Grand Funk Railroad is one of the best rock and roll bands ever. They are still playin and rocking. To all you morons that posted negative comments earlier on here. you apparently do not know what good music is.

Have their moments, but not really one of the great hard rock bands of their time. The best songs , in my opinion, that they put out were some of their earlier obscure album tracks like "People let's stop the war" off of E.Pluribus Funk, and " Sin's a Good Man's Brother " from The Closer to Home Album. The mark of a great group, to me, is not how many hits they had or how many magazine covers they graced, but how many outstanding album cuts they recorded that you will NOT hear on top 40 radio today. By this measure, they don't really stack up to the true heavyweights of their genre(s). Have their share of duds, but at least they had a social conscience too. Pale in comparison to British contemporary outfits like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Black Sabbath, as well as fellow American groups such as Mountain.

Greatest rock band ever. Don Brewers drumming was my influence for becoming a drummer myself. Their live performances could not be touched by other bands no matter how hard the tried. Their version of Gimme Shelter totally destroyed the stones. Rumor has it Mark Farners guitar on Gimme Shelter is the reason why poor old Keith shacks so bad. Well just a rumor. And lets not forget the strong & outstanding Bass of Mel Schacher. Simply put, Never has been nor never will be a rock band like GRAND FUNK RAILROAD

Perhaps I never really listened to their stuff a lot, but I was listening to some satellite classic riock feed while eating at a local taco store here in Nashville that caters to souless, white southern yuppies. I'm Your Captain came on (a song that I've heard way too much as a staple on classic rock formats) and I thought to myself, This song sucks. It's the same old boring chord progression and melody played out monotonously over too many minutes. And it doesn't say anything. At the time, I didn't even know the name of the song or who it was by. Then I did some research on google using the words I'm your captain and found out it was GFR. God, whoever came up with that song I'm Your Captain should be shot for displaying a complete lack of musical talent or creativity. We're an American Band was a good song with a great instrumental introduction. My understanding is that this was off of an album produced by Todd Rundgren, so this would explain a lot. Locomotion was also kind of interesting. However, most of everything else that I've heard by the group seems pretty forgettable. No wonder they're such a forgettable band. In fact, instead of We're an American Band, they're motto should just be this: We're a forgettable band. The Stones, the Who, Cream, or even Zeppelin and the Buffalo Springfield they'll never be. As someone said, and it seems about right, they seem like just a bunch of poorly talented and opportunistic artists who were about nothing more than trying to make cash in the music business.

I was fortunate enough to attend the 1971 Shea Stadium concert where Humble Pie (with 18 year old Peter Frampton) opened for them. Those who did not live through the glory days of GFR would have no way of knowing the entire picture. The reason for their initial success was because they were giving the public what it wanted at that time. There was a market for hard driving rock and roll that didn't have any subliminal messages or causes to promote. Grand Funk Railroad was what it was. You turned it on, you turned it up, and you loved it. In my opinion, GFR would never have done songs like Locomotion, Some Kind Of Wonderful, or American Band if they had not been forced to change musical directions due to a horrible dispute with their manager, Terry Knight. At one point it came very close to damaging everyone's career. His word of mouth slander caused the whole deck of cards to come crashing down literally overnight. I was in high school at the time and I recall that one day Grand Funk was the biggest name in town and the next day, all of a sudden, Grand Funk sucks. The details of the dispute left them with no alternative but to start over in a new direction. But in the days when their first few albums were current, along with their live double album, Grand Funk Railroad gave their fans what they wanted. We will never know what would have lay in store if Grand Funk Railroad had remained a less commercially viable hard rock band.

Probably the very worst band ever to sell millions of records and play stadiums. I wasn't alive when they were at their commercial peak, but I listen to their stuff now and I just shake my head at how badly they suck. They sound like a halfway-serious garage band, but I know a number of garage bands that are way way better than GFR. The only competent musician was the bass player, the guitar player tended to hide his complete lack of talent behind distortion and effects, the singer was terrible and off key, and the drums were sloppy. I heard their version of Gimme Shelter and it was an appalling act of butchery, with no sense of musicality or emotion. Don't even ask about their cover of the Locomotion. If people think that music in the seventies was so great, just mention these guys. They sucked sucked sucked.

