 | kmacleod (0) 07/21/2008 | horrible experience.
two things happened this week. first, they would not deposit a check from the state of wisconsin for a tax refund. I'm instructed to get The State of Wisconsin to notorize something saying that it a real check?!? Seriously? How do I do that?
secondly, I was informed that I could NOT access my account since I was in a different state...AT A TCF BANK! I had state photo id, all my info, etc. I have no idea how these clowns are in business.

 | MoneyRoxx (0) 07/14/2008 | TCF Bank is the worst bank ever and their policies of ripping off customers seems to standard operating procedure. I am filing a complaint with the Attorney General's Office here in Arizona and would recommend that everyone else that has been ripped of by them to do the same. They do not even deserve a rating they are so messed up. Liars, fraud, you name it TCF is the absolutely worst of the worst. I too will join any class action suit that is presented.
Sick and Tired of being ripped off in AZ They don't even deserve a star but you forced the rating. DO NOT BANK WITH THIS RIPOFF COMPANY!!!

 | mkokotovich (0) 07/11/2008 | Terrible bank! Will never do business with again. Rude customer service. Online transfers from savings to checking fail almost as often as they succeed, without warning, leaving checks to bounce unless the balance is double checked the day after the transfer. I've never had a bank whose transfers fail at all, much less so often.

 | nikkim (0) 07/03/2008 | This bank does not have a clue how to do business. Mona the branch manager was contacted in person on Thursday July 3rd 2008 at 9:05am to start a instant wire transfer , this was so I could get a car before the 4th and not be stuck taking taxi cabs everywhere.
Mona then said she processed the instant wire transfer, and 4 hours later I call up asking the status, she then takes 30min to tell me a routing number is wrong.
Come to find out it was NOT wrong, and next thing you know she cant process this instant transfer until Monday the 7th of July 2008.
Now I am stuck without a car, the people who I am buying the car off of think's I am full of crap because they never heard of a Bank doing this, saying a routing number is wrong when it is not.
But what is someone to expect when you are taking out a good amount of that banks money to another bank, which is the competition. TCF shows here that if you try to take money away, they make it near impossible, with fake problems and errors.
So Stay away from this bank, unless you want to have over $8,000 in limbo where its non refundable, so if these people sell the car, Im not only out a car, but over $8,000 , because you can NOT reverse a wire.
Thanks Mona, you made this 4th of July one to remember. A ruined one, and now I have to live with not knowing what the hell is going on with my money that is in limbo until monday.
If I had Mona's last name it would be posted here because she deserves to be called and told how great of a bank manager she is. NOT.
I hope you stuff your face this holiday Mona, because come monday you will get a call from me ever 1 min after 9am EST until you get this instant transfer done.
For anyone who thinks this is just a specific problem to this location, please cut/paste the below link, which is to a google search to show how many other websites / complaints are out there for this lovely bank :

 | Drewheintz (0) 07/03/2008 | I can't believe this piece of crap bank is even still up. They took 150 dollars for me for overdraft fees on 5 different occasions that added up to less than 30 bucks. How does that make sense? TCF stands for Thieves Cheats and F_cks. They threw all my charges for the weekend and monday on tuesday and added all the nsf fees with it. So for spending about 100 dollars origonally, I got charge 280!!! 100 for what I spent and another 180 for their fees!!! I tried calling to see if they could help, but all I got was a lot of waiting and no help. They simply said, "Sorry sir I can't help you. All your hard earned money is now ours and there is nothing you can do about it." So screw TCF and all thier affiliates.

 | h8tcfb8nk (0) 06/12/2008 | Ordered new check card April 28th. Told 7-10 business days will come thru mail. Never tell customer card actually has an issuing period of 3 days and would actually take 14 days!!! The notice of card order never came and never got check card.
Called to ask where is my check card. Saw on account card issued but I never recieved. They immediately ordered another card when I never told them to. They cancelled the first card. So waited on 2nd card. Little notice came thru and check card came but guess what? CHECK CARD WAS CANCELLED BEFORE IT EVEN CAME TO MY MAIL BOX!!!
Called to complain. Ordered ANOTHER check card. Got little notice in mail saying card coming. NEVER RECIEVED CHECK CARD IN THE ALLOTTED 7-10 days or 14 days of actual issue!
Called to complain and pitch a fit. Asked where the hell is my check card. Yes I went around and around telling them no it's not my mail becuz my mail has been on alert since April 28th. So it isn't the mail system.
Get this... THEY WANT TO MAKE A FOURTH ORDER and cancel the card supposively still not here!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh hell nawwwww!!! If you are going to make a 4th order, that dayum card better be on a dayum plane to Chicago and in my hands in 2 days!!! Of course they can't do this...there's nothing they can do! B.S. I know WHAT I CAN DO!!!!!!!!!! Get in touch with the National banking Assn. and the Better Business Bureau and tell every one in TCF lobby not to bank there after I go and take all my money out!!!!!!!!!!! I will join any class action suit anyone has going on!!!

