Aren't all turkeys vegetarians? I never heard of a carnivorous turkey.
Ridgewalker 11/29/2008
A perfect accompaniment to ham that has been pressed, shaped, formed, flavored, dyed and preserved to somewhat look and taste like yams...
Josh4993 11/29/2008
If you're not vegetarian, why are you commenting again?? People searching veg options would like to discuss and compare the picture you see above. That's their prerogative, mmm k? Apparently, this makes everyone very uncomfortable. Telling I'd say...
Katrinabena 11/29/2008
There is no place for anything vegetarian at Thanksgiving, lol.
lorifreakinlor i 11/27/2008
I am thankful that my vegan friends can enjoy the thanksgiving holiday in a proper fashion. But PLEASE my vegan buddies don't eat a glob of ground up tofu (the tofurkey) shaped into something vaguely resembling a turkey! There are many great vegetarian dishes you can make stick to them.
fitman 11/27/2008
Although I am not a vegetarian, I once had a vegetarian Thanksgiving 'turkey' dinner with all the fixin's at the Vietnamese 'New World Vegetarian' restaurant (464 8th Street, Oakland, California) that was actually better than the real thing.
cyclee 11/27/2008
I love veggies and I love birds dead or alive, but vegetarian turkey is just wrong. If one really wants to be a vegetarian for religious or health reason, eat fruits and vegetables without the extra process. It's pointless to eat beans made into the shape of a cow/bird/pig.
FranksWildYear s 11/27/2008
I'm picturing tofu based foul with carrot beaks and wings made of cabbage leaves running around the farm yard in fear of crazed ravenous rabbits.
irishgit 11/27/2008
This is an offence against nature. Although, on the other hand, all turkeys are vegetarian.
Frankly, however, I'm always a little bemused at the way so many vegetarian dishes come disguised as meat. If vegans don't want to eat meat, more power to them, but why the need to make their meal appear to look like the thing they detest.
numbah16tdhaha 11/27/2008
Blasphemy! UPDATE: Its on the bottom of this list. You do the math... UPDATE: The vegetarian crusader cracks me up. "Why are you people even looking at this site if you aren't vegetarian." I for one might have used a question mark, but its rate it ALL and if meat eaters want to bag on fake turkey, we can. Now if you don't mind, I'm going to dip into a turkey and eggnog induced slumber...
E4Keith 11/24/2008
Why are you people even looking at this site if you aren't vegetarian. For us vegetarians this is a great option and quite delicious indeed. I am so tired of people saying other people are unamerican because of one thing or another, certainly what we eat does not make us unamerican. Please be respectful of other people's views. I'm not crazy about the thought that millions of Turkeys are slautered for Thanksgiving but I respect your right to choose. May you have a Happy Thanksgiving whatever you eat! After all isn't the holiday really about giving thanks. Let's remember that we are all in this together, shall we?
ibass4u 11/23/2008
It just amazes me to see how many meat eaters are offended by vegetarians who are actually doing something good for their bodies and the planet. Maybe it's time that the meat eaters on this planet take a good look at the after math of their eating habits, IE. polluted rivers, over use of water and food used to raise the animals, methane gas released at enormous levels, these all and many more effect global warming. So lay off the vegetarians they are good for the whole of the planet, I know the turkeys feel that way, why can't we? It should be unamerican to do what has become wrong for the planet not what is right.
~*~Annie~*~ 11/21/2008
That's not right.
Chalky 11/05/2008
hmmm....I really don't get the tofurkey craze...it's probably more expensive than a real turkey. "Kids, would you like white or dark tofurkey? To hell with this, let's break the tofurkey wish bone."
ANGEL FACE 11/05/2008
and the point would be??
MissPackRat4Je sus 11/30/2007
There's plenty of good food around to eat rather than to resort to this. I'm a meat-eater, and I like it that way!
LadyJesusFan77 7 11/30/2007
It's either the "real thing", or nothing at all.
