Brilliant, audacious to the point of reckless, and blessed with luck as well as skill. One of the great naval tacticians in history.

Surely both Britain's greatest military genius and the most brilliant of all naval commanders. And i've no moral qualms in awarding him 5 stars either.A brave and inspiring leader, who famously lost an eye and an arm in battle,he was a national hero for his daring victories at Cape St Vincent,The Nile(where he destroyed the French fleet- well described by Wiggum),Copenhagen(where, not for the first time,he turned a blind eye to orders)and finally at Trafalgar, the decisive battle(where he was killed)which thwarted Napoleonic plans for invasion and ensured full British naval supremacy for decades. His affair with Lady Emma Hamilton, whom he met at Naples, scandalised society.Despite the nation's gratitude, marked by his column at Trafalgar Square, after his death his plea that she and their illegitimate daughter Horatia be well cared for was ignored and Emma died in poverty in France.

Nelsons battles at the Nile and Traflagar are legendary in Naval history. It's almost too bad we will never see a Naval battle like that again.

His personal bravery - some would describe it as "foolhardiness" - inspired and encouraged his men and his tactical skills led to great victories for his country.

I'm not too familiar with Nelson's entire career, but based solely on Trafalgar and the Battle of the Nile, I'm giving him five stars. I think his performance in the Battle of the Nile impresses me the most. Here he is faced with this superior French fleet, anchored tight against the Egyptian shore, and he makes the daring, dangerous call to take his ships into the very shallow water between the French ships and the shore. The French, never thinking someone would or could do this, have all their guns pointing away from the shore, so the English end up decimating them and effectively ensuring English superiority on the sea for years and years. If Nelson had been in the movie "Top Gun" during that battle, his first mate would have turned to him and said, "Gutsiest move I ever saw, Mav."
