I know that all murders are done out of hate, but this is different. When someone is beaten up or killed because of their sexual orientation, relgion, race, etc. it isn't done because of something they've done to hurt or upset the person who killed them. These people who do this simply do it because they hate all people who are gay. So there is a difference.

All crimes are done out of hate. And just for your information: 60% of homosexuals have college degrees, compared to 18% of the general public. The average homosexual's salary is $55,430, compared to $32k of the general public and $12k of blacks. 50% of homosexuals have management/professional job positions, compared to 16% of the general population. Think that homosexuals are discriminated against? Think again! In fact, Ive been treated better since coming out of the closet.

Of course this happens and of course it should never be tolerated. But, I think if you look at it from a broad perspective, every time someone is intentionally beaten up or murdered it is no doubt done in hatred. This makes crimes against gays no more or less criminal than assaults against anyone else.

My sister got continually beaten up by guys when they found out that she was a lesbian - so people do beat the crap out of other people simply because of their sexuality. Another man has been murdered in London recently because he was gay. There was the nailbombing in central London at a gay pub where a few people died and quite a few were injured. So don't tell me that gays are playing a non-existant card here against gay bashing. Yes, any hate crime is obviously wrong - but like with hate crimes against different creed, sometimes it can be obvious when someone is gay. End of the day, it shouldn't be happening and certain people need to broaden their perspectives and learn that what goes on in someone elses personal life that doesn't hurt someone else has got absolutely NOTHING to do with them.

I dont think it should matter one bit who is the victim when considering a violent crime. That is just plain stupid. A straight person is just as effected when he is beat up or killed. This is just the gay folks once again trying to garner special treatment or at least special consideration. If the gay community is looking for equality in our society this is not the way to do it. And Mr. mikeholly, The president is not committing hate crime here! He simply believes that our country is better off by not promoting this lifestyle when considering the sanctity of marriage. Apparently the majority of this country thinks the same way. That is why he is our Leader....for another 4 years, and I could not be happier about it!

What puzzles me is what the legislation intended to accomplish in the first place. I truly do not understand what being punished more severely for crimes against somebody of a specific ethnicity, creed, gender or sexual preference does to help the problem of bigotry. I would think a bigot would be inclined to resent even more those who get special treatment from the law.

Mr. Bush is guilty of that with his anti-same sex marriage laws.
