Is this item for the traitor John Walker Lindh or for the traitor John Anthony Walker, the former communications specialist for the U.S. Navy who was a spy for the Soviet Union from 1968 to 1985? The latter helped the Soviets decipher over one million classified encrypted naval messages, and is considered one of the most effective and destructive Soviet spies in U.S. history. Walker justified his betrayal on grounds the classified Navy communications data he had sold the Soviets was completely compromised during the USS Pueblo incident (the U.S. Navy communications surveillance ship Pueblo was captured on the high seas by North Korea, and its crew held prisoner for nearly a year). However, information later obtained from Soviet archives and from Oleg Kalugin, a fomer KGB officer, indicates the Pueblo incident may have taken place because the Soviets wanted to study equipment that was described by documents supplied to them by Walker.

I rate Walker as a worse traitor than Lindh, since he was doing it solely for the money, over a long period of time, and he successfully recruited others to join him, in what later became known as the Walker spy ring. It included Jerry Whitworth, a Navy senior chief radioman who had access to highly-classified satellite communications data. See the Wikipedia article, John Anthony Walker, here.

As far as I know, Lindh hadn't yet killed anyone, thankfully, but only he knows that or whether he tried. He was interrogated for a lengthy time and confessed, and I'm assuming, perhaps without justification, that his confession would have included something like that. I haven't read his confession, and I'm not sure if it's available anywhere. See the Wikipedia article, John Walker Lindh, here.

I suppose you mean John Walker Lindh. This guy is a complete moron. Too bad he is now a public charge. Maybe he'll meet some anti-Mohammed type in the slammer and not be a public charge any more. Where is the Aryan Nation in the pen when you need them?

He should have got the death penalty for treason. This guy took up arms against the free world and he knew better. We should put him in a room with the suvivors from 9/11 that would probably knock some sense into him.

I am a US Army Veteran and I fought bravely and proudly in the Gulf and Somalia among other things which I cannot speak on. I have a few things to say first of all I respect everyones opinion that is one of the great freedoms we enjoy here in the great old USA;But I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone would want to advocate for a traitor ccuz in the end that is all JW Lindh is a god damn traitor and all he deserved or deserves is a hot plate of execution. As Americans we have the right to disagree with our government and it's policies and thats ok but to actually raise arms against your country in defense of those who by nature stand against the basic rights we as spoiled americans take for granted is irreprehensible the excuse of a rough childhood is a crock I grew up without my mom or dad and I come from the projects of Coney Island so life was not easy for me but it never occurred to me that I had a died in the wool reason to hate my country or be a yellow bellied TRAITOR!!!! If you feel sympathy for anyone how about the Soldiers who are out there putting there lives on the line everyday to protect that thing that we all take for granted FREEDOM!!! Also pity the American Soldiers who may have lost their lives at the hands of that Taliban Bitch. And in closing I'd like to personally address YOU JOHNNY LINDH I know that if there is any justice in this world somehow someway you will really pay for your crime and if I could be there when you get yours I would do so with pleasure because God forgives but the USA gets even you little overpriviledged whiny bitch may you die in pain and the gates of hell open up to swallow you with expediency!!!

Has to get a one in my opinion. First, I really dislike extremism in any form; be it Islamic, Christian, or Jewish. Secondly, fighting against your own country, especially for people like the Taliban, is apprehensible. I don't think he should be killed or even put in jail for the rest of his life, I mean he's just a kid. People make mistakes he will realize it and that's all that's important.

I personally don't care what the cicumstances were behind his converting to Islam. So, he had a bad childhood, so did a lot of other people and you don't see them going around supporting a group of people that are against your country. He knew what he was doing, that's all there is to it.

This guy is a disgrace to Islam, and I can say that as a Muslim. The Taliban was not a Muslim group and it was sad to see a lost young man get sucked up into that kind of evil. I wonder if he thought of his own mother as he watched women get stoned to death for talking to someone on the street or wearing a necklace? What a waste of a young mind.

Just thinking about him makes me sick. John Walker might have had a "bad childhood", but that still doesn't give him any excuse to betray his country! It's a bunch of BS to say "he was just standing up for what he believes in". So? It still doesn't give Walker the right to help the Taliban kill innocent Americans! It doesn't justify his actions. What did was wrong, he deserves the death penalty, and that's all there is to it.

The media should not called him an "American Taliban." Walker surrender his citizenship when he joined that terrorist group. This group taught him how to kill American soldiers or make a dirty bomb. That is not the end of it. This jerk has the nerve to whine about not getting a fair trial. What a ##$@!@# idiot!!!