 | moof (0) 05/31/2008 | Their tellers needs better training.... so I was told I should upgrade my totally free checking account to a student account since the totally free checking account well... wasn't totally free. There's all these atm fees that just showed up one day during my 2 years of having the account. So the teller said he had my money transferred over to the new account and my card was also linked. That week I made a purchase of about 100 dollars, and after that my card was declined. Turned out none of the funds from my old account were transfered over except for the 25$ needed to open the student account. Of course they slap you with the 35$ overdraft fee, and I still needed the money in my old account transferred over. I went to their bank again today to have the money transferred over and get that fee erased... so after about 15 min of explaining to them what happened, they tell me to call customer service to get the entire fee erased. On the contrary, customer service would only do a 25$ one time courtesy reverse for me.... lame.

 | spmgcnfgdirrty (0) 05/17/2008 | Well to start off TCF opened my bank account when I was 17 and on a traffic ticket. All I wanted to do was cash my pay check out of my friends account and that is the only way they told me I could cash it if i opened up the account, even though it was illegal because of my age, and not to mention I did not have any picture id only a crumpled up traffic ticket. I have had plenty of over draf fees charged to my account, even though I had money in the account at the times. I once had direct deposit at one time and every once in a while the money would never show up in my account I would have to call any complain, get dicked around, and finally get my money weeks later then when I should have had it. So when I finally got fed up with TCF I closed my account. But according to them I never closed the account, and I owe them thousands of dollars for over draft fees on account I no longer have. I would also get like 2 debit cards in the mail a month from them, when I never requested them, they would also charge me for me. So 2 years later since I have origally had my account with TCF at the age of 17, I cannot get a bank account because of some hold TCF put on my credit report because I owe them money on a closed account. However when ever I call and try to figure out what caused all of these over draft fees on the non existing account I get put on hold for hours, and no one can answer my questions. TCF by far is the worse bank they will screw you over. I don't even want to give them a one they should get a zero but it makes you give them at least a one.

 | Matt24233 (0) 05/09/2008 | Worst bank ever? Don't give them so much credit!!!!! Twice in the last two months I have had unauthorized charges on my checking acct. and both times it was the worst hassle of my life. They make you fill out this claim form that takes 10 business days to go though and then, just then you might get your money. Oh yeah, that is after you appeal their first denial. My last was an unauthorized charge that they were actually quick to get me my money back, after I had to get them to give me the overdraft charge back. But wait, then two days later they tried to send that same charge through!!!
What the hell is up with these guys?? I am now in the process of switching to a smaller, friendlier bank.
Best of luck to all who have accounts there!!!

 | ranohd (0) 04/25/2008 | I wouldn't even give them 0 star, more like -100 stars, because this bank is the WORST bank ever. It is not about balancing your books, overdraft fees, but how bad their customer service is. From their headquarter to their tellers all of them are exceptionally rude, and unprofessional. My husband received some money transfer from HSBC bank, and they froze the account, then they closed the account and filed fraud, even though it was his money. We filed law suit against them, and its still hanging in the court. Today I got some Western Union transfer from my dad as a gift for my daughter's birthday. Since the closest Western Union turned out to be inside Jewel operated by TCF Bank, I cringed but went there anyway. It was only 1 block from my home. I give them filled out sheet which had in big bold letters "To Receive Money", and the teller in the front opens back door to consult with someone in the back. 4 people standing there giving me most unwelcoming glance, one of the managers named TJ asks me if it is to send or receive money? I asked him to repeat he repeats the question. I reply to him, you have eyes read what it says there. He hands me back the sheet and tells me to go somewhere else because I am being "smart ass " with him. Do you think anyone in the retail banking would treat customer like that? Only at TCF they do. I showed him the paper where in big bold letters it said "To Receive Money", he just replies "yeah, exactly, now go somewhere else". Never in my life I have been mistreated in such way. NEVER! I am a business owner where I know how important customer service is, from employees to management, but TCF clearly doesn't care. If anyone else will join me, we should publicize their poor customer service through media.

