 | irishgit (151) 07/16/2008 | The most intriguing and courageous move that Tolkien made was never showing Sauron. Keeping him as an amorphous unseen evil makes him an incredibly powerful force. Again, as with all his evil characters, Tolkien makes Sauron more complex than expected, particularly when reading his back story.

I would add that readers seeking a more fleshed out portrayal of Sauron should read The Silmarillion, where he seldom appears except for a fascinating role in the story "Of Beren And Luthien." His personality is explored in some depth, exposing his evil nature more fully, in the collection of interesting loose ends known as "The Unfinished Tales" as well.

 | Lurker (0) 03/18/2002 | Sauron is the Lord of the Rings, a being both great and terrible. As such, I decided to average out my rating for him.
