TCF Bank 1

I also would not even give TCF bank a 1 star rating let alone anything higher. By far this has been the worst bank I have had to the displeasure to deal with.

I found out that even though they get my payroll deposit on Thursday and post it at 12;01 am on Friday morning, it is "technically" on HOLD until 12:01 am Saturday morning. This is just not right. I am going to go to my local credit union as they do not hold payroll deposits for any lenght of time. This is just another way that TCF uses to STEAL money from their customers through NSF fees. So far this month of November, because I was not advised of this HOld policy when I opened my account, they have charged me over 500 in NSF fees.

Do yourself a favor DO NOT OPEN an account with TCF Bank.

If I had an option for ZERO stars, I would have chosen that!!!

We applied for a mortgage which was approved and we were told our interest rate was 4.75%, two days before closing the mortgage broker told us he misquoted us and our interest rate was going to be upped to 5.75%. Knowing we couldn't back out because we bought a bank owned home, we were stuck! Watch out, they do this at the last minute to get more commissions and when they know you can't back out.

We closed in June 2009. Next, we asked for statements so we could pay our bills online and nothing ever came in the mail. They didn't give us account numbers and when we called, they said they can't look up our a/c numbers without our a/c. I said, that is fine, I will give you my SSN and you can look it up that way. They can't do that either!!!! So finally I had to go into the branch store and have our Mortgage guy look up the a/c number for us to pay our mortgage. We had to call and speak today to someone in the branch but when you call 1-800-TCF BANK, they are NOT allowed to give you the phone number of the branch office when I asked why, the customer service rep stated that because we could "interrupt them when they are with a customer". EXCUSE ME!! What kind of customer service is that! The only way you can get their number is if you know someone that works there and they are willing to give you their number. PLEASE!!!!! So basically any time you need to speak to someone you MUST go into the branch to speak to someone. RIDICULOUS. Also, in July 2009 when it was time to pay our mortgage, they said they changed our a/c to have statements sent to us so we could pay that way. As of Oct. we still have yet to receive ANY mail from TCF with the exception of them wanting us to purchase their Mortgage Insurance. YEAH RIGHT!!! So, as of Nov. 2009 we still don't have statements to send our payment in, we MUST go into the branch and they still haven't gotten it corrected.
BEWARE - NEVER USE!!!!

Worst customer service ever. I too got fucked over with NSF fees, and bieng with them for 10 years I never had any fees, except literally 2 that were taken off because it was some mistake. literally 10 years.... then this happens:

sunday i have $99.21 and i was planning on closing the account but i had a $50 check floating around still i was waiting for to go through before i closed it. I spend 7.25, and 2.57 at wendys and a gas station. monday i spend 8.11, and 11.53 at two stores. tuesday i spend 3.50 and 7.15. now by this time the check had not gone through yet, but EVEN if it did post, i would have about $10.

i had spent about $40 knowing i had $99 - the $50 check. thinking i was safe. stupidly, wednesday morning i accidently spend $35 on gas, so my PENDING balance is -$25. i actually had tons of cash on me as im a delivery driver in college and make lots of cash tips, and i even went inside the gas station to pay cash instead of paying with the card knowing i didnt have money. but i stupidly handed him the card and he swiped it. i knew i messed up but i figured i could just deposit money before it posts. i was wrong, since TCF decided to change their policy on 4/1/09 to screw people like me over in situations like this. this is where it gets interesting.

my $35, 3.50, and 7.15 were still pending that morning, and those 4 transactions from sunday and monday posted, AND the $50 check. of course, what they did was said i had 99.21, but subtracted the pending first (they told me they have to put aside the pending transactions to make sure i have funds for them when they post) so that left me with $52.84. of course they subtract the $50 first, so they can fuck me over with those first 4 transactions from sunday and monday so i got slapped with 4 NSF fees and was at a -$26.62 balance.

i asked them how can this be, those top 3 pending transactions have not posted yet, so why would those be subtracted first? they kept telling me the reason this all happened is because that $50 check posted suddenly, and that pending transactions are always set aside so you have funds for them. so i argued, it didnt matter when the $50 check posted, what matters is you are telling me the pending transactions are withheld so i have money for them, and then telling me i didnt have money for the ones that posted that day.

shouldnt all the posted transactions have had the money set aside in the past also then? i asked them "OK, WHEN DOES MY MONEY GET TAKEN OUT? WHILE PENDING? OR WHEN THEY OFFICIALLY POST?!" they told me it doesnt matter when, and they can do it in any order they want, and "its just how it works, all banks work like this" and i told them no my other bank DOESNT. then the manager told me to manage my money better.

whats even more ridiculous is they told me if i dont put money in my account i will get 3 more fees for those other 3 pending transactions the next day!!!! i said HOW CAN THIS BE, ON THIS STATEMENT IT SAYS I HAVE A POSITIVE BALANCE OF $52 BECAUSE YOU ALREADY SUBTRACTED THEM, THEN THE NEXT DAY YOU SAY THE OTHER 4 + $50 CHECK WERE SUBTRACTED FIRST, THEN YOU SLAP ME WITH THREE MORE NSF FEES? its a SCAM. they are hoping you wont catch on to their corrupt system.

i kept getting the manager caught in her own lies and she would always end up saying something like "you cant spend money that you dont have" and i kept saying, well those first 4 transactions were made when i had enough money, and they posted WHEN i had the money, you just LIE and claim the 3 pending ones were set aside "to ensure sufficient funds for when those post" but then claim those ALSO posted with NSF. if the funds are set aside while pending, those first 6 should have had the funds set aside, and i should have only gotten a NSF on the $35 gas charge, but i deposited money before that posted, so technically i shouldnt have gotten any at all.

whats even crazier is the $140 in NSF fees for those first 4 posted before the next 3 even posted, so that proves I HAD THE MONEY AVAILABLE for those 4.

they are liars and thieves. you can outsmart them and at least make them feel like lieing assholes infront of other customers, but 99% of customers arent gonna realize whats really going on behind the scenes to fuck them over.

i did get two refunded after calling tcf and explaining the situation, but they only refund one to hope you are happy with that, and give up. they wanted to charge me $240 in fees because i made ONE transaction that made my pending balance go negative to -$26.

