 | Enkidu (37) 02/22/2004 | Means two different things: curry leaves, which are from a small tree native to India and Sri Lanka; and curry powder, which is a combination of many spices, in different proportions dependent on origin and personal taste (coriander, cumin, turmeric, chilis, fenugreek, mustard seed, kalonji, cinnamon, cardamon, and sometimes a few others). Marvelous and endlessly varied: you can make ten curries that taste completely different from each other by varying the ingredients and proportions.

 | VirileVagabond (32) 11/15/2003 | It is my understanding that curry is actually a combination of other spices (eg cinnamon, cardamom, coriander, cumin, and peppercorns) and that the name comes from the English term that covered the entire range of Indian food spicing. Nevertheless, curry has a very distinctive flavor which is prevalent in Indian and Southeast Asian (eg Thai) food. A small amount goes a long way for most people; however, for those who favor Asian dishes, strong curry is a necessity.
