A Russo-Polish ballet dancer who was not only considered the best male dancer of his time (the 1908-1925 period) but possible the greatest ever. He was the first male ballet dancer to dance en pointe, and was famed for his athleticism, and phenomenal leaps. Not only was he a great dancer, but a great choreographer. Working in Diaghalev's company, he choreographed and danced in "L'apres midi d'un faun" "Jeux" and "Till Eulenspiegel" all of which pushed the edge, or grossly exceeded, what was considered proper in ballet at the time. Most famously, he choreographed and danced in "Le Sacre de Printemps" (The Rite of Spring) which is one of a small number of works of art to have caused a riot. In this he created futuristic, new direction of modern dance, with the radical angular movements that broke away from traditional ballet. While there are no clips to show anyone what he was like, I think the praise of his contemporaries, and the influence of his style speaks for itelf.I just love the disagree here. Thanks for keeping me atop the controversial list.