I worked at K-mart (Ugh!) in Petoskey Michigan and sold a watch battery to Mark Farner about 10 years ago. I didn`t mention that I knew who he was, he seemed like a regular guy, living out his life in a small resort town. I had heard that he had a near death experience and was totally into religion. Amazingly quiet existence for the 70`s greatest (and most underrated) frontman. Listen to how strong his vocals are on the live stuff. Mel & Don are intense musicians, and Don sings very well too. Capital Records gave them the shaft, like soooo many Michigan bands got from their record companys or management (or both!) Just ask Ted (Nugent), Bob (Seger), Dick (Wagner). Now, Alice Cooper seems to have done better with his contracts,.....must have been the booze. Anyway, GFR will always have a special place of honor in my own personal Hall of Rock and Roll.

I followed this group since 1970, with "RED ALBUM" as my introduction to hard rock. There has been no band close to energy to which these three young men produced. They became famous from their word of mouth of concerts and raw sound of rock. Mark, Don & Mel stood against hard drug use and lived without controversy. The hit Loco-Motion became the band second #1 song, and was a previous at #1 hit for Little Eve. A feat that is hard to match. ....My American Band. The RED Album The Sabertooth Tigers' "cat's meow" of GFR!*****On Time - Felix the Cats' 'the b&w of Funk'*****Closer To Home - Florida Panthers' pounce of thunder!*****Live Album - Lions' share of Funk on the loose*****Survival - Mountain Lions' rocky wilderness domain!*****E Pluribus Funk - The Bobcats' small round furious wildcat!*****Mark, Don & Mel 1969-71 - Tom Cat, the slickness of Funkest!*****Grand Funk Lives! Morris the Cat, the many lives funk *****What's Funk? - El Salvodors' Jaguar, the jungle funk of ROCK!*****Live In 1971 - Lynxs - that's missing link of FUNKENSTEIN!

best live group ever!!!
NoLies 06/24/2002
Bar none, the best live band on the planet. Although dissed by critics in the early days, the fans have always identified with and loved their music. The count of gold and platinum albums speak for themselves! Grand Funk Railroad should have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame *years* ago.
e.tilbury 06/21/2002
the album were an amerikan band says all, don't look back we are going rock!

Grand Funk Railroad... the best ever! Mark's vocals, Mel's bass, and Don's drumming... it doesn't get better!!
Dr. Shock 06/20/2002
Grand Funk Railroad, The American Band.... that says it all. This band spoke not to economically priviledge who went to college or bought their way out of going to Viet Nam; it spoke to the labor force's children. Its music was simplistic in nature, but complex in content; and, inspired many future rock bands.
mgonutz 06/19/2002
The AMERICAN BAND, the BEST IN THE LAND. Deal with that!! GO SEE 'EM FOR YOURSELVES!!

Do NOT miss a GFR show when they come near you. I was TOTALLY blown away by the excellent musicianship of these guys. Don Brewer plays w/ more energy than ANY drummer around, Mel's bass rocks you to the core. Max Carl is the ultimate frontman, Tim Cashion adds amazing keyboards and soulful harmonies. Then there's Bruuuuuce Kulick - GUITAR GOD!!!!! 'Nuff said..... Don't miss out!! www.grandfunkrailroad.com

The #1 AMERICAN band from '69 to '74. 'Nuf said.
Nocturnal4 06/17/2002
This group is still alive and doing concerts with NEW songs. Just went to their concert 2 days ago and I was blown away. I went last August as well, and if it was even possible, this last one was even better than the first. They are fresh, new and alive and still rockin' - WHEN they come to your town, don't miss it! You will be blown away! After the concert, go home and burn your Bangles vinyls..

I dont think anyone listens to Grand Funk except for white kids, who are to afraid of real SOUL and funk music. They may have laid the ground work for a lot of modern bands(a theory I could easily dispute) but let's look at the crappy bands thet helped to birth. their music is nothing, except slick garbage. the only time i've ever enjoyed Grand Funk is one those horrid trips to clubs, where the nostalgia and kische hungry youth of America danced to Grand Funk, as if they were in the studio when the music was made.

