Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series 1

This makes the list? You're kidding me. Okay, a great moment in a slightly above average career, but not even Lasorda liked "Gibbie" if you belive all you hear and buy into Gibson's reputation as a hardass.

Not in the top 200 moments, but for the utter surprize of it and Gibson's lame fist pump as he rounded second--all on TV over and over again.

Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series 2

Don't even get me started about this "great event" that draws 90% of its traction from the fact that it was performed in freaking Los Angeles. This was a Game ONE homerun, ok? Sure, Gibson was aching and ailing, but this is not even on the same chart with most of the events on this list. If this had happened in Game One between the Marlins and the Royals, for example, it wouldn't have even made the newspapers.

Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series 3

"OK" only. The media loves it because it was LOS ANGELES VS. OAKLAND...more of that west coast snobbery. This is one very OVERRATED moment. A Game 1 home run cannot qualify as a memorable moment unless the manager hit it.

Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series 5

Although I was a Dodgers fan, the overwhelming media buzz at the time was all about the A's. L.A. was considered lucky to be in the series, let alone a realistic contender. Although keenly interested, I began the series in fearful anticipation. Kirk Gibson's home run changed everything. The Dodgers COULD do it; the A's COULD be beaten, and now, L.A. had momentum. Once Tommy LaSorda had momentum on his side, he WOULD not let it go. Without Kirk Gibson's home run, the series would have been totally different -- the mental pressure on L.A. would have been excruciating, and possibly fatal. Kirk's home run MADE the series.

If it had been a tight series I might bump him to a 5, but it wasn't much more than a really nice moment for him & the beginning of Tony LaRussa's Series woes. He did win the Earthquake series in 4, but his teams are 1-12 in the other three LaRussa managed Fall Classics.

Oh, do I still remember it well, even though I'm a long-suffering Cubs fan from the Midwest. The situation was one that you would expect to find in a fictional movie script. But there was nothing fictional about it.

I still say this was the most amazing moment I've ever seen, and I'm a Yankee fan! I've seen Fisks (1975 WS), Chambliss (1976 playoffs),Reggie (3 hrs 1977 WS)Joe Carter (1993 WS) and a boatload of other memorable moments, but nothing compares to King Kirk. The absulute perfect Hollywood script. Just something about Kirk Gibson, the guy just oozed charisma, one of those guys that had such an amazing presence which I think adds to the moment.

Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series 4

It was a great moment. I can remember most of a very interesting story. Gibson was not expected to play at all due to his injury. The Dodgers' scouting report on Eckersley included a very important footnote looking back on the 1988 season, in which he had been enormously successful. It said that in a big at-bat, if the count went to 3-2, Eck would always throw a back-up slider to a lefty. Lasorda knew it, so did Gibson. Once Gibson worked the count to 3-2, the outcome was sealed. Watching him limp around the bases, even though I wasn't rooting for either team, was tingly for baseball. Doing the stupid arm pump thing between first and second detracted from the dignity of the moment, but when he hobbled toward home, I said, that's what baseball is all about.

Absolutely amazing. The only thing I found more memorable that year was Mike Socia hitting a homer of Gooden to basically seal the deal against my Mets in the NLCS. The Mets had beaten the Dodgers 11 out of 12 regular season games in 88'.

Being a Giants fan, I wouldn't normally appreciate it. But since he did it against the A's, HAHA!

Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series 5

Kirk Gibson was the team's heart and soul the whole season but he was injured during the World Series. He expectedly doesn't play the entire game because he can barely walk, and then he gets called in to pinch hit in the last inning with the game tied. He steps up to the plate and knocks one out of the park, pumping his fist as he hobbled along the base path. I wasn't quite nine years old at the time but I remember feeling chills when I watched it. I remember thinking it's a good thing he hit that home run because he would have never beat out a single.

Greatest HR in baseball history!!!! OK so I'm a Dodger fan so I'm biased, but still, this guy was so injured he wasn't expected to play at all, and to hit that HR to win the game against the great closer Eckersley, was an amazing moment. And him limping around the bases. That was Game 1 and it was so important for the Dodgers to win that game, the A's were heavy favorites to win that series, and if they would have won Game 1, the series might have taken a different turn and the A's might have won it. That HR and victory lifted the Dodgers and they won it easily in 5 games. I'm still waiting for the Dodgers to win another World Series.

It will certainly go down as one of the best home runs ever. His trot around the bases was great. Oakland at least won the Series the next year.

Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run to win Game 1 of the 1988 World Series 5

The best home run --- EVER! You could not script this in Hollywood any better, even if The Natural came first. No memory stands out in my baseball mind any better, because it was the only event in the bigs that COULDN'T happen (other than, perhaps, the Cubs winning the WS). Nobody could believe it...the guy couldn't even walk and out of nowhere something amazing happens and immortalizes itself in one half-swing. Against an invincible closer in Eck. Damn! This might be the most improbable sports event ever! I may have been an impressionable 16 at the time, but I swear nothing I've seen since in sports has even come close to the drama surrounding the circumstances of that one at-bat.

Though I am not a Dodger fan, this is the most memorable baseball moment I have ever witnessed. It was more dramatic than Joe Carter or that Cabrera dude for sure. Nobody could have imagined what was about to happen when KG limped out of the dugout...

Not only was it momentus it was one of the most improbable moments(how many home runs had Eck given up that year - 0) in one of the biggest David v. Goliath matchups in WS history. As I recall Mickey Hatcher with all of his 3 homers that year batted clean up for the Dodgers that day. Sitting in the right field pavilion it was the greatest sports moment I have witnessed.

When many pro athletes are such Prima-Donnas, it is inspiring to recall the courage and stamina that Gibson displayed in that memorable at-bat.

In Game 1? Gibson's HR was certainly exciting (I remember watching it happen on TV). But, it won't be remembered forever. It will, however, be replayed forever because it happened in Los Angeles against another California team. Besides, unless it was an unassisted triple play, or something like that, Game 1 moments just don't stack up.
