I was living in Florida when many tried to keep Electricution. Some of these cousin lovin' Rednecks were quite sentimental over "Old Sparky". Just at that time there was another botched killiing by "The People". Finally lethal injection was made an option.

Today is August 6. On this day in history, in 1890, at Auburn Prison in New York, the first execution by electric chair is performed, with murderer William Kemmler as the subject.

It was used by more than 25 states throughout the 20th century, acquiring nicknames such as Sizzlin' Sally, Old Smokey, Old Sparky, Yellow Mama, and Gruesome Gertie.

Today four states still have it as a form of execution. In Nebraska, it is the sole form. In Alabama, South Carolina and Virginia, it is an optional form of execution.

Truly barbaric. It sounds like something a kid in his basement came up with while torturing insects. Should be done away with.

I hate to ask Vfern but....can you cite sources for your info? Seems to me the people that are most likely to know aren't around to talk about it. And I know that *I'M* not going to volunteer to find out!!!!