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD is Loud & Proud. Power trio from the late 60's and has influenced many bands over the years. Do they get their due?-NO!! But true fans of the band know they are simply the poster child for for heavy and loud, GREAT music. Long live GRAND FUNK RAILROAD!!!
Jim Maijala 06/17/2002
Perhaps the best live band ever! Their brand of Arena Rock never stops! If it wasn't for GFR you may have never heard of many of the hard rock and metal bands of the 80's and 90's.
Celinda 06/16/2002
Catch a GFR concert soon. What a treat.

Truely the American Band. For over 30 years the music of this band has stood the test of time. From bad press to bad managment in there early years, could not keep the music from the people. The band only got better, and was accepted by more people. I am proud to say in the year 2002, more GrandFunk Railroad music will be released. July 2, and also sometime in August. I am very happy for all this, now my children can grow up with some of the best Rock the world has known.

Grand Funk Railroad is a cool band. Good lyrics and good vocals. I listen to a bit of their material on the radio.
"Country Road"Kevin 06/16/2002
Everything I could say has already been said. All I can say is that their music grabbed me at the age of 14 and hasn't let go yet! Grand Funk Railroad is the best rock band every. Period. Anyone who "doesn't get what the fuss was about" may as well go listen to disco!!
mmsmarjar 06/16/2002
Being a die-hard fan since '69 and continuing through today, I can only say that rarely has any music (or musicians) continued to inspire such passion within me. They are a band of the people - for the people.. critics have never liked them, but since when did that stop anyone? It certainly hasn't stopped GFR. So.. in conclusion... all I can say is FOREVER IN THE FUNK!!
Dave McKenzie 06/16/2002
Grand Funk Railroad...nothing more needs to be said. The GREATEST rock band ever assembled! Through their first rise to glory, the attempted derailment by then producer, Terry Knight, and their ability to rise again, GFR has proven that it's what the people want, not the establishment, that's important. I've been listening to GFR since 1970 and will continue to until the end.
jwhetnc 06/16/2002
I've always loved GFR. They were the first albumn I had - and they've always been special to me. Their music is unique.
lisah1upsetter 06/16/2002
Mark Farner's vocals are the best! His soaring tenor remains unmatched by any other artist, even today!
Larry McDaniel 06/16/2002
Grand Funk is perhaps the greatest live show band that ever hit the stage.Their music has spanned 2 generations now and is timeless,soulful,hard-rocking,and most has a very positive message. Some of their songs have dealt with crooked politicians, concern for the environment, love your fellow man, being in relationships, and some blues but all is the type that families can enjoy.Grand Funk, great musicians, but better people.
rickofmis 06/15/2002
Greatest Rock and Roll band to ever play. Always a great perfomance. Fantastic albums from On Time to Good Singin Good Playin. The new line up is the best yet with a lot to look forward to in the future.

Red Album thru EPF, they were fantastic.
Rocknurse 06/15/2002
Grand Funk Railroad, Mark, Don and Mel, wrote the book on high energy Rock 'n Roll performance. No one before them or after them has been able to work a crowd into a frenzy the way they did. Even their studio albums were high energy.I know that it's obvious, but I LOVE this band. They helped to shape me into the man that I am today. Because of Grand Funk, I give my "all" in everything that I do.
Magicman 06/15/2002
They were the hottest band on the planet!
tigger2 06/15/2002
Grand Funk is one of the bands in the seventies that laid the groundwork for many to follow. Many of today's groups claim that Grand Funk was a major influence. Their music was so liked by their fans that many of their albums went gold on the first day they were released. Grand Funk was the first American rock group to sell out Shea Stadium, and then they sold Shea out faster than the Beatles. Speaking of the Beatles, after the Beatles broke up Grand Funk was Capitol’s goose laying the golden eggs. You wouldn’t know it today with the way Capitol has been treating Grand Funk’s catalog of gold and platinum records. Many have not been released on CD yet. It would be great to see Grand Funk in the Rock ‘N’ Roll Hall of Fame also.
gfrfan 05/27/2002
The undisputed Kings of the "Great White Noise"laid all the groundwork for many of todays bands. So what if critics still hate 'em- they were and always will be the people's band - The American Band! GRAND FUNK LIVES!!! 1
