I always wondered if Fran Tarkenton were The Vikings QB, instead of "Injun" Joe Kapp if The Vikings would've had a better fate in this game. While Kapp was incredibly tough, he didn't have near the talent of Fran Tarkenton. However, after watching this game it's hard to imagine it would've made a difference. In my opinion, this was the 1 (out of 4) Super Bowl The Vikings should've won. They went into the game as 12 1/2 point favorites.

The game itself, was pretty dull. 3 Jan Stenerud FG's gave The Chiefs a 9-0 lead. After the 3rd FG, on the insuing kickoff, Vikings return man, Charlie West fumbled the return and recovered by Remi Prudhomme on The Viking 11 yard line. With it 3rd and goal on the 5 yard line, Coach Hank Stram called for the, ever famous, "65 Toss Power Trap" in which Chiefs RB, Mike Garrett sidestepped his way into the endzone for a TD and a 16-0 Chiefs lead.

On The Vikings 1st possession of the 2nd half they attempted to make a game of it, when "Injun" Joe Kapp led The Vikings down the field on a 69 yard TD drive in 10 plays. Vikings RB, Dave Osborn ended the drive with a 4 yard TD run, and cut Kansas City's lead to 9 points, at 16-7. The Vikings would get no closer, however as The Chiefs took the insuing kickoff 82 yards in only 6 plays. The two key plays in the drive were a reverse to RB Frank Pitts for 7 yards on 3rd and 7. And on the very next play, on a quick out pass to WR Otis Taylor, he broke free of a tackle and went down the sideline for a 46 yard TD pass from QB Len Dawson and a 23-7 Chiefs lead.

Although "Injun" Joe Kapp was brave and attempted to lead The Vikings back, two 4th quarter interceptions ended all hope of a Vikings comeback.

Again, another questionable MVP award was given to Chiefs QB, Len Dawson. Dawson completed 12-17 passes for only 142 yards 1TD and 1INT. In my opinion, the game's MVP should've went to Chiefs WR Otis Taylor who caught 6 passes for 81 yards and the TD that iced the game for The Chiefs. It could've even been given to Chiefs, safety, Johnny Robinson, who wasn't supposed to play but had a fumble recovery and an interception.

Hank Stram coached like a genius that game. Although I was rooting for Engine Joe Kapp and the purple gang.

In retrospect, it really was a stinker of a game. But it was the first Super Bowl I ever watched. I really wanted Joe Kapp and the Vikings to win, but the Chiefs took them out of the game quite early. Otis Taylor's TD was spectacular. Hank Stram outcoached Bud Grant, and gave us great sound bites throughout.

Losing to an "inferior" AFL team the previous year was bad enough, but how do you think the NFL felt when the Vikes lost to a AFL team that finished second in it's own division? That's right, if the AFL hadn't decided to adopt a 4-team playoff for the hell of it in its final year of existence the Chiefs never would've even been playing in the postseason. It is they, not the 1980 Raiders, who are the first "wild card" team to win a title. Oh yeah, the game. Not much to say except for the Hank Stram clips I'm sure you've all seen.

A classic! I met players for KC many years later. KC was extremely confident. All the Vikings ever did was run off-tackle slants. KC was confident that the KC team could run rings around Minnesota, and the word became flesh.

This is on Sports Illustrated's Top 10 Super Bowls list (that predates the Patriots games, though). I'm not sure why.

Kansas City's only Superbowl victory. Not to mention, a true-underdog story as Minnesota was the clear favorite heading into the game. Let's just look at some the MVPs: Len Dawson and Hank Stram 'nough said
