Sam seems the most human of all the citizens of this spooky little town. He is a loyal good guy, and I cant wait to see more of his back story.

Sam Merlotte seems like the ever-familiar "guy who doesn't get the girl, but becomes her best friend." It's appropriate that he shapeshifts into a dog, I suppose, since as a human he's absurdly loyal to Sookie.