*****************

My story is sort of confusing, so I wanted to add to this post and make a very simple situation that is possible, and shows how they are lieing:

If on Monday you have a balance of $2, and you spend $2, your pending balance is $0. technically you still have the money in your account until it POSTS. so now lets say TUESDAY you spend $2 again, and that first charge from the day before posts. this is what they do:

Previous balance ............... $2
Pending transactions ......... $2 (this is the one from tuesday)

Available Balance ............... $0
Posted Transactions ........... $2

Balance .............................. -$2

So you get a NSF for the monday transaction. this makes no sense because the $2 you ahve should go to the posted one, not the pending one first. they say the pending one is subtracted first to make sure you have the funds available when it posts, but you know its a lie because that would mean the $2 was already reserved for the first transaction) and it gets even crazier, this is what happens on wednesday when the 2nd transaction posts:

Previous Balance .............. $0 (this is because NOW they say its $2 minus the first monday trans)
None Pending

Posted Transactions ......... $2

Balance ............................ -$2

so you get hit with TWO NSF fees of $35.... so think about this, on tuesday, they told you the $2 was reserved or "set aside" as they tried to claim to me with my situation, to MAKE SURE i had the funds available, but then the next day they rearrange it again and say you didn't have those funds either!

so how can you have $2, make two $2 transactions, and not have funds for either?

the fact of the matter is YOU MUST HAVE HAD THE FUNDS FOR ATLEAST ONE OF THEM!! but the way they do it, makes it so you "don't" have funds for both. the manager will tell you you cant spend money you dont have.... like she told me, yet you would clearly have had money for atleast one of those. (likely tho, they would wave one of them just to try to appease you and make you go away, but will get away with atleast the one charge).

in the past, you could deposit money on tuesday, and you wouldnt have gotten a charge for the monday transaction because the $2 you DID have goes to the posted one, not the pending one, and then if you deposited money before the 2nd posted, you wouldnt have gotten an NSF for that either. in my situation, before 4/1/09, i wouldn't have gotten ANY NSF fees, but the new policy made it so i was GUARANTEED the first 4. just like in this analogy, you are guaranteed the first one.

now this gets even more interesting of course when they start arranging them by ammount. in my situation, i accidently charged $35 on a wednesday, my only charge that day, that put me negative $25, and they tried to slap me with a NSF for that, AND the previous 6 transactions from the three days before.

this shouldn't be legal because its a LIE! my analogy shows that YOU MUST HAVE HAD THE FUNDS available for atleast one of the two, or in my case i had the funds available for 6 of the 7 but they tried to fuck me over by rearranging shit over and over to maximize their NSF fees.

so people can argue that people who overdraft "need to manage their money better" like the manager at my tcf told me, and that i cant spend money i dont have, but its all a lie, they are screwing you over when YOU DO HAVE THE MONEY. in my case, i accidently used a card for an account i was planning on CLOSING the next day, and got screwed over.

TCF bank is hands down the worst financial institution that I have ever had. My husband picked it because they give you $50 bucks to sign up. Note to self: If a bank gives you money to sign up...Watch Out! How can they afford that you ask? They can afford to pay customers to join and to build and ENTIRE stadium because their NSF fees are a whopping $35. Not to mention that they don't allow you to link your checking and savings accounts. Recently, I incurred huge fees for a number of small charges because I was on the waiting list of a childcare facility for quite some time and they posted my deposit unexpectedly. No sympathy from TCF even though I had $ in my savings account. They don't post overdraft fees for like 48 hours so by the time I realized something was wrong; it is way too late. My husband and I both have direct deposit, so it has taken us awhile to part ways from this sub par establishment, which has only served to further my bitterness due to wildly swinging online account balances and middle of the night check cashing. The banking industry in general seems to have become such a self serving industry, penalizing its customers with a plethora of fees in a down economy that they themselves caused. "Thanks America for bailing us out with your hard earned tax dollars, now bend over!"

I forgot the most important part- TCF is involved in a CLASS-ACTION lawsuit, so if you think you have been ripped off log onto http://www.lieffcabraser.com/consumer/tcf.htm !!!!!!!

I used TCF at NIU because it was most convenient on campus. Only used it for rent deposits and kept my primary with Chase. I had an ok experience, no MAJOR issues. I closed the account once I graduated and left DeKalb.
Recently, I opened a new account with TCF as a secondary that I would only use for bills. I opened at Jewel in Naperville on 95th. The rep made me open a savings as well even after I told him I dont want a savings. He assured me that I could close it even the next day if I wanted to. A week later I go into Jewel in Bolingbrook to close the savings. The rep there was unprofessional and completely unhelpful. He told me he didnt know what I was talking about, the first rep must have done something 'special' and that I would have to go back to that location to get it taken care of. WTF? So I guess the TFC in Bolingbrook is not the same TCF as in Naperville?! I go back to the Naperville location and a different rep says I have to wait "a few more days" before closing it because I would be charged a fee.
The next month Im at the Eola Rd Jewel, the girls there helped and were very nice and seemed to know wtf they were talking about. All the while, I have not gotten a debit card yet and was told by the idiot at bolingbrook that TCF does not issue temp cards. Fine. I have problems with logging in online also eventhough the first Naperville rep told me I was 'all set up" from day one. I had to call cust. service and they were professional and efficient.

I use the account, start getting fees. Paper statement, pos, etc. Of all of these reps I have dealt with, no one could say, "hey, make sure you sign up for e-statements" or let me know to not use my debit card as debit???
Im closing my account this week! Too much to deal with at this cheapo bank. As my lovely rep at CHASE told me TCF=TOTAL CUSTOMER FAILURE!!!

I am so disappointed with this bank. How can they get away with what they do to customers? They are such thieves! They take people's money and claim they they're always right.

And then, every time something happens (if I lost my debit card, or wanted to change my address) they'd make me open a new account. I don't know what's up with them always trying to set people up with new accounts.

DO NOT trust these people with your money. You work hard for it, and if you bank here: THEY WILL do even the impossible to make you go negative and charge you many NSF fees.

I know, a lot of people say that if you keep a register then it wont happen. But it's not true, I kept one and I got charged $385 because "my direct deposit wasn't available yet" BUT when I didn't have it, I was talked into it because they said that it's available immediately. Somehow, they always win. And then you can't do anything because they will always say you're wrong. No matter how right you are, they wont admit it. So no, don't fall for the "The Customer First" crap. Plus they hire all these unprofessional people that don't know what they are talking about.