 | Luke1248 (0) 04/11/2008 | Ive worked for TCF for 6 months and just quit with no notice! Why?
When I first started working for TCF I was told how bad they were and I just figured it was people who were bad money managers. Ive been banking for 30 years and only had one problem which got corrected in one day. Then one day a check was taken out of my account twice, so I called 1800tcfbank and was told it would be corrected that day. Then I called again 4 days later and was told the same thing, then I called 3 days later and was told because I was a employee I would have to wait 20 days. So, I called the fraud dept and was told this is not fraud so I asked for the number to the president and was given the number to the mental health dept. I am also a large stockholder and will be unloading my stock in the near future. Good Hunting

SO again no issues with TCF .. i just think you need to be prepared for whatever withdraws/transfers your planning on doing!

 | anonymousrater7 (0) 04/08/2008 | Ok this bank would get a 4 star rating. Except they like taking your money. Every other bank is glad to keep you happy by deleting fees that probably are not your fault. This bank had the wrong address for my cd account. I had asked them to send me a notice when it was ready to close. I never got that noticed. I got a letter saying a low 2% 6 month cd had been opened in my account with the money that was in my first cd. I went to the bank and told them i never got a letter saying i had to take the money out or it would renew. They said that there not obligated to send a letter but they will if you ask and it was not there fault they had the wrong address and i could have checked it earlier. The fee was suppose to be $50 it ended up being around $250 because i lost the interest from the first cd. They said it was in a no interest cd even tho it was 5% cd. Why would I put money in a no interest cd. I am currently in a lawsuit with the bank I said i would drop it i just want my money back and them to apologizes they won't. The bank features would have earned this bank a 5 star rating. But they blame you if they do anything wrong and even when threatened with lawsuits think they didn't do anything wrong and its not there job to catch there mistakes its mine? They also were rude to me when I came in with work close on. I buy and rebuild houses and its a messy job. They looked at me like I was less value then there normal customers. Well I've wasted enough time telling you how bad this bank is. I would not recommend it at all. If you don't like somebody at work this would be a good way to get them tell them tcf is good.

 | Meehlticket (0) 04/08/2008 | TCF doesn't deserve even one star. I have had an account with TCF TWICE in five years...because I didn't actually close the account the first time I was disgruntled with TCF, it was just too easy to put money back in - smart business sucker ploy...
I figure TCF has cost me in EXCESS of $600 in five years.... pretty expensive banking. Now I am with a credit union and far happier and richer! I think TCF and employees (that condone TCF's practices) are CROOKS! My letter is going out to the National Comptroller of National Banks and BBB TODAY!

 | SUPERTAFT (0) 04/03/2008 | This is the biggest scam bank ever, I work with 2 ex employees who said the common acronym for tcf acutally means "the customers fucked". They are the biggest frauds I have ever seen. Charging outrageous fees and more fees for those fees. It is always the customers fault or mistake and when you question them they say its impossible to know for sure what happened. I hate, hate, hate this bank and I am reporting them to the better business bureau as well as suggesting a story of these assholes to every loacal media outlet in the twin cities.

 | ehannon (0) 03/27/2008 | Pretty much the worst bank I have ever used. I never had any major screw ups with cash transfers (mostly because I would not trust them with such transactions), but the employees are seemingly poorly trained and incompetent. If you ask 3 employees the same question, I am willing to bet you get 3 different answers. They just screw stuff up a lot and are not willing to admit the mistakes and fix the screw-ups without a hassle or a fight. You will mainly get an "oh, sorry, he/she should not have told you that, but even though our error cost you $200, I can only credit your account $50." If you are like me, you will reply with a "No thank you. Please let me speak with a manager and give me back all my money from my accounts."
Not that you shouldn't be checking your bank transactions meticulously to begin with... but if you stick with TCF, be extra certain you double check EVERYTHING. And ALWAYS deal only with a manager... at least you get a bit more accountability that way. But all in all, there are far better options.

