He is very funny. However, I don't see him lasting too long in a fight without Legolas or Aragorn to help him out.

Intriguing character. His conversation with Legolas regarding the lives of men as the two enter Minas Tirith in the book is one of the most telling speeches in the novel.

Gimli provides comic relief from all the grandeur the hobbits (and the reader) see all around them. Gimli, son of Gloin, can see beyond the art, architecture, splendor, and gems, and see what characters lie behind it. When approached by the Elves (people to behold), or by the men of Rohan, or even Aragon, he stands proud and says something questioning their character. Gimli didn't care what the men of Rohan looked like or their royal status. Instead he says, "Give me your name horsemaster, and I'll give you mine!" Gimli wants everything to be fair and square, to be treated as a person with a name, not to get caught up in the fact that he addressed the prince of Rohan as an equal and never acknowledged his signs of royalty (his hair, fancy shield, or beautiful horse).

Gimli is my least favorite member of the fellowship. He's a dwarf who carries an ax around. he wants to be a tough guy.

Gimli is hilarious! The scenes between him and Legolas are great! It's funny how they have competitions to see how many things they can kill! He does seem to be a bit of a pessimist though. but thats ok, I guess dwarfs are like that.

Gimli's awesome. I agree with Medgar and Mel. I never thought of the Dwarves as greedy in their mining and hoarding; just, maybe, compulsive by nature. Definitely a race apart; you appreciate them cause they don't emulate the Elves in their angelic beauty but are confident in the way they are and are content to live by their own ways. Also the Dark Lords of Middle-Earth history could never seduce them into servitude. Although Mortals were more easily ensnared Elves were conquered also - perverted into Orcs through long torment. Besides, in the development of the extraordinary friendship between Legolas and Gimli, I always thought of him as a sweetheart underneath; an honorable and hearty friend.

I liked Gimli...although in the movie they used him for comic relief, I wasn't that bothered by it.

Legolas and Grimli are like the two, who I like most. It surely is a strange friendship they´ve got, but that just shows how toolerant both races can be. I also like Grimli´s will to fight and kick some Orc-ass. He´s got a good sence of humor and sarcasm (for instance on the castle of Helms Deep), and last but not least he can tell great stories (if he likes even for hours and hours).

Gimli is proof positive that beauty is only skin deep, but that strength, wit, and character count for so much more. Dwarves are NOT classic beauties, yet they are entities that I would welcome as neighbors, much more so than the "mystical" elves (discounting the portrayal of Legolas, who is NOT typical of the elven race) Comic relief? Quite probably - yet dwarves have always had a certain "earthy" quality about them -pun intended. You cannot live that closely in and under the earth without being firmly "grounded" in reality. <Sorry, I'll stop now.>

Gimli is my favorite character second to Legolas. He is sarcastic and a great warrior. He also has can move you in sadness and you feel his desire in the battlefield.

I've been wondering how much Tolkien stole from mythology and how much he made up on his own. Who decided that dwarves were a greedy, plundering race? Gimli wasn't portrayed as the most likeable character in the film. The book doesn't draw on Gimli's stubbornness as much as in the movie, although he has his fair share of clashes with Legolas in the novel. I think Peter Jackson put Gimli in for some more comic relief but he is a fine representative for the dwarves and his dexterity with an axe aided the Fellowship in battle muchly.
