Not only a great military leader, he, like Julius Caesar was a great statesman, politican, humanist and a great leader. His epic march over the Andes is one of the great feats of military history.

The Great Liberator, the leading patriot general who was instrumental in overthrowing Spanish rule in several South American Countries in the 19th century.Today he is still the national hero of not only his birth country Venezuela but also Bolivia(named after him),Colombia(its first president when a much larger nation),Ecuador and Peru!A military and political giant, too often forgotten in European and English-speaking countries.

Bolivar is probably the hero of Latin America. He visited the United States and saw how great our system of government is and how well it could work in locations where there was utter turmoil. He did this and was an influence in the U.S. writing the Monroe Doctrine.