Randyman 11/30/2007
Isn't this a sin? Or against the law?
lucy2 11/30/2007
so unamerican, especially if you aren't a vegetarian
CanadaSucks 11/13/2007
I cry foul. . .veg turkey? Isn't that like Sam Kinison's "Christians against Christ"? Ted Kennedy drinks non-alcoholic beer? Sam Brownback gets an idea?
twansalem 11/13/2007
If you're a vegetarian, that's fine. I don't understand it, but go ahead. But if you're a vegetarian, why are you trying to imitate meat? What's the point behind vegetarian turkey, tofu dogs, boca burgers, etc.? If you're a vegetarian but but you want something that tastes like meat, maybe you should be re-evaluating your diet.
GenghisTheHun 11/13/2007
Die, vegans, die! ( Drums roll!) By orders of the American Way of Thanksgiving this sentence is carried out! Ready, aim, fire!
meatsucks25236 11/13/2007
well, i usually make food for a family of about 4. i tried using this scince my husband is very obese, and i found it awful, my cats wouldnt even eat it. heck, my cats turds wouldnt even eat it!
edt4 11/26/2006
Sorry...this is where I draw the line. Bad enough I have to eat turkey hot-dogs...now I can't even have the turkey? Why? So I can live 2 or 3 more hours than I would have otherwise?
SharonParry 11/23/2006
I've had veggie chops and veggie hot dogs and hamburgers. I like them all. I've never had veggie turkey. I'm sure it would be fine though.
CastleBee 11/22/2006
What's the real point here? If I were a vegetarian or vegan I think I would prefer the real thing - not something diguised as it. The less you piddle around with something the better it is for you...which, if I'm correct, is the whole point of being a veggetarian in the first place.
Molfan 11/22/2006
i suppose this is the dish for the vegetarians out there and they will probably say this is yummy. i do not think I wil ever know that myself.
sfalconer 11/25/2005
If it's not turkey you can't call it turkey, in other words tofu no matter what you do to it, it's not Turkey.
odbtx 11/25/2005
As a vegetarian, I should have tried tofurkey by now, but have not. However, if earthbound says it smacks of making out with a blow-up doll, count me in! UPDATE: It should not be inferred from my previous comment that I am overly-obsesssed with blow-up dolls; in reality, I have never gotten past second base with one. But I can always hope.
earthbound 11/24/2005
Tofurkey is the culinary equivalent of making out with a blow-up doll. I don't eat birds, and I don't want my food to remind me of a bird - I like white nutroast with stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc. - don't knock it until you try it, meat eaters out there!
Djahuti 11/24/2005
I admire vegetarians, and maybe someday I will even be one-but TOFURKEY is pretty nasty,at least the ones I've tasted were.I think as meat substitutes go,Seitan is much better.
morganhammer 11/20/2005
I am a vegetarian, who makes a point of never criticizing what other people choose to eat. However, I think anyone who says God put animals on the earth so that people could eat them is an egotistical moron who obviously never read the Bible.
MPD 11/18/2005
I believe the important point is, if you're going to kill and eat another live creature, be aware that this is exactly what you are doing. Spend a moment and sincerely acknowledge and be THANKFUL for the life that is being given so that your fat belly can feel satisfied.
zuchinibut 08/06/2005
Maybe at some PETA loving, new age, hippie, liberal family's gathering, but there is no vegetarian turkey around my house...espcially at Thanksgiving.
kamylienne 11/25/2004
I was actually kind of looking forward to trying tofurky at the holiday potluck at work yesterday; unfortunately, it was not brought in. I'd rather give it a try before shooting it down; I like tofu, so maybe it won't be all that bad. Nevertheless, I AM carnivorous, and would still prefer real turkey for Thanksgiving.
jgls 11/24/2004
have a hippie thanksgiving.
AndrewScott 11/24/2004
With two siblings as vegetarians, I've had my share of non-traditional main dishes to go along with turkey over Thanksgiving. They prefer meatless lasagna over Tofurkey, as do I.
bibliophile 11/24/2004
I'm no fan of Tofurkey, as it's called. Though the vegetarian turkey deli slices made by St. Yves are delicious. And by the way, IJR, I do read Playboy for the articles. The interviews are often good, and I get a kick out of the Playboy Advisor column, because the questions asked remind me of a typical day at the library reference desk. The pics tend to be vanilla, but the articles ARE quite good. This is one reason Playboy is consistently on the list of magazine titles getting federal funding for braille transcription. It sure as hell isn't the pictures blind people are after.