 | eswak8 (0) 03/23/2008 | This bank should be sued!! My boyfriend had an account with them over 2 years ago. The bank screwed up when transferring money from one account to another, so they kept stating that he owed them $1500 or something like that...then after calling and being on hold, being told he would be called back..he asked to close his account, and he also asked if everything was fine and they said yes, he owed no money and blah,blah,blah...Now, 2 years later, my boyfriend went and opened a joint account. He had all of my info and I was not present, nor did he have any of my id's, let alone a notary to confirm I signed any of the paperwork, yet they still opened a joint account under his name and mine. So I figured, fine, we need a checking account...no harm, no foul..
Then after paying for the checks and putting all of our information in for direct deposit for our income tax returns...We get a letter stating that they are closing our account? So I call them up to find out why, and they stated because he still owed them $1500 from a previous account. Mind you this was an account from over 2 years ago that he went round and round in circles with them and finally they stated at that time it was all clear and done.
So they told me that I could open a new account under my name. I decided hell no, not after what they pulled with him. So they of course took all the money that we had put into the account to open it, and we lost money ordering the checks.
So now I make sure that my federal return doesn't go to the bank...I could not do this with my State check.. But I figure..well, the account is closed, so there should be no transactions accepted one way or the other. Not too mention, that HE owed them money, not ME..and the check was issued in my name.
Come to find out, that even though they closed the account, they still months after, accepted and took my state income tax check!!
So I called them up to bitch because.
1. They illegally opened a checking account under my name without my consent, or my presence.
2. The account had been closed so NO transactions should be governed.
3. You can NOT take money from ONE account to pay for an account that no longer is valid.
4. They told him in the past that things were cleared up, so why didn't they correctly document the previous problem from 2 years ago.
5. If he owed them money they should not be taking a state issued check clearly written in MY NAME!
6.Joint or not, if he owed them any money (which he didn't, but they claims he did) they should have either sent him to collections, or not even opened an account for him this second time.
So I eventually start getting heated with the customer service rep, because I asked to speak to the manager. Instead she kept putting me on hold and then coming back and stating that I need to come to a branch and fill out a fraud form. I told her, "why? I wouldn't be pressing charges against my boyfriend, I would be pressing charges against the bank for illegally opening an account under my name without following the proper security measures."
She told me rudely that I wasn't listening nor was I following the proper steps. I screamed at her that why should I listen and follow your steps when TCF didn't even follow the proper steps in opening a banking account. Nor did they seem to ever listen to anyone! Hell, when they closed our account and I told my boyfriend why. He spent 2 weeks on the phone with them trying to straighten it all out just like he did 2 years prior, but they stated that they had no knowledge of his account being settled and closed from 2 years prior. But if he could find the paperwork, they'd look into it more. Well, after moving within those 2 years, do you think he could find the paperwork to prove this?
I'm currently looking into suing TCF for their neglegence and technically...stealing my money!
They had no right to take my money, let alone open an account without my presence, yet, they feel they had all the right in the world to take my money because, "mam....it's a joint account, doesn't matter, any money that goes in goes towards what he owes."
No matter how much I screamed until I was blue in the face that the account was closed, I never authorized the opening of the account, he supposedly owed money from an old (closed) account, etc...
In no way did they try to help resolve this, and just kept brushing me off. They didn't even show any care to help, nor to ease the situation. So I finally hung up after telling her that unless they cut me back my check and mail it to me...I was contacting an attorney.
I am in the process of that now, and contacted the BBB.
They would have been better off giving me my $250 than now having to deal with what they are going to deal with...
So...DON"T USE TCF
Anyone else need to join in..contact me

 | Jiminator (0) 03/10/2008 | Hmmm.....seems to me that the ones who are crying loudest here are the ones who can't balance a check book. I've been with TCF for 12 years and HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM. Ever. I know the tellers at my local branch by name and they know me by name. Here's a clue for you all....don't write checks that you can't pay for. That's always helped me avoid any overdraft charges. Sheesh....