It's more than one person saying this. It's not a lie.

Everyone is saying how bad they are and how they try to overdraft charge you all the time. At my TCF location they have always been very good to me and whenever an overdraft comes up I go in and talk to them and they have always reversed it for me and put the money back into my account.

In their promotional material, TCF says "Tell your friends about the confidence you have in us." So, I will.

On Sept. 28 I opened an account at the TCF branch in my local Jewel. I wanted a separate account for my business travel expenses and the location was convenient. Opened the account with a $1500 expense check I'd received from my local employer (drawn on a local bank). On October 7 (9 days after opening account: 7 business days) I do an electronic funds transfer for $1200to pay my Amex bill -- and TCF bounces it and charges me $35!

I got nothing but blank stares at my local branch and nobody had a reasonable explanation other than "sometimes it takes longer for new account deposits to clear". Well, that's not my opinion of how you treat a new customer -- and it's probably a preview of more surprises to come -- so I closed my account.

As they suggested, I will gladly "tell me friends" that they should never do business with TCF Bank!

Absolutely the WORST customer service I have ever experienced. I called the customer service number to make sure that an online transfer from another bank was available to withdraw from my TCF account. They said yes, it is available immediately so I go to the bank branch to get a cashiers check issued. The branch manager wouldn't allow the funds to be released despite my objection that customer service rep said the exact opposite only a couple hours earlier. Absolutely no help or apology. I am closing my account immediately after I get my transfer out whenever they will actually decide to release the money...

DO NOT BANK HERE. They hold payroll checks forever and will find any excuse to slap you with some sort of a fee. I have never been with a worse bank in my life and am closing my account in the near future. Don't be fooled, any bank that has to bait you with $50 to get you in is WORTHLESS.

They people are crooks. I had an unexpected charge of $249.00 taken out of my account on Tuesday on a bill I had already paid, causing a negative balance. I have no problem with the $35.00 fee for that, as I was the original company's fault and not TCF. The problem I have is that they charged me $280.00 (8 fees) for earlier withdrawals, money taken out BEFORE the $249.00. I had thought that many of the complaints were isolated incidents, as I've been happy with TCF for the past year. After this, I see how they cheat and defraud their customers and I will be closing my account with them.

TCF bank is comprised of thieves. They do what they can to get you on the overdraft fees. They say they have the same practices as other banks when it comes to overdrafts but like another person said they have it all set up to doop you into constant overdrafts. They make you look like some idiot for not understanding their "Mommy dearest" stance on overdrafts.

THEY MAKE ME SICK. I have been with them for years but I am now determined to close my account with them and go to USbank or Wells fargo.

At least the other banks don't try to hide your balance. TCF acts like your actual balance is top secret CIA material. THEY ARE THE WORST. DO NOT BANK WITH THESE CREEPS

Not one star! This is the absolute worst bank I have ever banked with. I don't have the usual overdraft fee problems that most have, but the service is terrible. They hold checks too long. and they take advantage of the disadvantaged. This bank preys on the poor, low and fixed income population. If they have a direct deposit, this bank will let customers overdraw multiple times with their debit/atm card just enough to cover the direct deposit check that's due in and then start the cycle all over for the coming month. Collecting hundred in fees along the way.
As a former employee, we are trained to get those people in to open an account, and out as fast as possible. Some of these poorer customers have never had accounts anywhere, and they gloss over the account agreement not really explaining to them about what overdrafts are, how they devastate the account, and that they have an option to opt out of getting advances from the ATM and POS purchases when the funds are not available.

This bank is ridiculous and I am very surprised a class-action lawsuit has not been filed against them yet.

By far the WORST service my husband and I have ever had. Finding hair in your food at a restaurant is better service then this bank! Overdraft fees: Charged me no reason, never was negative in my account. Ordered Checks: I got married and it took 4 times (2 months) to physically go into the bank to ask what is the status on them to find out each time they were never ordered as well as my new debit card. Just the other day, I received in the mail a debit card with my Maiden name on it that I never ordered. They told me they weren't going to charge me for the checks since I waited so long, yeah, the charge was on my account. Totally messed up bank, they have no idea what they are doing. Closing my account this week. I just can't take it anymore!!!

I have had an account at TCF for many year and I have had no serious problem with them. Most of these people are complaining about overdraft fees. Well... if you don't overdraft your account, you won't get fees. Have money in the account if you plan on using it. I would definately recommend this bank. It is convinient and the staff is friendly.

The worst customer service and longest check hold-policies of any bank I've dealt with. I've dealt with at least six banks heavily over the past 25 years and TCF is the worst. I thought it might be nice to open an account there since they have many locations in the Chicagoland area, including at Jewel food stores. One time my wife had to wait for four hours with our then 2 year old son to get a large cashiers check. It was just crazy. When I complained about it a few weeks later, they remembered it, but did nothing- never recieved anything but a "we're sorry" over the phone. Later when my wife incurred an over-draft fee they were unwilling to budge at all- not even halving the $40 fee. They sent me a letter that they were closing my account due to inactivity and that I had 30 days from the date on the letter to make a transaction. On the 29th day they closed the account and confiscated the $12 I had in there. After about 30 minutes at the branch (on the 30th day) I did get my $12 back and the account re-instated. I am closing that account now.

If there was a rating less than I star, I would choose it. I opened an account, never received the checks that were promised although I was charged for their shipping. Went to check on the account at the same branch that I opened the account and was told I did not have an account. The representative of the bank could not find an account anywhere. I returned today to close the account.

This bank is completely inefficient and leaves me with the feeling that the bank only opens accounts in order to charge the account fees that should not be charged and would not be charged by a more upstanding banking institution.

