This is proof that the Elway worshippers might need to settle down. There were lean days without Terrell Davis...

I was alive for this one but not old enough to remember.

This game was all Denver's, until the 2nd quarter that is. On Denver's first play from scrimmage HOF QB John Elway, launched a 56 yard bomb to rookie WR Ricky Nattiel for a TD 1:47 into the game. The next time The Broncos had the ball the marched right down the field in a drive, which included, a reception by John Elway himself. The Redskins stopped Denver at the 6 yard line and The Broncos settled for a filed goal and a 10-0 lead. Until Super Bowl XXII, no team had ever come back when trailing by more than 7 points, even worse, no team trailing by more than 7 points had gotten back to tie the game. Denver's defense started out strong. They didn't allow The Redskins past midfield on their 1st two possessions. Late in the 1st quarter Redskins QB, Doug Williams, dropped back to pass and when he went to plant his foot he twisted his knee. It seemed like it couldn't get any worse for The Skins until back QB Jay Schroeder was immediately sack by Broncos DE, Karl Mecklenberg. The 1st quarter ended with The Broncos completely dominiating the ball game 10-0 and there was absolutely nothing to indicate that The Broncos would suffer one of the worst defeats in Super Bowl history.
In the most electrifying quarter of football history, The Redskins scored 5 TD's on 5 straight possessions in the 2nd quarter on a bevy of big plays. Doug Williams returned to the game and on his first play of the 2nd quarter he found WR Ricky Sanders for an 80 yard TD reception, to make the game 10-7. With The SKins right back in the game, they took their second possession 64 yards on only 5 plays to the house. The drive culminated in a 27 yard TD reception by WR Gary Clark. On The Redskins next possession Doug Williams hit WR Gary Clark for a 16 yard reception and on the very next play, RB Timmy Smith (who still holds the Super Bowl record for rushing yards 204 yards on 22 carries, for all of you trivia buffs) took the ball 58 yards for a TD. Denver again, went 3 and out and gave the ball back to The Redskins who, in 3 plays scored another TD on a 50 yard reception by Ricky Sanders. Sanders would catch 9 passes for 193 yards which would be a record (until Jerry Rice broke it next season with 221 Yards receiving). After John Elway was intercepted by Redskins CB Barry Wilburn, The Redskins, led by Doug Williams went 79 yards for a TD in just over 1:00. Redskins TE Clint Didier ended the TD drive with an 8 yard TD reception. The Redskins set Super Bowl records by scoring 35 points on, an incredible, 356 yards of offense in the second quarter alone.
Timmy Smith would add a 4th quarter TD in a 42-10 Redskins romp. QB Doug Williams was named Super Bowl MVP. He completed 17-28 for 340 yards and 4TD's

this game had it all. if i remeber correctly the broncos scored on a bomb on their first play, and looked like they would run away with it. then the redskins score on an 80 yard touchdown, followed by scores from 22, 58, 50 and 8 yards. total elapsed time---- only 5 minutes that's unheard of. most games do't even see that many points. in this game, they were scored in a combined one thirs of a quarter, they threw in another touchdown in the fourth to make the domination complete.

At first, it looked like an upset was in the making. Then Denver implodes in the 2nd quarter. 35 uncontested points in one quarter. You got to be kidding me. I don't think I even watched the second half. Kudos to the gutsy performance of Doug Williams.

Doug Williams comes in despite injury and becomes the 1st black quarterback to win the SuperBowl. That alone makes this a memorable Superbowl. Timmy Smith comes out of nowhere to set the super bowl rushing record, and the Redskins score the most points in the 2nd quarter, that any team has scored in 1 quarter of any superbowl.

I liked the 3-D halftime show but that was about it.
