Another great comic book movie. A nerdy teenager gets bit by a radioactive spider and gets powers that he uses to battle criminals. The effects are really good.

The first step is always the hardest to take, and in this case, forgivable - as it is the first step in the movie adaptation of Spiderman. The casting of the lead roles could have been chosen much better, but the storyline is pretty close to the comic version's bible theme. Power and Responsibility, and a whole lot of self-exploration. This is an adequate starter or origin story portrayal. At least there is some quirky moments and action to make Peter Parker relatable for people.

Special effects finally caught up to this great comic book story. Peter is a guy, just like us who gets amazing powers. Unfortunately, he can't have the girl. But, that's the lot in life for super heroes.
Jeremy00081 09/13/2006
This movie isn't that great. The sequel is better. I almost gave this one 2 stars but I decided it's barely worthy of three. Hopefully Spider-Man 3 is better than this and Spider Man 2. I'm not crazy about either of the first 2.
Djahuti 02/10/2006
On the lame side.Glad I saw it on DVD and didn't pay big bucks for the big screen.
fantasyfalles 07/04/2005
SO ROCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maomania 02/27/2005
Much better than I expected. I am not a cartoon hero fan, but they did a pretty good job on that. I enjoyed the storyline, even though I never read the comics. The acting was pretty good and the effects just amazing.
RunsWithWhiteW olves 09/15/2004
Good movie i like the rain seen.
WarGamefan93 08/25/2004
This movie is a really action-packed movie, but it's sequel has a tougher villian that spider-man is no match for.
CaptainCrunch 08/03/2004
I thought it was very good. Not as good as the second one, but good. However I don't see why it's classified as Sci-fi and fantasy ??
spoiledPRgirl8 8 07/24/2004
this movie was good!..does not compare to the second one thats for sure!!
ANSGARD 07/09/2004
crap, really crap... the beginning seemed good but then....went down down down
ClassicTVFan47 05/28/2004
I've always felt that Spider-Man was a bit too angst-ridden for my tastes. I don't like the fact that the hero has to make sacrifices and that he is at first unsure wheter to jump at the chance to fight for the side of good. However, the rest of the movie is pretty good. The special effects are great, especially in the action sequences. Kirsten Dunst shines as Mary-Jane Watson and Willem Dafoe does make a good villain. The ending of this movie, however, should have been much more optimsitic than it was. More like 3 1/2 stars.
tvtator 04/18/2004
The second best film about a superhero. Tobey Maquire was perfect as Peter Parker. Willem Dafoe goes a little overboard as the Green Gobblin. Kirsten Dunst is wonderful as Mary Jane Watson. In his short time in the film Cliff Robertson is not forgotten as Uncle Ben and sets the stage for Peter to become the hero. Story becomes weak and silly in some parts, but still manages to entertain.
Prof.Chaos 03/17/2004
Very good...and fairly close to the comic.
CherrySoda99 12/20/2003
Oh Spiderman. Such a wonderful movie. Great graphics. I want to fly like that. Tobey MaGuire, Kiersten Dunst, they all did really really well. This had to have been a hard movie to make. All the technology that was put into it. But it was worth it. Can't wait for Spiderman 2 ! *whispers With great power comes great responsibility*
irishgit 12/18/2003
Ho-hum. Since Spidey was my favourite comic book, I was hoping for better. Dafoe is just wretched as the Goblin.
Byrdiohead 12/08/2003
Alright this is a good picture and is definately worth seeing, but it doesn't rank in the stratosphere of sci-fi fantasy pictures. That may be due in part to its disposability. Eventually you get tired of this picture.
RLM007 11/05/2003
This was the first time that a movie has been correctly depicted on the big screen
kasuo 10/11/2003
A fun movie that seems to stay true to the Spider-Man mythos while having its own story.
comedyfreek 09/27/2003
i enjoyed this movie...i thot the effects and all will be shitty but they really did a good job with it..the last scene was really cool...the story was carried out well,...the sequel will be much better with doc oc in it
forgotten hero 04/12/2003
A fantastic piece of work. Like a comic book but without the reading. Stays true to the comic except for a few minor parts that only the obsessed would stress over. Sets the bar at a whole new level for comic book movies.
kamylienne 03/17/2003