TCF's past policy is to use 2pm CDT/CST as their cutoff time for deposits to post to the account same day (they are bsed in Minneapolis/St. Paul MN, which is in the CST/CDT time zone). If you make a withdrawal of $100 sending your account into negative territory, but deposit the money before the next 2pm, you are ok.
The only exception I know of for this policy has been that if you overdraw after 2pm on a Saturday, but deposit the money before 2pm on Monday, you are ok too, because they combined Sunday transactions with Monday transactions on Monday nights, meaning Sunday was processed as a Monday banking day.
As far as I know this is still their practice, and I have used these in the past to purchase items and then transfer the funds from 1 account to another, and avoid the OD fees based on the timing.
I realize of course TCF's policy to honor overdrafts as "courtesy" transactions is just that, a courtesy. They could deny them too, but choose to honor them, and in exchange, they except a $35 OD fee.
Here's where they get sneaky though...
Most of us do our account activity based on a time-line basis...but TCF does our account activity within a 24 hour period (48 hours for Sun/Mon) based on $ amount...they do deposits first, then LARGEST to smallest withdrawals. So here's the trick...
It's a Wednesday. You check your account at 8 AM CST/CDT, and it says "balance including pending transactions (not including that $200 check you wrote that hasn't cleared yet): $100.00. You figure you have $100.00 in your account, and go to buy a $50.00 item at the store, and in your head you think you have $50 left. You then go to get lunch and swipe your TCF check card for $8.50, then go buy gas for $20.00. This is all done before 2pm CST/CDT.
Now you get home after 2pm CST/CDT, and decide "maybe I'd better make a deposit to cover my purchases, so I don't incur an overdraft fee. You check your online balance, and it shows it to be $21.50, So you make a deposit for $88.50, to cover all your purchases that you made, leaving you with a balance of $100.00, just like at the start of the day.
As far as you knew, you had a positive balance in the morning, and your purchases didn't cause you to go overdraft (they were only $88.50, which is less than the $100 you started with at the start of the day).
But what TCF didn't show you on your online balance sheet was that $200 check...which had been received by TCF that morning, but didn't show as "pending" in your pending transactions after they received it...hence which in reality meant that your balance was $-100.00 to start with, NOT $100.00 as they said you had on their web page.
Here's where they get you....
The NEXT MORNING you check your account balance online and you expect to see a balance of $100.00.
Instead, you see the balance is -$205.00 because that $200.00 check cleared first, leaving you with a -$100.00 balance,
against which you had the 3 purchases you made ($50.00, $20.00,$8.50 , each of which on their system is drawn against an already negative account).
Wait! Where's the $88.50 you deposited???
It's there, but because you deposited it after 2pm, it doesn't count!
Therefore, it will get deposited on the NEXT daily cycle, and show up the next day. Assuming no further transactions, the next day you check your account, it will show -$116.50 (-$205.00 + $88.50).
This is a good example of something that is LEGAL (you signed the contract) but NOT ETHICAL.
The ONLY saving grace in the real world with TCF in this situation, is that they will not do more than 5 OD fees on you on a given day's transactions.
I welcome critique of this scenario. If I have miscalculated or missed anything, please comment and add in the correction. Thx!

I have never witnessed worse customer service at any corporation than at TCF. I was mugged on the 31st of March and had my card stolen. Despite having canceled my card 10 minutes after this occurred, the muggers managed to withdraw lots of cash, which incurred fees of all sorts to my account because I didn't have enough money in my account. I went to a branch the very next day and filed a fraud claim. They asked me stupid questions that had no relevance as usual and told me it could take up to a month for the investigation to finish.

2 months later I see my account is credited $75 for whatever reason (mind you, it was still -$600 or so) and I received a letter stating that I had to fill out this paperwork listing ALL fraud transactions MYSELF and then mail it in and that the reason it's been taking so long is because they need this crucial form. WHY THE FUCK WAS I NOT ASKED TO DO THIS IN PERSON WHEN I WAS IN THE BRANCH IF IT'S SO GODDAMN IMPORTANT?

A month after that, I am FINALLY credited back money in random amounts that made absolutely no sense to me. I added it up and it was about $70 short of what they really owed me, but at this point, I was so fed up with those idiots that I didn't feel $70 was worth having to deal with such stupidity.

A couple weeks later, I went into a branch to withdraw all my money, even though at this point, I had stopped using the account for obvious reasons. In fact, I even tried to close my account because I was so pissed that the investigation was taking so long, but they refused to do so because it was in the negative. When I got there, the teller gave me about $130 and I got very upset because I knew I had at least $200 with both my checking and savings account. She said I had absolutely NOTHING in my savings account which I was knew was a fucking lie because I never withdraw from there. She informed me that I transferred it in mid April. Why the fuck would I transfer $75 into my checking account from my savings when I was -$600 plus in my checking??? So that I could be only -$530? Obviously these people have no common sense. All of a sudden, I recalled the $75 I saw reimbursed in my account while the investigation was still on, and I realized the bank had credited me with my own fucking money!!!

How ridiculous is that? So on top of that $70 they already cheaped me out, there is another $75! She told me there was nothing she could do and that I had to call them on the phone to resolve the matter, so that's exactly what I did. I spent 40 minutes speaking to a representative on the phone explaining to this moron over and over why TCF owns me money, 10 of which was complete silence because I think he put me on hold unexpectedly in hopes I'd just hang up!!! What the fuck? How rude and unprofessional. Your fucking job is to fix these problems, you don't just run away when you dislike the customer. He told me that I was probably wasn't credited back what the bank felt wasn't due to the fraud. He also told me he couldn't do anything about it and that I'd have to go to a branch to fill out yet ANOTHER claim and probably wait another 3 long months!

The bank credited me back all fees incurred, and $450, which makes no sense because the cash withdrawn by the muggers ALONE was over $500. Where is the missing $50 from that? They felt the robbers really only used $450 of that? Makes no fucking sense. But I actually go to a fucking branch ready to explain the whole story for the 42390423048th time and of course she tells me they can't do anything. I have to call the investigative department, which makes a lot more sense. Pissed, I still called. They didn't pick up, so I left a message. They said they return all calls within 2 hours. This was weeks ago and I still haven't heard from those idiots.

I cant stomache the TCF Banking...It is horrible. I had to put a stop on a check..A 35.00 fee I did this on the 2nd of this month Next thing you know I am at the store and cant use my debit card I call the bank and come to find out this person was able to put the check in again. So I call them and trying to make them understand in "Barney style"My account shouldnt be negative because I paid the 35.00 stop fee. I was told that it has to go to your account before it can be stopped.Which means the money I have in there I cant use till they take it off. Ont top of that they wanted me to pay for the 25.00 fee because it was returned to the person. I said why should I have to eat the 25.00 fee I paid a 35.00 stop payment. Only when I got mad did they offer to put a stop payment on the 25.00 for no fee. He was at first wanting to pay 35.00 to stop 25.00 from being added every time the dumbie put in a check that was stopped. It amazes me that the customer service has no clue as to what there doing. Two women told me they didnt know when the stopped check would post and they both told me I had to eat the 25.00 and that as long as he keeps trying to put it through your charged 25.00. I am so getting out of this Bank. I thought I was the only one till reading all of these horror stories.

