A true horror show.

Supposedly the most unpleasant method of execution used in America, essentially making the condemned inmate complicit in his (or her) own death. I believe it was first used on an Asian inmate in Nevada in 1924. It became popular in California and Arizona. For as long as the inmate can hold his (or her) breath, they live. When they do succumb to the urge to breathe, they generally die thrashing and gasping for air as they slowly strangle on the poisonous gas fumes. Quite often, they vomit, drool and defecate on themselves in the process, which can take a very long time. After the execution, the chamber has to be fumigated to remove any lingering fumes and the body sprayed with liquid ammonia. Barbaric.
