From the sounds of some folks who learned their theology from Ian Paisley and Torquemada, the generalized application of their morals and values would clearly be oppressive. And they're damn proud of it.

Of course, you can't teach your child that which you don't practice.

Set up those strawmen and knock them down.

This is the silliest list I've seen on RIA so far.

You are a bigot if you believe that your morals and values make for legal and social policy. Then again, you might have a great future in Communist China if you believe this dogma bullsh#t.

I always find in funny when people talk about not accepting standard morals and values and argue everything is subjective. They then will undoubtable give you whole philosophy on what is wrong with the world while supporting another standard of ethics. Unless we are willing to deny our own existence any belief is an intrinsic belief. Any action or inaction has a value that is determined within a value structure. Things don't happen in a vacuum. Now at the core of this question is normally a bigotry toward Christian ethics and values that a predicated upon a Natural Law. The usual opponent of these ethics believes freedom is created through a valueless system of rights that are codified in a preexisting document the protects our individual actions through proper procedures. This however IS an ethical position of value- just different than the one that promotes Christian ethics.

There is no morality or value in bigotry.

Whether a person has morals or not, when you think about it, we are all bigots. Eg a violent gangster. They have their own sets of codes of behaviour except theirs is the complete opposite to ours. If anyone goes against their code or goes onto their turf and doesn't practice their rules, they will not tolerate that and will administer their own form of justice. An evil person isn't tolerent of good people and their views and finds their views repulsive. They find the rules of goodness very oppressive because it goes against their whole nature and takes away the things which give them joy. But with good people, they feel exactly the same way. If you were to tell an Angel of the Lord to steal, when a person hits them on one cheek, to smash them ten times harder, to hate other people, that Angel would find those rules oppressive because it takes away what makes them happy and it inhibits their natural good character. One could say that this means that good people have no right to condemn bad people. But good people are right because bad people's rules not only oppress good people, but bad people are oppressed, but they are willing to go through the oppression that a good person never experiences, just for a bit of pleasure. Goodness makes you happy. Why do you think that one of the 9 Fruits of the Spirit is joy. It took a good person to make Heaven!

Morals nnd values teach us how to behave around each other-what's wrong with that. It seems that fewer and fewer people are teaching these things now. I think people are a lot more rude than they were even 10 years ago. Knowing right from wrong that you shouldn't treat other people how you don't want to be treated is basic.

Nothing wrong at all with teaching your kids to be respectful of their fellow humans. Especially effective when taught by example, and not juts lecture. :)

Morals are good, but they must be taught and encouraged and NOT demanded.

Morals are not suppressive - they form part of the reason that we are human beings and have a state of awareness and conscience that other animals do not have. If we did not have them then society would crumble and there would be absolute anarchy.

This one is just a tad garbled. Are you saying morals suppress free thought and if you think otherwise you are bigoted? Or, are you saying that if you suppress a bigots morals s/he will not attend the Renaissance Fair with you? Or, maybe if you are a moralist you may also be a bigot if you enter a prize bull in the State Fair but only if the bull is a communist.

Nonsense. Morals are essential for the survival of humanity as it evolves into a golden age of peace and knowledge.