The only thing I like is the convenience of having the grocery branches open late and on weekends. I, too, have been slapped with the overdrafts, and it seems like as soon as I figure out how to avoid them, they change the rules. I think they are getting desperate, as this week, for the very first time ever, a hold was placed on my payroll check (unbeknownst to me, of course, because the rules for this are made up as they go, apparently), and things bounced. I am furious and will be changing banks asap.

TCF Bank 1

After cashing more than a thousand dollars of checks from reputable multi-million dollar internet-based companies which I have deposited checks from before for months, TCF Bank displayed my check as posted via online banking and reflected it in a balance inquiry done via the ATM. Seeing that the check was posted, the money was added to my balance register. Later that night, I went out to dinner and also made a handful of other small (less than $5-10) purchases.

Two days later my balance went to several hundred dollars negative out of nowhere. I called up TCF to find out what the hell went wrong to find out that they placed a "hold" on my check more than 48 hours after I had cashed it. When I asked them why the check would show up as posted in online banking they had no excuse - they attempted to cover up the fraudulent actions on their part with fake stories about how "Bank of America could not verify the check" or "The fraud department randomly puts checks on hold for no reason" or my favorite was a the CSR telling me "You haven't deposited a check from this company before" as an excuse and then stuttering like an idiot when I pointed her back a couple weeks on my statement (and a couple weeks before that, and a couple weeks before that, etc.).

Even on top of the fraud, you would assume banks would carry some sort of professionalism. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, the girl on the phone put me on hold for about 2-3 minutes. She then got back on the phone, and said "okay a supervisor is standing right behind me." Every single time I gave her an argument, there would be a short pause after which she'd tell me "the super said..." followed by an illogical excuse. I felt like I was talking to the little kid who gets caught in a lie, so starts making the lie bigger and bigger until you finally get tired of asking and lose all trust. This bank has lost all trust with me.

I printed out the bank statements showing my check "posted" and also showing my balance which was more than sufficient to cover not only the transactions they put overdraft charges on, but should have been enough of a balance to cover 10 times the amount...

I sat with the bank manager at my local branch for approximately a half hour going back and forth listening to him nervously mumble lie after lie. He even tried to pull out the policy book and explained that they can put a check on hold at any time without any reason for up to 5 days. I quickly turned the pages and showed him their other policy which states if money is put on hold they are to issue a $100 credit until they decide to let you access the rest of your money. To make a long story short even this argument wasn't sufficient, as he then claimed I wasn't eligible for a $100 credit because my account is less than 30 days old. Nowhere in their policy book does it say that accounts less than 30 days old are not entitled to the $100 credit and I read it cover to cover twice the night before... After flipping through the book and realizing he was caught in his lies, he nervously tried to come up with other lies and excuses.

Me and my wife finally got tired of it and threw the paperwork on the desk and threatened a lawsuit. With a bank statement that clearly shows my check as posted, an ATM deposit slip showing I made the deposit before 2pm in accordance with their funds availability policy, and an ATM balance inquiry showing the check added to my current balance, I have a hard time thinking I would have lost the case. Apparently they did too, because as soon as I threatened a lawsuit and pulled my phone out to call my lawyer and begin the process, they immeidatley refunded every penny in overdraft fees and apologized.

Your apology wasn't good enough for me to keep my mouth shut. I wish someone would start a class action lawsuit on TCF Bank. I don't even want some of the money - i simply want this bank to stop defrauding its customers and violating the law in order to profit. I've read hundreds of horror stories and what's even worse is there'd be thousands more if even half the people who had problems posted them online here (I've spoke to dozens of people in milwaukee who have had similar problems with TCF).

If some regular guy can get arrested and thrown in jail for 20 years for bank fraud, then why can't the president of this company who is knowingly stealing money from hard working people even be exposed for what he truly is - a bottom-feeding scum of the earth piece of shit?

WORST BANK I have ever had my money in. About a year ago someone was able to access my checking account on-line and almost $400 was taken out of it. TCF did nothing to recover my money despite all of the information that I was able to provide them. Pay Pal eventually ended up refunding it thankfully. About a year later, TCF actually closed my account and refused to refund my money since I hadn't used it in 6 months. I have been meaning to close the account but haven't gotten around to it. Reguardless, you keep your money in a bank to protect it, not to have the bank steal it! Despite contacting the branch manager the same day that I got the notice, and insisting that she get a supervisor on the phone, I did not get this resolved. TCF stold my money! Better off keeping it in your mattress!!

Just recently a friend of mine deposited his payroll check which bounced. Unfortunatly he had written checks against the funds that had not cleared so of course his checks bounced, and each one of them were charged $35. He immediatly went into one of the brances and was told that they, TCF,would of course redosit the check and that it would take 5 -7 business days for the check to go through. Finally after 9 business days he received a letter that his account is on hold and that he needed to call customer service. He called and was told that TCF would hold the check until the funds have been covered for the bounced payroll check. He was told over the phone that they do not redeposit the check, but once the account is in the black they would mail the check. The account was covered by his savings and has been in the black, but the check has still not been returned.

He is getting another paycheck from his place of employment, but it would have made it easier to give them the paper check back and get another check or form of payment. This is the first time this has ever happened and the employer paid for all of the NSF charges, but TCF should have redeposited the check or immediatly returned the check.

I have told him to close the account and go to a real bank where they are swindlers like TCF has been to him over the last couple of years. It was perfect for the convience, but for the headaches and overchages of thier juice money maybe it would just be better to bank with a loan shark their fees seem to be in better line with the economy.

As everyone else has said they do not deserve any star at all, but Im forced to put one here so that this review can be added to the general feeling of TCF.