 | anonymous33 (0) 02/17/2008 | I do not have a TCF account. Thank goodness. I am very happy at Citibank. However, my boyfriend does and it is shocking to see the scams TCF has pulled. There unethical/unreasonable policies baffles me.
My boyfriend had fraudulent charges on his account. Someone got ahold of his bank card number and made online purchases, which caused his account to be overdrawn. Then, of course, he was hit with several overdraft fees. TCF fraud department investigated the charges and says because the 3 digit number on the back of the card was used to make these purchases, he had to be the one who had made them. So not only do they stick with overdraft fees, but they also call him a liar. Well, at this time he didn't have a lot of money in his account to begin with because he had been laid off from his job and hadn't been working. He couldn't pay all the charges as quickly as they wanted him to and gave him a date they needed to be paid by. He did pay the overdraft fees by that date, actually a couple days earlier. They claim he didn't and they sent him to check systems. He thought everything was fine and didn't know he had been sent until he went to another bank to open up an account and the would not do it because of the check system situation. So now he can't get an account with any other bank for 5 years. However, TCF informed him he could open up an account with them. Amazing! After not having an account for months. He decided he would go back to TCF because he needed a checking acoount and this would be the only option. They happily opened up a new account for him.
Already he is having problems again. We were out last night and he went to pay the check and his card was declined, causing me to pay. Well, he had deposited $2000 on Monday, so this shouldn't have happened. He calls today to find out why and they tell him it is because the check is not a local check, so it will take 5 days for it to clear. Friday would have been the fifth day. It should not take this long and how can they hold it by saying it's not local when they have branches all over. This is just a few of the negative things that have happened while he banked there.
Needless, to say I have been spreading the word for months not to bank at TCF.
I know intend on helping him fight this mess. Have an attorney friend willing to help.
Looking at all of these commments and talking to people who have had similiar experiences with this bank makes me wonder how they get anyone to bank there.

 | rob8543 (0) 01/22/2008 | I should have looked for reviews like this before opening an account with this bank. After reading the reviews, I see I am not alone, horrible customer service (it was my fault they "misplaced" the deposit), excessive fees and oddly enough telling me that "I need to pay ATT" after I had overpaid them and asked that a pending payment be reversed. I HOPE THIS BANK GETS WHAT THEY DESERVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They mailed me a credit statement saying that they couldn't bank with me because of my history. My question is: WHY NOT TELL ME THAT AT THE TIME THAT I OPENED MY ACCOUNT???!!! The teller stated they didn't do credit checks or chexsystems checks. So they opened a checking account for me. Even though they closed the account, they still have my money! What *uckn bull crap....if you have bad credit or in chexsystems, stay away from this place because they will lie to you to get your business!

 | msteka (0) 12/07/2007 | If you have been a victim of TCF unfair practices, please send your complaints to the National Comptroller of the Currency Administrator of National banks (OCC)-Customer Assistance Group,1301 McKinney Street-Suite 3450, Houston, TX 77010. Please send your complaints with any proof you may have of your claim. I found the OCC helpful. The investigation could take up to 60days but it is worth it. I recieved hundreds of $$ returned to my account. While each case is different- If you have been treated unfairly, this Federal agency can help. GOOD Luck
Tcf are crooks..I have consistently been charged over draft charges in instances where 4 or 5 debits come through at the same time..What Tcf does is..They will pay the largest debit (as a favor to the account holder-so they say) this is a LIE..They pay the larger amount so that they can cause the other transactions to over draw the account at $33.00 each..I have paid hundreds in overdrawn fees because of this terrible deception. I wonder how many others have fallen victim to this..I am looking at claiming a class action suit..or at least a complaint with the better business bureau. There has to be a law against this.it feels like robbery..lets face it, we should not over draw our accounts..in this tough economy it is getting more and more difficult to make ends meet..but we should not have to be subject to highway robbery by our financial institute. If you have been a victim of this, please respond there is strength in numbers..I will fight them for this.

 | iweejun (0) 11/29/2007 | I've never had good luck with TCF bank and when a mortgage broker talked me into using them for a second mortgage I immediately knew I made the wrong choice. I'm not a complainer. They just don't know how to process transactions, can't even apply interest and principal correctly to a mortgage loan. Every month since I opened this loan I have had to call my TCF contact and have her fix something. They also did not send me any notification re: ach debit; did not start taking it out when I requested. I have called their staff at the HQ bank and they are rude or just plain ignorant about transactions / process. Never again will I use them and I'm going to refi asap.

 | lokifella (0) 11/16/2007 | TCF Bank is the worst bank in the Chicago Area. They display one of the most predatory overdraft practices I've ever seen. You get a cash deposit and a check on the same day. Which one do you think they schose to credit first...that's right folks the check. When I asked why (since I adhered to the Terms and Conditions outlined in my account. I was told that cash deposits were posted AS A COURTESY TO ME but actually post 24 hours later!. Wow my own money posted as a favor to ME! That's insane itself. Let's also look at the fact that they need 24 hours to clear a CASH deposit. What are they checking the serial numbers on currency now?? Not only am I leaving TCF...I'm going to tell EVERYONE WHO WILL listen how truly AWFUL this Bank and it's business practices really are.

