Super Bowl XXIII (1989, San Francisco 20, Cincinnati 16) 5

I rank it the 3rd best Super Bowl of all time. Montana hit John Taylor with a TD pass with just 34 seconds left in the contest. Just a few plays earlier, Lewis Billups dropped an easy pick that would have sealed the game for Cincy. Billups life went downhill from there and he sufferred an untimely death.

Super Bowl XXIII (1989, San Francisco 20, Cincinnati 16) 4

A surprisingly competitive game considering the sheer awfulness of Super Bowls at that time, but that was the most anticlimactic game-winning drive ever. EVERYBODY watching knew the Niners would score, even the Bengals! Cris Collinsworth PREDICTED to his teammates on the sideline that Montana would win. Way to have faith in your team, Cris. To this day, Collinsworth has a pathological worship/fear of the Niners because of that game.

Super Bowl XXIII (1989, San Francisco 20, Cincinnati 16) 3

Everyone forgets the 1st half of this one - a defensive affair , the score was tied , at either 6 , or 6-3 .It wasn't until Stanford Jennings ran back the kickoff for a TD at the very end of the 3rd Quarter , that the game finally got rolling . a Great 4th Quarter , and a great finish , but the Bengals' offense (Which was the best in the AFC that season ) never got going the entire game ;Esiason threw for only,I believe, 118 yards, and , neither Icky Woods , or James Brooks did much on the ground , either . All they could do was get them close enough for Jim Breech's 3 FG's - their only TD was made by the special teams . If it weren't for their defense , and especially , had Tim Krumrie not grusomely broken his leg the 49ers would've done to them , what they did to Denver the next year .Their defense nearly won the game singlehandedly (And , just before Jerry Rice's TD in the 4th , one Bengal DB dropped a sure interception of a Montana pass in the end zone ,which might have turned the game around for them ), keeping them in the game ,until the end .

Super Joe Montana walks onto the field down 16-13, staring at 80+ yards to victory and a shaky huddle in front of him.....looks down, through the end zone....into the crowd and says to the huddle, Hey guys.....Isn't that John Candy???.....Montana to Taylor......Touchdown. 49ers win 20-16.

This was the greatest stage for professional football's greatest winner, as Joe Montana led the 49ers to the promise land in the biggest gane. Who can forget the drama as the 49ers started deep inside their own territory? And with Randy Cross being called for holding, a combination of a ticking time clock and the icy determination of Joe Montana made for the greatest touchdown pass in Super Bowl history to John Taylor. With all due respect to Super Bowls XXXII, XXXIV, XXXVI and XXV, Super Bowl XXIII was the greatest ever.

Two great teams, contrasting styles and the best two minute drill putting on a clinic, too bad SF won.

A great game. Belongs in the top five of games in my opinion. Very exciting and well played by both teams, yes, even the Bengals!