I can't deal with TCF Bank anymore the are leagally riping me off. This must be the last straw I must close my account after some how having to pay $210.00 in over draft fees alone witch my bank account is only over drafted $5.87. How can this be?? I owe TCF Bank atotal of $215.87. How in the world can a simple $5.87 turn into $215.87 how I call them and they only tell me its my fault but it dosent add up how, how. This has been going on for the last two months they had somehow legal or not stolen over $800.00 from me nad thats with a total of just under $150.00 over draft adding to a total of $950.00 i'm so so so sick. I'm not working because the economy is bad and the stolen the only little amount of money I have. Cant pay the truck or eat because of some strange suffling of the numbers from TCF Bank. I say it again how can a $5.87 over draft turn into a $210.00 over draft fee???? Can we ban together and shut TCF down? How do we orginize a boycott? I'm ready to make a sign and stand infront of TCF Bank to detour people away and to with draw there money. Any plains feel free to email me at rmarcusr78@yahoo.com I can stand this bank anymore we have to make a stand.

I wrote this below last night. Let me tell you what happened today.

Still haven't heard anything back concerning my 3 phone calls from them which goes to prove no one checks their message machines. I have direct deposit. I checked my account half past midnight, money wasn't in there.

This evening, it was in there, and they had deducted my late fees from the money I had taken out because I needed to eat food. A necessity to stay alive. Approx 50.00. + a 35 dollar late fee, that should have been 85.00.

Now, my paycheck was 700 dollars, they left me with 330.00 dollars. Pissed me off, but I didn't care because I had money again finally. I took out 100.00 so I could have cash on me. I checked my account balance out of curiosity about 2 hours later.

I am now 461.00 OVERDRAFTED in my account!!!!!

How can I be over on my account, then two hours over, be double under?! I'll tell you, they're fucking assholes. Don't bank here.

I've had 2 problems with this bank in less than a year.

The first problem was between October - November of last year, just getting a debit card. They got my contact information wrong when I updated it, in turn, got the card sent to a different bank. That bank mailed it to my current one, and no one sen cared enough to tell me it was there, or to even notice it was there. I had to sign up for a second card and soon after, found out that card wasn't working. Calling tcf, I was told by the manager that she had found my first card I ordered and threw it away! She literally old me it was on the top of the trash in re trash can, then tried blaming it on being on vacation a week earlier.

I'm currently going through the second problem. I'm going into the second week with this one. I withdrew 300.00 from a us bank ATM because tcf's ATM was broken. My money was withdrawn, but it didn't give me my cash. I left a message on my banks answering machine. Next day, didn't get a call, so I called them and was told no one checks their messages. I went in and grabbed the investigative paperwork I was told to fill out, but was told that the transaction was still pending and to call back the next day to see if the ATM was counted and money replaced in my account. The next day it was still pending.

I've called twice since then, and have had to leave messages. I have yet to hear back from them.

They ruined my Christmas and they are now in my process of ruining a vacation I'm to take here in 2 weeks!

Go with this bank and you'll be sure to wait for anything to be done. You'll get crappy customer service, and you'll have nothing but a headache in the end. When this is settled, I'm closing my account and contacting Tom Martino.

TCF is by the far the worst bank I have ever dealt with. They take advantage of their customers by charging multiple fees - seems like a new one each week that was buried in the fine print.

You are not getting a good deal by them having good hours. Believe me, you will pay for that convenience. Go with your local or better national bank and leave TCF, you won't be sorry. I know I am going to recommend this to all of friends.

TCF Bank has gone to a new system in which has changed some policy's and they have not informed the customer of this.

If you are in the Opt out for NSF fees beware you are not protected. STARTING A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT against TCF Bank. To be put on this list be sure you have printed proof and email me at tcfbanklawsuit@yahoo.com

This is not a joke I am sick and tired of this bank and it is about time that we stand up together and stop this from happening.

Thank you for your time.

TCF is terrible. They will leave a set of transactions sit for a week considering them pending. Then my gas bill will deduct and I go $.10 under my balance they will at that point charge me a fee for the first transaction, backdating it to the day I made it as if the money was never there. Then do the same to the next transaction and so on. When all is said and done they return the payment to the gas company becasue I was .10 short to begin with. Then you end up spending $300 in fees for being .10 short of a light bill that came after other money was spent in the first place. Fine decline the light bill or pay it and charge a fee, dont bump it in front of 5 other transactions then give a fee for all of them. I want to find enough people to open a class action for fraud and deception on these guys. Scam artist... that is all.

I wrote to ABC news to shed a light on TCF overcharging people and taking advantage of the current state of the economy. I suggest the rest of you do the same. If enough people write into news networks about this bank's filthy transactions the story will finally get aired and TCF will loose LOTS money. Large corperations like this only care if and when their money is affected. To make a difference and stop this wrong doing we need to ban together now more than ever!

After a crap experience with Bank Of America, I did a lot of research prior to switching to TCFBank. I was thinking about going to a credit union, however, there arent very many where I live and I didn't want to switch to another big name bank, such as Chase.

At the time of my searching, TCFBank was, and still is, offering a seriously free $50.00 gift card so of course, being a broke college student, I decided to give it a try. In addition, TCF is headquartered in Minneapolis, which is where I'll be relocating to in the near future.

Well, despite these bad ratings and reviews here, I am having a wonderful experience with TCF so far. I walked into the huge bank and was helped by the manager. He was so polite and nice and walked me through everything. In addition, he ordered me a box of checks, for free!!! About a week later, the same manager called me personally to make sure that I had received my debit card and checks. Kudos.

The place is always busy when I'm there but their 5 drive thru lanes make it a breeze to get in and out within minutes. Their debit card also comes with a rewards program, totally free!! You get cash back online, at certain stores and many local businesses as well. I think thats knarly!

So far, I havent seen mysterious fees and charges.

Okay, so pros are: great customer service, rewards program, no minimum balance, no fees, easy to use online banking, pendings are posted and cleared quickly.

cons: not many locations and the debit card is ugly..but its all good!

andddd just in case youre wondering, I spent the $50 card on hair dye and an at home teeth whitening kit. whoot!!

I've been a customer of TCF Bank for a couple of years now and have had a lot of overdraft fee issues. I thought they must have been my fault for miscalculating and not knowing how transactions post, but yesterday I found out that TCF Bank has been ripping me off the whole time.