 | ken773 (0) 11/12/2007 | I've been with TCF for 12 years. I don't know of any other bank that is open 12 hours a day, every day (including most holidays). In Chicago, if I can find a Jewel, I can find a TCF bank. I've never been charged with seeing a teller. I've never been charged a bank fee. I have a checking account with them and a high-yielding CD. As far as bounced checks, I have a little trick: I "hide" $500 in my checking account at all times in case I screw up. For example, when I look at my balance online, it might say I have $1,000. But, my checkbook and my account in Quicken would say I have $500 available. This way, if my deposit is delayed, I should have enough money in there to cover any checks that need to clear. Does that make sense?

Well I deposited a check and not cash and the bam...they held the check and put a check that went through along with all the check card transactions (that normally take 4 days to post) in oneday and I got hit with $220 in overdraft fees!!! then i called and both people i spoke to were as rude as can be! i hate this bank!!!!

 | tc4quila (0) 10/24/2007 | I agree with everyone that TCF is the worst. I have had my account for about a month and they have sent me the wrong checks--twice. They sent me two debit cards and then when I cancelled one of them, of course, it was the one in which my pin was tied to so I had to go into the bank to correct it and then wait another 2-3 days because the idiots can't do it for you right away. I deposited a sizable amount of cash and a larger check and they held my money until the larger cleared which took 6 business days. In the mean time they returned four of my checks and charged me $132 in fees although I had the money sitting there. They refunded $99 but won't budge on the last fee. I have had to suffer the embarrassment of using my card several times only to be told it was "declined" yet I know that my money is just sitting there. They treated me like I wrote bad checks even though I had money in there. I opened my account because of convenience and it has cost me more time and money than it has been worth. I will close my account as soon as the checks I have written clear. DON'T BANK WITH THEM. BANK WITH KLEIN BANK. I never had issues with them.

 | Lanisto (0) 10/06/2007 | I have been with TCF bank since June of this year. Since I have been with TCF I have recieved 2 boxes of checks, one of which I did NOT order and got charged for 5 boxes of checks. When I called the customer service line, they said that they had to put a note on my account that these charges would not be reversed anymore but it's ok for me to still get charged for things I am not ordering nor recieving anyway. When I ask to talk to a supervisor, I am not allowed and when I ask for them to put a block on my account for check charges they say no. It's supposed to be a free checking account, however I must pay 33 cents for everytime I want to use my card because it pays for my "PROTECTION". Bottom line TCF charges your account for things you don't authorize, to use your card, and you have no control over who can and can't charge things to your account, how shitty is that. I am closing my account as soon as possible. If you are with TCF I suggest you do the same so that you don't get robbed also.

 | tingle411 (0) 10/04/2007 | I go to NIU. Over the Summer, a relative put money in my TCF account, their check bounced. So even though I had plenty of money in my account, TCF decided to freeze it entirley, and wipe out my debit card. After this was explained, I thought they were being helpful. Before the new school year they said I would have the account re-opened and a new debit card in seven business days. Three months later, and nothing. I again did what I did three months ago today, and they say about a week...again. As of now, they allow me to make deposits and withdrawls, but I cant use the debit card and they refuse to cash my checks. I dont owe them a cent, they have confirmed that, but because they are not getting richer off my situation, they could give a dingleberry if I ever get my account and card working right again or not. I have been having to by myself visa gift cards (from fricking TCF, only place in town that sells them, walmart doesnt even have them anymore) to buy things online.

