this song is so amazing. and the video is so great! a really clever partnership between song and video. this is a song which has made me cry many a time. and to think... i was only 2 when it was released! It sends shivers down my spine when i watch the video. This song is perfect for those times you feel like giving up... hold on, hold on, 'cause everybody hurts...aww soo pretty

A simple idea--folks stranded in a traffic jam, and we see what they're thinking in subtitles. An idea that turns into a tremendously moving video. Possibly R.E.M's best video, and that's saying a lot.

Achingly beautiful song. Subtly brilliant video. Too bad all videos aren't made with the same effort and thought.

Alot like Losing My Religion, but alot more depressing. But that is the point of the video and the song and it makes it all the better. It is very hard to pull your eyes away from this wonderful video and very true song. R.E.M. outdid theirselves as always...

Now this is a great music video and deserves to be in The Top 100 Most Watched Music Video. This video has style and great pride of what the song is all about. Who would ever imagine that at the end of the video that everone would just get out of their cars in a jammed section of the street and just start walking?

Good, simple video. But the mysterious figure on the bridge above them all could hold some meaning. Possibly a frustrated poet by the way he carelessly throws paper off the overpass.

Here's one of the rare instances where the video is actually a lot better than the song itself. There really should be more like that.

when very depressed one day I wanted to kill myself so ventured out to the end of the pier, I was wareing my personal sterio at the time and as I climbed up onto the wall to jump, this song started playing and made me realise I had to be strong as EVERYBODY HURTS, so I got down and went to see a doctor. This song saved my LIFE, I hope it does the same for other, fantastic lyrics welldone REM as you saved my life Karen 39 England

I think it's a sad, but touching song. I've suffered from severe depression for several years and this song lets me know that I'm not alone and that everybody hurts sometimes.

Its great when everyone leaves their cars and just starts walking. The subtitles for everyones thoughts are cool too.

This is probably the most meaningful and intelligent music video ever done, and one of the greatest R.E.M. songs! The music video actually has a connection to the song, as opposed to everything else you see in music videos this day. It is creative and unique. The director of this video could really visualize what the song was all about. Watch this music video! It's worth it!

I remember an interview of R.E.M. from around 1988 (may have appeared in the Philly fanzine, The Bob, if I'm not mistaken), where they were criticizing MTV and music videos as a whole. Michael Stipe said something like: "the problem is that there's never been a video that makes you like a song more -- at best its a wash, and usually they ruin it for you." I remember thinking that was true at the time (must have been before Billy Idol's "Cradle of Love" had that girl crawling all over that bed, remember?). But anyway, here's an example of a vidoe that's vastly better than the maudlin, super-crappy song it's based on. I would always fast-forward over this one, when listening to the "Automatic" album but it's a pretty absorbing and well-done video.
