I would have said that this Super Bowl was the greatest of all-time if it were not for Super Bowl XLII and all the aspects that surrounded that game. The Silver Anniversary edition of the Super Bowl was the closest Super Bowl in history, obviously, and the Bills were big favorites because of their high-powered offense and very good defense. Both teams were 13-3 and the Bills beat the Giants 17-13 during the season, in that game Phil Simms ruptured his Achilles Tendon and was replaced by Jeff Hostetler for the rest of the season and playoffs. The Giants beat the Bears easily and then beat the 49ers (They were trying to three-peat) in dramatic fashion in the last seconds of the game. The Bills cruised through the playoffs by crushing the Dolphins and Raiders. In the Super Bowl the Giants contained the no-huddle offense of the Bills, the Bills were the first team to run that offense the entire game (The Bengals with Boomer Esiason did it before the Bills, but not as often or as effective as the Bills did). The defensive game plan that Bill Belichick devised for the Giants is in the Hall of Fame, he told the team that in order for them to win they had to let Thurman Thomas run for a 100 yards. The team thought he was nuts, but bought into it anyway and he was right because the Bills did not get any big pass plays, which is why the Bills were blowing people out all season. The Giants offense played great defense as well by holding on to the ball a record 40:33 and not allowing the Bills many offensive touches. There were no turnovers in the game and Thurman Thomas could have easily won the MVP award and became only the second player in Super Bowl history to do so playing on the losing team. It was a great game and went down to Scott Norwood's "Wide Right" 47 yard field goal attempt as time ran off the clock and the Giants won their second Super Bowl in four years and the Bills lost their first of four in a row (The Bills only good chance of winning in their four straight Super Bowl losses). This game was also the last game that Bill Parcells coached the Giants as well as the last game for Bill Belichick as their defensive coordinator. This was the best Super Bowl until Super Bowl XLII.

A great game right down to the last play.

It was certainly a close game and may have cost Scott Norwood the rest of his career. I actually won a bet on that missed field goal. I was watching in a bar and I turned to a friend that was pulling for the Bills (I was pulling for the Giants) and bet him a beer he'd miss. My friend thought he had an easy free beer. Guess not.

GREATEST SUPERBOWL EVER

Well, it was the closest the Bills got I guess. The other losses were a bit more pronouced of course. I guess I was lucky, living in Toronto I got to see the games and follow along but the pain of the losses was mitigated somewhat. It's sad, the Bills had such a great team back then, a true dynasty, surely they deserved one championship.

Norwood... (numbah chuckles)

An amazing game with two teams with different styles. . .a classic match of strength versus speed/skill. . .a classic to be sure. . .

I was 9 years old when I watched this. I remember a few previous SB's being blowouts, this was actually a very competitive game. Hostetler pulled a great performance despite being a 2nd stringer. And please give old Scott Norwood a break-I felt so bad for him.

It was a tight game and a well-played contest. The thing that impressed me was the genius of Bill Parcells (and his assistant Bill Belichick), in neutralizing Buffalo's No-Huddle offense by using 2 down lineman for just about the whole game and keeping a dime package in the secondary. While everyone is quick to malign Scott Norwood on his last-second missed field goal, just remember 47 yards is no chip shot. If you recall, this game was shortly before DESERT STORM. Due to threats of terrorism, the pre-game festivities were curtailed immensely (Thank You, Saddaam).

The Super Bowl I most enjoyed out of all of them. Great game, crappy weather with an exciting finish. It was just another peice of the puzzle for the biggest dissapointment in the history of pro sports, Jim Kelly's Buffalo Bills.

Because I hate the Pariots, this is my highest-rated Super Bowl. How great were the Bills that year? So great the Giants had the ball literally twice as long yet only won by a point due to a missed FG. I said to myself afterwards that if the Bills didn't that Super Bowl they'd never win one, and it looks like I was right. I also call this the "Time Of Possession Game" because for the next decade afterwards time of possession was *the* chic stat to quote when a team won, as if the other team's defense suddenly all fainted from exhaustion if they were on the field longer than 30 minutes. Never mind that if Norwood's kick goes though, all that time of posession would've been utterly meaningless.

It was a great Super Bowl. One of the top 3 of all-time! Whitney Houston National Anthem will always be remembered. There was the Curse for the Red Sox on Babe Ruth for a long time. Maybe there should be a Norwood curse. Because he missed the field goal and the Bills lost 3 more Super Bowls. Plus the Bills had OJ Simpson, if you know what I mean.

Nice respite in the midst of a string of boring blowouts.

Whitney Houston national anthem was best ever! And the game decided at the end! It is a sad game years later because the Bills would lose 3 more Super Bowls in a row. Can't blame Norwood really, how many people in the world could kick a 47 yard field goal?

an exciting game start to finish. My heart goes out to scotty norwood. Can you imagine what he felt like after that game? then again, it takes three balls to kick a super bowl winning field goal. I guess adam vinatieri has 6 balls!

Poor Buffalo! They were whipped in three of the four Super Bowls they played in, but this is the one they should have won.
ricottma 08/15/2003
I will kill Scott Norwood if I can find him

The most boring game, I don't care for New York teams.

Can't stand Buffalo, but I hate the Giants even more.