 | SathingtonWilloughby (0) 09/13/2007 | Most horrific experience with a bank ever.
Previously I had an account with now Chase bank. I graduated high
school and the university I went to used TCF exclusivly, so I opened up
a checking account. Fall and spring semester passes and not any
problems, but then this summer is when things got ugly for me. My story
does not involve nearly as much money as the other posters but for a
broke college student, any amount of money is money to me.
Summer started, and one day my friend was in a situation where he
needed to sign over a check to me to get some money. His check bounced,
this I admit was 100% my fault for trusting him. My checking account
had very low funds, but I was always sure to keep the balance from
dipping below negative. I somehow managed to get the overdraft fees
reversed, but I still owed them money. I get a letter from them saying
I owed 38 dollars. No problem, I go and hand them 40 dollars and drive
home thinking everything was fine. I recieve a letter the week after
saying that I owed them 68 dollars now, apparently they never recieved
my money and were still charging me. I go into their very professional
branch at the local grocery store to talk to them. The guy working WAS
helpful believe it or not, openly admitting that the computer was
saying I owed them money but my receipt said my balance was positive.
He tells me he needed to call the offices and I would recieve a call
back later that day, and never got one. Another week goes by with no
calls but I recieve my statement, saying my account had 0.00 in it,
which I didn't mind seeing how I had maybe a dollar or two in my
checking account. A new semester starts and my dad goes to transfer me
money (and yes I know I have it good) and tells me it wasn't letting
him. Apparently they closed my account, and is now trying to bill me
for 68 dollars, I sit here typing this before I phone them to try and
somehow fix this.
Obviously I'm quite angry and have ranted to my friends about my
situation, and a few have shared similar stories. One friend I have
tells me that he overdrew his account by a couple dollars, and being
told the next week he owed them 60 dollars, the week after that he owed
them 300. A friend in my class told me about a friend he had that was
put on the checking system (that prevented him from opening checking
accounts in other banks) because they made a mistake with his account
that ended with them saying he owed them 400 dollars. They ADMITTED it
was a mistake but still put his name in the system, and he is now
filing a lawsuit against TCF so lets all wish him luck.
Seriously I have not heard ONE good experience with this bank from
anyone I know. They have no actual branch buildings that I know of,
only ones in grocery stores. I am normally not the type of person to
write on boards such as this one, but I just had to vent a little here
about the most horrifically run bank on the planet. Whats even worse is
with their rampant random charges, it almost feels like a scam having
TCF as the exlusive bank for many universities.
If you are considering banking with TCF at all for your own sanity do
NOT bank there. Heck, you would be better off trusting your money with
a drug addict then you are giving it to this bank. After this call if I
manage to get them to reverse the charges and leave free and clear it
will be a very happy day for me, and no matter what I soon will join
the ranks of happy ex-TCF bank customers.
I do feel bad for their CS people though, they must have thick skin
from trying to talk to customers of this sham of a bank all day.

 | ernieboss (0) 08/07/2007 | THIS IS THE WORST BANK IN THE WORLD DONT TRUST THEM WITH YOUR MONEY!!!!. I had a checking and savings account with this bank and i had more than enough money in the savings and $150 in checking. I wrote a check for $300 with the intention to move money from my savings to my checking to cover the charge. I spoke to a rep when I first opened my account about transfering money and I asked if I transfer money before the charge goes through will I have to worry about overdraft fees. The rep told me specificaly if you move money over before midnight you wont be charged an overdraft fee's and there is no problem with that. So I got off work at about 9:00pm and logged into the online banking to transfer over my funds to cover the check and other charges I had on my account. Come to find out that their internet banking was down and I couldnt complete the transfer. So I contacted the Customer service line, and come to find out that a live rep was unable to take my call because I called after business hours and thier automated system was down so I couldnt complete my transfer. I then the next day went ahead and logged in to Internet banking webiste and come to find out while thier system was down my check that i wrote cleared and 6 other charges hit the account which totaled 7 overdraft fees at $33 a pop. I called the customer service line freakin irate and spoke to a rep, I told the rep what happened and she could see in her system that i made the attempt to move the money over from savings to checking, but since I was unable to complete the transaction the overdraft fees were valid, I was so irrate about this i demanded that they remove the charges, they said that they wouldnt because I didnt have the money in the account when i made the charges and that they told me that i should have the money in the account before i complete any transaction. I pointed out to them that i had a lot of money in my savings account in thier bank earning them Interest and i made an attempt to move the money over to cover the charges. They said that it didnt matter and i asked is it worth losing my business and closing my accounts over the charges, guess what they said, yes! I was speachless, I could understand maybe not concidering removeing the charges if I only had the one account and didnt have the money, but these pricks have my money, more than enough to cover the charges in another account, but that didnt matter. So it has become a mission of mine to spread the word about how horrible this bank is.

 | bz41bh (0) 07/26/2007 | TCF bank is the worst, and that's hard to do. My complaint letter to them based on 2 months membership was 2 pages long. Every area of their business is flawed, and it is a VERY painful experience trusting them with your money. DON'T DO IT.

