Sarajevo is the capital and largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sarajevo was founded in 1461 by the Ottomans and has a current population of approximately 400,000 residents. Sarajevo was the sight of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, an event that sparked WWI. In 1992 Sarajevo was surrounded by Bosnia forces in a siege that lasted until 1995, which left the city in virtual ruins (by 2003 Sarajevo had mostly been rebuilt). The Miljacka River runs through Sarajevo. Sarajevo was also host to the 1984 winter Olympics.