John Walker belongs on the bottom of the list. This turkey trained in a terrorist camp, brag about meeting Bin Laden, and never warn the CIA agent about a possible uprising. I want puke when I hear his name.

I feel sorry for him. The man obviously had this uncontrollable rage and hatred boiling up inside him and what did anybody do to offer him some assistance? Nothing. Cetainly he does control his own actions, but he has been tortured from all sides of the spectrum and has obviously gone down the tubes. I want to believe that there is still hope for him, but...a lesson to be learned from this is that a hip hop star, parent, gun manufacturer, or whatever else people can come up with is not the thing at fault. When someone has that much terrible rage and terror and grief over everything bottled up inside them, someone understanding needs to help them get it out...and not on their former country. Take care, everyone!

John Walker was a kid who got lost. He grew up in Marin County, California, outside of San Francisco. It's a very liberal place; free spirits, free love; you get my drift here. He was exposed to many ideologies in a consecutive period. His parents encouraged him to explore different lifestyles but they did not give him any guidance as to what was right and wrong. Basically, there was plenty of moral relativism going on in that home. That is where Walker went wrong. He saw Islam as providing structure for him, something which was not offered by his neo-hippy parents at home. From what I've heard, his home life was not exactly very tranquil either, his parents separated in 1997. I honestly couldn't tell you why Walker took up arms against his country. It certainly was an extreme reaction to his bad family life and his conversion to Islam. But I can tell you that he is liable for his actions against the United States and therefore he should be tried accordingly. According to the constitution, his action merits the death penalty; in fact, treason is one of only two crimes that merit it. Walker confessed to his crimes and he has no case, even though he already has a legal team assembled. I understand the reason why his parents are coming to his aid now, but before they seemed rather nonchalant about the reason why they had not spoken to his son for over 8 months. Maybe there's more here than meets the eye. Who knows?

Okay folks. Feel sorry for this kid if you want, definitely feel sorry for his parents, but remember one thing. He is an adult, he is responsible for his own actions and he chose to side with the Taliban after they: bombed the WTC 9 years ago, claimed responsibilty for numerous terrorist acts, attempted a New year Eve bombing in 2000, bombed American embassies AND the U.S.S. Cole. Bottom line: He is a filthy traitor to this country. He was not forced to go over there, he sought them out. He bought into their propaganda. And HE FOUGHT AGAINST HIS OWN COUNTRY IN DOING SO! He deserves the same fate as any other traitor. There simply is no room for discussion.

I really have to hand it to him for sticking up for what he believes in. I saw a special on Walker on CNN and it showed how he went from being an average American kid to his converting to Islam. I wouldn't have done the same thing myself, but I guess I agree with magellan.

Three stars for shock value alone. Talk about a parent's worst nightmare... I mean lots of parents probably have to deal with their kids hanging out with the wrong crowd, with folks that probably aren't a good influence.... BUT THE TALIBAN?? Could it get any worse than this (for the parents)?? I wonder at what point young John started to have second thoughts... After 9/11? After the bombings of Afghanistan started? Or when he was lying in a blown up, flooded prison with dead bodies all around him. What a fascinating, disturbing story.

I am soooo sick of seeing this jerk's simpy face everywhere. He does not deserve to re-enter this country under any circumstances. When he does – and, of course, he will – he should be put in shackles in a very dark place for the rest of his natural life. It's "home town" idiots like this who make me think the anthrax letters were very possibly an internal problem here in the U.S. If it’s possible, he disgusts me even more than the Taliban.

Nobody twisted this pathetic SOB's arm to traipse off to Afghanistan and support a murderous band of rogues and corrupters of the Islamic faith. By all means he is entitled to due process of law (even though I grit my teeth when I think about it). I actually feel sorry for this jerk (a jerk being a fool)and how these clowns brainwashed him into thinking what he was doing was noble. I wonder what his parents must have been smoking to allow their son to carry his beliefs to the extreme that he did. Were there no parental controls at his house? Rather than taxpayers pay for his trial and pay for his prison housing for the rest of his life, simply return him to Afghanistan and let him live there under house arrest by the Northern Alliance. That way, he'd be off our case, since his actions speak rather loudly: HE'S A TRAITOR. 'Nuff said.

My first instinct is to give this guy one star, no questions asked. But I get the feeling that he's less evil than he is naive, lost, and psychologically unbalanced. Apparently he was desperate to latch on to an extreme ideology, and he only found one extreme enough for him in the Taliban's perversion of Islam. Deserves to be put away for life, in my opinion, but not killed.