 | moogieqotl (0) 05/19/2007 | They are unethical, for starters. They purposely target people who live paycheck to paycheck and charge them fees when they don't have to. They will take 99.00 of fees off if you make yourself a big enough pain in the ass.I discovered they have a customer relationship rating tied to each person which dictates whether or not they decide if they'll "cover" insufficient funds for you. I found this out after making a scene at a branch when I asked a simple question that nobody could answer, directly. They wouldn't give me any useful information until I pryed it out of them. These people have no CS skills whatsoever. They do not paraphrase the customer's word's, or practice any empathy. They argue and tell you everything is your fault. They do not offer any advice, give any instructions or disclose any "unnecessary" information that would help a customer fully utilize their account and avoid fees. They would never do that because those fees sustain their entire backwards corporation.

 | illinoisportsfan (0) 03/01/2007 | Worst customer service of any bank I've ever experienced. They seem to find more and more ways to get your money from you. I have had countless horrible experiences with them and am switching to anohter bank. Just as an example: I deposited a cashier's check from my employee credit union into my TCF checkng account so that I could book flights on-line for my trip. TCF made $4000 of my $6000 deposit unavailable for *two weeks*! They sent me a letter about doing this, so I called their customer service line. The rep lied to me and said that this is a federal law for all deposits over $4000 and there was nothing they could do about it. She said their loss prevention department did this, but I could not talk to anyone in loss prevention because that is a non-customer contact department. She said someone from loss prevention would call me later that day. No one called me. I called back again and demanded that they call my Credit Union to verify the funds so that I could use my money. After calling three times, they finally verified the deposit and released my funds. If I had tried to use those funds before they released them, they said that I would incur an overdraft fee! This is just one horrible example out of many. They also charge you a "point of sale" fee every time you use your debit card. Basically, they suck and you should avoid giving them any of your money!

 | inanejason8 (0) 12/12/2006 | This bank does not even get a star....OK I get a letter in the mail saying that my account is frozen for $278.98. I go in to a branch and ask them why it was $278.98 when I already paid an overdue bill of about $108. They can't tell me anything and still made me pay the $278. When I call customer service I tell them that I had no account that was overdue $278. It turns out that the $278 that I had "owed" was actually my twin brother's account!!!!!! Same initials, same birthday, but yet they still made ME pay for it because the name on my twin's account was only his first initial. Customer service agreed that I shouldn't have paid for this and would forward it to loss prevention. 2 months later...NOTHING has happened. Nada, zip, zilch, zero. They got their money from the wrong person and they don't even care. They got their money and that's all that matters. I'm going to go to a real bank.

 | djooste (0) 12/04/2006 | I've been a customer of TCF for 10 years, and I have yet to have a bad customer service experience. To speak to other reviews... Like any bank, unless you deposit cash, your deposit isn't available for immediate withdrawl. If you know that your deposit is good, you can always write checks and use bank visa card without a problem. All banks want to make sure the check you are depositing is from a valid account with money in it. And I too have had them misprint my checks after ordering them. When you get new checks, there is always a form on the first book that asks you to verify that the information is correct. This is the responsability of the account holder. When my checks were wrong (incorrect routing number), the bank called in my new order to expidite the matter, and paid for express shipping. They also apologized for the mix-up. I had a MN account, and was ordering checks at a CO branch. CO branch had the routing number defaulted for their CO banks. They have awsome CD rates, very competitive savings account rates (2-3 times that of Wells Fargo), and best hours of any bank I've checked into... open til 8pm M-F, 6pm sat, 4pm sunday!

 | DianeElias (0) 09/18/2006 | They shouldn't even get a star. I have a business and personal account. They printed my business account number onto my personal checks--thus we started bouncing checks on the business account. For months I have been receiving letters from businesses who tried to cash the checks initially and who are now trying to charge me service fees. TCF reversed the bank fees but for every letter I receive from a disgruntled business, I have to make a trip to my local bank to get them to write a letter asking that the fee be reversed. Also, several businesses used the automated withdrawl method and withdrew $30 fees for these transactions. When I called TCF Bank's main number, they wouldn't resolve the issue and said I had to go to the local bank again. Very poor customer service. This is one of many stories. I am switching banks ASAP and I suggest you all do the same.
