The book Elrond delivers one of my favourite lines, which did not make the movie. Warning Gimli of too much hubris as the fellowship leaves Rivendell, Elrond says "Let him not vow to walk in the dark, who has not seen the nightfall."

Tolkien uses Elrond as one of his vehicles to explore a common theme of the canon. That of the inevitability of change, that good passes away, even if superceded by another good. Tolkiens world is in a constant, slow state of decay, with the characters struggling to hold off the "long night" and preserve something of the goodness of creation.

Elrond seemed like a great, wise lord, but his conversation with Gimli in the book pointed something out: he believes in everybody's potential in the fellowship except the dwarf. Elrond seems so wise and noble, but Gimli points out that even the best people can be prejudiced against other races and doubt their capabilities. This means Elrond himself is short-sighted.

Gimli overdoes his promise of loyalty to the fellowship of the ring, and Elrond cuts him down, saying not to promise to walk into the dark if you haven't seen nightfall. Elrond doesn't think much of Gimli's abilities as a short guy with an axe. He also doesn't believe Gimli's promise of loyalty when (as his actions later show) Gimli really meant it. Gimli tries to stay positive, but Elrond cuts him down. Elrond doesn't want to believe in Gimli and then become disappointed when Gimli doesn't prove a true and loyal member of the fellowship. Elrond is defensive.

This conversation also points out something interesting about Elrond. Elrond uses his serious, wise front as a way to combat the despairing thought that the mission might be betrayed by someone in plain sight. Elrond did not suspect Boromir, but Gimli. This means Elrond, kind and wise though he may be, judges appearances and not words, tone, or volume from someone's voice. He's not a good listener.

Elrond was just a bit too gloomy and testy in comparison with the character in the book, and Weaving, though a fine actor in my book, was a little too arrogant looking- if you've ever read "The Silmarillion," Weaving, in my mind, physically resembles the arrogant, insidious Feanor or one of his nastier offspring like Celegorm or Curufin. Just renewing my Tolkien dork membership card there with that last remark, lol... He did do a good job though...

A 4.5. Elrond is an elf-like human. He helped revive Frodo when he was injured. Elrond was there when Isildur deystroyed Sauron and took the ring. Elrond told Isildur to deystroy the ring but Isildur refused. Elrond had a daughter named Arwen who became Aragorn's love interest.

I never understood why Elrond was rated so high. When I watched the first movie with him speaking to the council, saying, One of you must do this, meaning, to take the ring into Mordor, I kept thinking, Why the heck didn't he do it? I mean, he was right there with Isildur when he just watched Isildur walking away with the ring. He was right there, right there at Mordor, staring at the fire. I'm like, Well, tackle him, for crying out loud! But no, he just watched Isildur calmly walk out of there with the ring. That's a great way to destroy it. But I guess if he'd a done that it would have defeated the whole purpose of the book. Great observation, myself. So I guess I'll give him a 2.5 because without him there wouldn't have been a book, much less a movie.

A very serious guy, but cool at the same time. He obviously loves his daughter and only wants whats best for her and his people. He lives in a gorgeous place. Rivendell is beautiful! And I love how all elves seem to have long hair. So I will leave you with the wise (sort of )Elvish words. Namaarie! *meaning farewell*

Lula, Elrond wants his daughter to LIVE, just as any good father would. I think he understands her conflict, but it hurts him to think of the pain she will have to endure in the future because he KNOWS she will eventually be separated from Aragorn, even under the best of circumstance. Any father would do whatever it took to protect his child. Hugo Weaving was a great choice for Elrond. (But I agree, it is a little disconcerting to look into Elrond's face and see the guy from Matrix!)

This is mostly for book-Elrond. Movie Elrond was alright, and the actor they had was cool but I still thought he was a bit of a lightweight for the role, metaphorically speaking. I didn't really understand why they had him talk Arwen into leaving for Valinor... and before the War was even over! What was up with that?

Great character, but I think he should've been a little more beautiful, (and Legolas a little less)

oh my god! how come that he was great, a very good and helpful character, and that now he turned bad and you can`t now if he would posibly kill aragorn?? He`s acting was very good, but why doesn`t he want Arwen to stay and wait for Aragorn? They look great together...

Its a bit hard to rate Elrond. He's really amazing as a character, but in seeing the movie... What a laugh! Not that the actor did a bad job... it was really good! Its just he's got that conniving villain look about him... like in the Matrix... and then its hard to think that hes not going to try to skewer Gandalf or whatever. But overall Elrond is essential to the plot, and really helps them over and over. Its just a bit hard that he doesn't help them physically although I understand his reasons.