On Feb. 12 my account balance was $205.14. I made four purchases totaling $45.23 bringing my account balance to $159.91. The same night I checked my account balance online and noticed an ACH transaction pending for $200 after the purchases that I made earlier that day. So I recorded the ACH transaction in my register and brought down my balance to -$40.09. I subtracted a $35 NSF fee amount because that's what the bank charges for overdrafing the account. My final account balnace was -$75.09. Yesterday, Feb. 15, 2009 I went to a TCF Bank and deposited $160.00 to my acoount to make it current and have a balance of $84.91. However, when I got the deposit receipt I noticed that it stated a -$20.09 balance. I was confused about what was going on. As soon as I got home I checked my account online and noticed that I had been charged $140.00 of NSF fees for the transactions that I had made on Feb. 12,2009 before the actual transaction of $200 that had made my account negative.

I called TCF Bank and spoke to a man named Sebastian who told me that the reason why I had been charged the NSF fees for the other transacions even though I did have money in the account at the time was because TCF Bank posts the transactions from greatest to smallest, even though they weren't made in that order. He said the reason why the bank did this was because they want to pay off the more "SIGNIFICANT" amounts first like car payments, mortgage payments, etc., so it would be less inconvenient for the customer.

But to me, this method IS inconvinient and they are not being fair or ethical. They charge the customer various NSF fees by manipulating the order the transactions post. I know Bank of America got in trouble for the same thing and TCF bank should suffer the same consequences as BOA.

I had a huge problem with their Overdraft Loan "protection". I was going to close my account and had redirected my direct dep. to my Charter One account and I completely forgot to switch my Student Loan Direct Payment as well. Here is where it gets shitty. I look at my online balance and not only does it not show my auto student loan payment withdrawl, it just shows that I have 250 more dollars than I should. The people on the phone were no help and the bank manager near my house was no help. To them, I had a mystery deposit into my account. The manager said she would call me in a day or so and did not. I would end up calling the phone line again after everything was posted several days late and telling the man to pay the loan back...well, I asked to pay back 250 and he ends up putting in 25...I see this a day or two later, call back and ask for my balance. They give me the wrong balance, and I end up getting another overdraft fee because I overdrew my account paying off the last over draft loan advance!!!! I was steaming at this point. And mind you, I didn't have any withdrawls using my account in-between the overdraft loan and me overdrafting it again in a futile attempt to pay it back.

I go to the bank itself on Monday and no-one knows what to do and are quite confused by my problems...they tell me to come back the next day. I do, and the lady at the counter says that she "understood" what had happened but didn't know what I expected her to do. She could have just told me that she didn't know what the fuck she was doing and I'm out of luck, at least I could have accepted that. She literally told me "Ok, I guess I understand what happened, but what I don't know what you want me to do....do you want to file a complaint?"

I was then told, after 2 days of BS that the commercial bank has nothing to do with the phone banking or the overdraft loans...

What a crock.

I worked as a trainer at TCF and had to quit. I worked their for over half a decade and did an excellent job. Customers loved me and I loved my customers, and they still remember me. But to work for the company means you will be underpaid, under-trained, and generally treated like garbage. Some people have maintain their senses between this and some of the most irate customers and some that are truly insane. In training it was no better. Still treated like garbage, underpaid, and had my hands tied by a negligent department the was controlled by the branch and upper management with one goal in mind. Get employees behind the line as fast as you can, and keep them there. Training routinely was sacrificed. Quality traded in for "technicality" sessions. They wouldn't even let me change type-o's in the material and in terms of updates trainers were the last to know. We were outdated, and pretty much ignored despite our best efforts to improve. I did the best I could and I kicked ass, but I got fed up when the very training site flooded, reeking of sewage and infested with flies was never cleaned for two months. Meaning I went to work and had migraines, congestion, and nausea on a daily basis. I worked there in all 9 years and they treated me like garbage even though I always upheld excellent customer service and the supposed company goal. Good people who stay are like battered wives stuck in an abusive relationship. For all the people who have had a bad experience believe me I cringe still to hear it. To think of all the customers that I helped and enjoyed serving now are subject to such unprofessionalism. My advice. If you find a some good employees stick with them. There are a lot of good people there, and do realize that they are getting paid shit to treat you nice AND also deal with some of the most insane customers, scammers, racists, and abusive pricks that do exist in this world. Remember, TCF opens accounts for ANYONE. The only incentive to give a customer the time of day after opening the account in most cases is a sense of pride and professionalism. Other than that, NSF's are avoidable. If not, most cases it's not the banks fault. Had an account for a long time and never paid one. Even on their shitty payroll. And they don't reverse for employees either. That's all. Be nice to each other out there. These are hard times and very few have it easy. Peace

TCF Bank has to be the worst bank that i have ever had to deal with. when we first moved out to MN we had to wait 10 days for our checks to clear then after our first 30 days we would only have to wait 5 days so they told us.. we had well of 3000.00 in our checking. wrote out a check for rent and the dang bank bounced our check stating we had to wait 10 business days for the check to clear. even though we had already been with them for 3 months..we decided not to every put checks in again it was too much of a hassel.. so every since i have been putting in cash on Friday i didn't my typical deposit by 9:30 am When I looked on sunday i discovered that they didn't really deposit my money when i went in to the office on sun. the First guy i talked to tried to tell me i had gone thur that money and the balance they had was correct.. then after chewing him a new butt, I was informed that the little girl who did my deposit was new and that something was screwed up with her badge number. and that I would have to wait till monday for it to alll be cleared up.. you better believe i will be in first thing monday morning closing my account and finding a new bank
this is the WORST BANK EVER the sad thing is they don't care!!!

Well I wrote out checks and mailed them not knowing my check was bad. I sent out 6 bills and alll the checks bounced. They charged me a $35 fee on each one. I call them to say why it happened. They didnt care! They (TCF) said that they would be out of business if they didnt charge these fees. I told them they would get their money immediately. All they had to do was trnasfer money from savings to checking. They did not care. I am going to close my account! Dont ever use TCF! They dont care about people!

Those government agencies, non-profits, or consumer support groups seeking to gather information for a case study relating to compliance to law and regulations in debt servicing should observe this operation. Basically, in my experience, everything they do seems to violate one law or another. Just amazing. Amazing.

My own credit rating is 820 and I manitain over 60 thousand in deposits (cash). TCF says I authorized a tranfer of over 30k into someone else's account? I did this I guess because I wanted to be nice to someone?? No it's this simple. I know money and I know how electronic systems and authorized transactions should work. TCF has not a clue and simply allowed my money to be stolen. DO NOT TRUST TCF TO HOLD YOUR MONEY OR IDENTITY. It will take you a lifetime to even attempt to get anything. The Fed's are now investigating TCF and it's officers...Things are about to get very interesting. Do not feel bad in the least.