I never was much of a fan of Spider-Man (I thought that the character is pretty wussy, but to be fair, that's because I watched the cartoons only), so I went in not expecting too much. But, I think the story was told pretty well. Willem DeFoe is an incredible actor, and I don't think any other actor could have pulled that character off like he did. The CG was used in such a way that it didn't overshadow the whole thing (which was good, because I expected it to be just another spectacle of the wonderful world of computers). Yeah, it was predictable, and the wet t-shirt show in the rain was gratuitous, but overall I think it's worth seeing.
Redoedo 03/02/2003
Never having been a big fan of Superhero movies, I was quite impressed with this one. The movie ended with me being satisfied. Toby McGuire was the perfect choice to play the nerdy Peter Parker who is bitten by a spider, transforming him into a super hero. William Defoe was also the perfect choice to play the Green Goblin. I love the movie's comical scenes too, as well as its sad ones and the love story between Peter Parker and MJ (typical superhero movie stuff). A great movie- the best movie ever to be based on comic books!
Alejandro Rivas 02/03/2003
Is that Peter Parker or Peter Pan? He's like 18 but he has been in love just once with a girl who he thought she was an angel. Can anyone be more affected than that? In this childish Disneylike version of Spiderman, there are only things that we have seen once and again through decades. Of course the nerd uses thick glasses and of course he's constantly teased by big gorillas (Is this 'Saved by the Bell'?). All what appears in this flick is a refried cliché and with an unbearable humour 'for the whole family'. Add to that many stupids unexplainables references to DC characters what makes you think not even Sam Raimi was taking this seriously but for the sake of the money and the easy laughter. The action secquences are barely good but nothing we haven't seen in many other 'movies of the week'. Green Goblin is not a scary haloweenesque character anymore. He's just a green Power Ranger. Plus, why hire great Willem Dafoe if you're gonna hide his face behind a plastic mask? Goblin could have been a stunt all the time. The irony, however, is present: Kirsten Dunst is told to take acting lesson and Goblin sums up the entire movie: "Spiderman, you're pathetically predictable". And obvius, should I add. "With a great budget comes great responsability. Remember that, Sam, remember that".
psycho_mom 11/16/2002
I would have given it 4 stars if not for the rain scene. If I wanted to see a wet t-shirt contest, I woudln't have gone to see this movie. That was just a little much with the nipples and all. The story was good, much better than the average movie of this type. Toby McGuire did an excellent job in this role. This was also the first movie of this type to actually have a believable outcome for the "bad guy" transformation. Willem Dafoe is an excellent actor (loved him in Shadow of the Vampire!).
Teaseress 11/13/2002
Saw this pretty soon after it came out and I really enjoyed it. I thought the computer graphics were really great and the casting of characters were pretty much up there. the storyline was well executed and it was easy to understand and enjoy. This si something that people shouldn't take too seriously. Just enjoy it!
Bludragonflyy 11/12/2002
I liked this movie , the only thing wrong with it was that some of the scenes with the Green Goblin looked a little fake. But overall, it was pretty good, even for people who hadn't read the comics (like me)
lukskywlkr. 11/06/2002
Highly entertaining movie. Makes you forget about the real world for a couple of hours, and that's what movies are all about. I wondered about Tobey Mcguire at first, but he did a great job. And thank God they got Willem Defoe to play the Goblin instead of, say, Nicholson or Jim Carrey. What makes me like this even more is the fact that spidey can shoot webs out of his wrists naturally instead of having those lame cartridges like in the comics and tv show. After all, he has the wall crawling capability and the spider-sense, so it just stands to reason he would naturally have a way to make his own webs. About the only thing I would have changed would be all the computer generated effects. When they are doing a building or something else inanimate, you can't really tell if it's fake or not because you aren't really looking at it all that close. But, when it's a real person they are trying to put on the screen, it's very noticeable. That may not bother a lot of people, but for me, it's a distraction, but only a small one. Overall, I would highly recommend this to kids and adults alike.

