sosa and McGwire to give the fans a homerun race that had everyone on the edge of their seats for weeks. This is an extrodinary moment that spanned an entire season. And then for the same scenario to happen again in 1999. Sosa and McGwire gave us a feel that couldn't be explained. They gave us a sense of history and awe. I don't think we'll ever forget that 1998 season, and the two most likable players that gave us something we may never see again. One of the greatest baseball moments? No. This is one of the greatest moments in sports history.

This brought me back to baseball.

This was not only exciting, but also inspiring because McGwire and Sosa both genuinely liked and respected each other.

How can you give this anything but a 5? Everyone in America was watching these games to see who would take the lead. Sure, some will argue that three years later Barry Bonds broke McGwire's record, but go back to 1998. No one cared about Bonds then. Everyone was watching McGwire and Sosa! It was so great. I remember going to the HOF with the race tied at 63, and seeing each of their bats and everything was home run race themed. It was so great. 1998 was the culmination of baseball for me, so far. Yanks win the Series, big time home run race, what can be better?
Weaselfan4life 08/08/2003
It only gets a 2 because im a huge fan of Baseball, but really, Sosa's stuck on a terrible team and nobody's heard from mcguire in a long time. Neither of the players will ever get what really counts- World Series Rings!
Jason1972 12/18/2002
It was good, but in retrospect, how much of that was attributed to performance-enhancing drugs?
ellajedlicka21 11/02/2002
1998 was quite an exciting year. Everybody had their preference of who they wanted to attain the single-season home run mark first; Sosa or McGwire. The media coverage was vast for this memorable race. Unfortunately, it didn't hold a significant amount of meaning because just 3 years later Barry Bonds would (with only a fraction of the attention) hit an astounding 73 home runs in his historic 2001 season.