Terrible, just terrible. TCF does not provide adequate systems to train and supervise their management team, resulting in an arrogance that incourages a "because we say so" attitude, regardless of regulatory requirements.

Don't use them for a second mortgage loan. The post by iweejun sounds like my exact situation:

"I've never had good luck with TCF bank and when a mortgage broker talked me into using them for a second mortgage I immediately knew I made the wrong choice. I'm not a complainer. They just don't know how to process transactions, can't even apply interest and principal correctly to a mortgage loan. Every month since I opened this loan I have had to call my TCF contact and have her fix something."

I honestly spend an hour on the phone each month because I send extra principal trying to pay off my loan early (my loan officer even has me write a separate check with a note saying to apply the entire amount to principal) and every month they try to apply some of my extra to interest.

I hate that I have to give this bank even one star. They are HORRIBLE. I am a great money manager and none of my problems with them have anything to do with how I take care of my money. I can't even think of all the things they have done to screw me over, but here are a few: 1. My husband and I started this account right after we got married. I put it in both my maiden and married names to be on the safe side since I knew it was going to take a couple cycles for my employer to get my married name on my paychecks. So I deposit the first check with my maiden name on it. Everything seems to be fine...it posts to my account perfectly. 2 weeks later I get the last check with my maiden name on it. Deposit it like last time. But then a few days later I get a letter in the mail saying they were putting a hold on my 2nd check for TWO WEEKS because it didn't match my married name. AHHHH! Thank goodness I wasn't living paycheck-to-paycheck, but it's the principle of the whole thing! 2. I make a deposit through the teller for whatever amount and 51 cents. On my deposit slip I connected the top of my 5 to the 1, but if you do the math, it all still adds up to whatever.51. They of course don't do the math when they deposit it and put it in for 57 cents. I didn't even make a connection at all. The next day I check my account online and sure enough they made the correction. But the idiots corrected it for $600 and not .06!!! So I'm out $600 for a week while they supposedly try to fix this problem. I don't know what takes a week, but I was LIVID. 3. A month ago I made a deposit through the ATM. The ATM machine sucks in my envelope with my deposit, says there is an error, and it cannot process my request. IT DOESN'T GIVE ME THE RECEIPT EITHER! So I go to the teller, explain my situation, and he insists that I must not have put the envelope in and that's the only time it happens. He pretty much accused me of thievery! I told him to open up the ATM and solve the problem because I wanted it deposited before 2 PM and that's why I came at that time. He told me that he could not do that and it would be fixed in the morning and it will take an extra day to process. I told him that I did not want an extra day, that if I did I would have come after 2 PM. He said there was nothing he could do. So finally I left, just annoyed. I KNOW they can open the ATM in the store because they have opened it for me in the past when it doesn't issue me a receipt. The next day I check my account and there is still no record of the deposit being fixed...it only showed that I tried to make a deposit and that it was reversed. So I go into the place, they guy said he found my check. I demanded an apology for calling me a liar the day before and he said he doesn't owe me anything. He said he took care of it and showed me on the computer where it was "fixed"...but it was the same thing I saw online...it was followed by the reversal! So he said he would call and have it fixed by phone. I asked when this would happen, and he said by 6 PM. So I asked if I would have to wait ANOTHER day for this deposit to go through. He said yes. I was PISSED! It was finally fixed THE NEXT DAY; the day my check was processed was the day it was supposed to clear, and I had to wait the entire weekend because of the way the days fell for this check to clear. I could tell so many more stories. This place sucks. I now bank with WaMu and they have been nothing but perfect!

I'm a previous employee of TCF and I have to agree with the statements everyone makes. I will be honest I thought it was a great company to work for but let me tell you it's is going down the hole. With budget cuts and increasing fees TCF has got to watch out because they will be going under. Their employees are incredibly under paid and treated like shit so they treat customer like shit also. The only way employees can make money is selling accounts people do not even need because they get commission on it. Which isn't much either. Executives make decision to change operations and sales and make an excuse saying that it is for the better when all they care about is scaming people. TCF can go to hell and so can all the management!

I have just about had it with this bank. Three years ago, I closed an account with them, moving on to Chase, and also moved. A year later, I get a notice from Chase saying they would be closing my account in 14 days due to credit problems. I was confused, and had to hurdle around trying to figure out what had happened, and was told that I supposedly owed TCF over $500. I went in to the nearest TCF and explained the situation, showing my paperwork of the account closure a year prior. Apparently, an employee had overdrawn my account and fees had piled up, as there was no balance. The surly TCF manager said that I was responsible due to the fact that they had sent notices. I never got one, and I had a forwarding address listed. He said that I would have to go to the branch where I opened the account in order to take care of this. I went ahead, and the manager apologized for her colleagues conduct, gave me paperwork indicating the matter was closed, and I bid her good day. I then fax a copy of the paperwork over to Chase HQ and thought the matter was over. Boy, was I wrong. Apparently, that manager never cleared my name with CHEX, and so my Chase account was closed. Apparently once you're blackballed by CHEX, it takes 4 years before most banks will take you on as a customer. I went in to TCF, extremely angry as I ran a web-based business through my Chase account. I was given an opportunity to open a TCF account, and was given $100 in a initial credit. I was still angry, but I had no choice but to open the account in order to run my business.

Ever since, I had few problems, until today. I check my balance daily using the phone service (as they can never seem to figure out why the web-based account services won't work under my social security number). Last night, I checked my balance, and it was substantially positive. I check again today, and it is still positive, but lower than expected. There was a $102 overdraft fee retroactively placed two days ago that was never there. Luckily, I have counter and ATM receipts from the last two days, so hopefully I can get this resolved tomorrow

TCF bank suck!!! I rather giver my money to a drug dealer than to those suited crooks. I had 1660.00 in my account on August 25 with 2 checks 1250 and 275.00 nothing else written nor did I use my card. Those anal took 283.00 in fees statin I made the deposit( all in in cash at 2.01pm) so it all went in on the 26th. I call customer service and she stated that the checks hit the bank at 12.01 on the 26th and at that time my money of 1660.0 had not been deposit in THEIR system. No fees removed, no empathy .. We work too damm hard to be giving away money I am closing my account right now.