Didn't live up to the hype.

When I went to see Spiderman it had only been released a couple of days. It was very crowded and it seemed to me that the theater was filled with two very different groups of people. Half the crowd had never read a Spiderman comic book, and knew absolutely nothing about the characters. The other half knew way too much about Spidey to be healthy. Before the movie started I said to my wife that one half of the audience or the other would have to be disappointed. If it were deep enough to impress the experts it would be way over the heads of the novices. I could not have been more wrong. The whole audience was entertained and everyone enjoyed it. The movie is about 90% true to the comic book. I remember seeing this movie advertised in theaters before the September attacks. In those early promos they showed an amazing scene where Spiderman spun a web between the Twin Towers and caught a helicopter. After the attacks, the movie's release was held up and all scenes of the Towers were removed. Some day, in the future, when the wounds heal, I would like to see the original version and compare it to what was released.

I was expecting some big budget dumb storyline movie like deep blue sea......yet once the movie got underway I was pleasantly surprised. I have never been a big fan of Spiderman, never even read the comic, yet somehow I also knew of him. The stunts in this movie were amazing, as well as the visual graphics and although the plot was a little weak, it still entertained me right to the end. The choice of Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker is questionable...but he puts on a great performance anyhow. Surprisingly I am looking forward to the sequel.
hardcorechic 07/14/2002
i have to say that this is one of the best movie adaptations of a comic that i have ever seen. the characters are realistic, and the effects were amazing.
tworebel 07/02/2002
I really liked this movie. Tobey McGuire was a great Spiderman. The movie had a great story and plot. The way the movie ended sounded as though there will be a sequel. Hopefully.
H[]T_Rodgers 06/13/2002
Now this is more like it. Finally a superhero movie that actually resembles the comic books. God I loved this movie. I have to tell everybody out there that this is already one of my all-time favorite movies. If spider-man is your favorite superhero please god you have to see this one.
djbuddha 06/12/2002
I thought that X-Men would be the best comic book movie ever made, but I was proven wrong. This movie is simply amazing. I was very impressed with the way that it was presented, and that it stayed mostly true to the comic. I can't wait for it to be released on DVD.
Yadayada 06/11/2002
Now for you big fans i don't mean to dampen the fabulous hype if Spiderman, but after seeing it, i was a bit disappointed. All of the hype about it fails to mention the big soppy bits in it that drag down the movies appealing tone. The characters and acting are great and i commend them on their performances especially Willem Defoe who plays a great physco-mutant-man. The effects were astonishing and overall made the movie what it is. But, i do find that the let down was the soppy love story and its intervention with the story. Their is more focus on the damsel in distress than on the task at hand. Overall, a good movie that shines through, but don't be suprised at the let down of the story when it comes to love.
Zuraya 06/02/2002
I thought this was a reasonably good movie, tobey maguire put up a great performance and the stunts were amazing......think i might go and see it again.
oodie 05/22/2002
i've recently dubbed this the greatest Super-Hero movie I have evern seen. Second, being the equally entertaining X-men. Spidey has all the action and origin intrigue of a great hero film as well as some superbly directed shots. Tobey McGuire is clearly a fantastic choice as exuberant yet nedry shy, Peter Parker. Willem Defoe is frightening in general. He's much worse as the Green Goblin. Also, another benefit of having these actors is the smart way in which they pull off the typically comic book dialogue. Both DeFore and McGuire give the movie some classy weight...as does Kirsten Dunst. One can hope this style of film making will be a constant throughout the budding Spider-man franchise....unless McGuire bolts or they get Joel Schumaker to direct, they should be fine.
Agent_wolf 05/21/2002
The whole reason why i went to it was because of Kirsten but after i seen the movie i thought that the it was very well done, entertaining and toby did a good job as well. Good show.
Waz22 05/21/2002
Pretty cool movie if you can get passed the often below-par cgi work. As a comic-book movie, it succeeds with surprising gusto. Having said that, I feel the producers did take advantage of that (the scene were the New Yorkers are throwing things off of the Brookyln Bridge at the Green Goblin is a stretch). Willem Dafoe's character (both of them) were rather thinly-drawn in my opinion. But overall, "Spider-Man" is a good movie.
Molfan 05/20/2002
Our whole family saw this today.{ a big deal for all four of us to agree on a movie LOL} I thought it was pretty good. Tobey McGwire was perfect as Peter Parker the quiet "nerdish" high school boy who gets bit by a "special spider" He soon finds out he has these spider like powers. After his uncle is killed by a thief he decides to help out others who are in danger. Of course as in any comic book hero movie there is the Villan who has his own powers. the pretty girl next door he has a crush on.I did not read the spiderman comics but from what i have heard, the movie stays close to the comics. I thought it was a pretty well done movie.
Boonta23 05/18/2002
It was a very good movie, it followed the cartoon very well, but the only reason it gets a 4 is that it was too predictable.
yoshislink 05/07/2002
starts out great fineshes poorly.

What a shocker! This is one of the few movies that has actually exceeded the hype. This is a must see. I can't wait for the Incredible Hulk in 2003.

fun movie for whole family
Potch1214 05/06/2002
I absolutely LOVED Spider-Man! To me, it is the best of ALL of the comic book movies ever made. (Yes, even better than Superman!) Tobey Maguire was a bold choice on director Sam Raimi's part, but he nailed it! Kirsten Dunst was very good as Mary Jane Watson, however the only critique was that she always seemed much more self-assurred than in the movie. That, and she ALWAYS called Pete "Tiger". The guy playing Triple-J was AWESOME! He nailed him perfectly! Willem Dafor was a great choice for Gobby! Highly recommended! (For a more indepth review by me, please go to www.overtime.blogspot.com).
DeathRattle 05/05/2002
The best comic adaptation ever! It's just like reading the comics from beginning to end. Stan Lee really made sure this film would be a mirror image of the comic storyline. It portrayed the Green Goblin saga perfectly (especially the ending). Great acting (even by the portayed newcomer Toby McGwire). Very realistic as well. The movie shows Peter Parker having to learn and perfect his superpowers instead of just knowing them in an instant. He also moves very gracefully as well (as he should). I only have one complaint. Originally in the comic series, Spider Man's webs were shot out through special machines Parker created instead from his wrist. A solid film all the way through. That's the reason why the film is sold out at every theater.
