Mustard is a no-fat alternative to mayonnaise, admittedly a weakness of mine, and is best when slathered on with a trowel. Treat yourself. 0 grams of fat! Plochman's makes a darned good mustard, particularly their sassy Kosciusko brand of stone-ground, deli-style mustard: the bracing slap of Weimar Germany, the tangy innocence of a Nathan's dog at Coney Island, the seedy siren song of a tailgate party at Soldier Field...a dollop of Kosciusco mustard instantly recalls all of these half-remembered or never-experienced sensory revelations. Mmmm. Mustard.

 | VirileVagabond (32) 11/15/2003 | Mustard is an extremely popular spice/condiment which provides a sharp flavor with little or no after-taste (ie it's hot but dissipates relatively quickly). Mustard was (and remains) a favorite of the Romans and other Europeans as mustard seeds were grown locally as opposed to most spices which had to be imported from Asia. The bottom line is mustard is great for most any beef and poultry dish. Moreover, dry, powdered mustard keeps practically forever and can be used for camping trips and diluted to taste.
