This vile criminal should never have been released... but Obama should have bombed Scotland??? http://tiny.cc/MNEjy http://tiny.cc/qhkKd UPDATE:It seems the Scots may have been scammed by lying doctors who were paid to say the prisoner was near death.

Some see this as a fantastic opportunity to play political pin the tail on the donkey, but I'll only say a quick couple of things on the whole mess... there is a part of me that I'm maybe not so proud of that hopes that this cancer takes a while to kill this jackass and is really fuckin' painful in doing so. Aside from that, the hero's welcome is a fantastic reminder of who our enemies are...

During my time in politics I had occasion to twice meet one of the victims of this atrocity. Bernt Carlsson, who at the time of his death was the UN commissioner to Namibia, was a deceptively serious man with a great sense of humor and a startling intelligence. I certainly cannot claim him as a friend, and barely as an acquaintance, but I have a vivid memory of his dry description of Irish whiskey as being useful for killing insects, meanwhile ordering a akvavit. The description under this item is not entirely correct. Megrahi was one of two people tried for this crime, the other, Lamin Khalifah Fhimah, was found not guilty. What the provisions of Scottish law are for compassionate release I do not know, although I'm aware that there are some definate quirks in it, and it is not identical with the law in the rest of the UK.What troubles, but does not surprise me, is the welcome this mope received in Tripoli. Given that Libya paid 8 million dollars to the family of each victim as compensation and "accepting the responsibility for the actions of its officials" it is despicable that the convicted orchestrator of this attack is feted as a hero. While I'm personally disgusted, this is pretty much business as usual in Libya.

I'm all for forgiveness, but that doesn't mean I think this guy should have been released from prison. The early release of a prisoner who is dying might not bother me for some crimes, but it doesn't seem right for a man who is a mass murderer and terrorist to be given that privilege.

Classic age-gap here. If you're old enough to remember the Lockerbie tragedy it will register on the scale. If not, it's really just another contemporary historical footnote.Without investigating much into Scottish law (something I know nothing about) I can say this isn't really a high point for Scot law. . .but laws of other nations are that- their laws. . .but the real infuriating thing is the hero's welcome this dirtbag received. Will assume (always a dangerous verb) that this will be a sticking point in foreign affairs between a few western nations and Libya. It should rank higher- but it won't. . .

Aside from the direct insult and unforgettable pain this terrorist's release conveys to and renews in the families of the victims, this indicates the newfound respect with which the US is held now that Obama is in command of our foreign policy. For the Obama administration to be completely tone deaf about the effect of the public release of this mass murderer, and the opportunity for the hero's welcome he received, having apparently done nothing or nothing effective to prevent it, I shudder to think of the leadership on foreign policy yet to come. Jimmy Carter would have found a way to prevent a national insult of this magnitude if it meant laying his own body down on the tarmac to prevent such a travesty. It looks to me like Obama barely lifted a finger. Please tell me I'm being harsh on him and tell me how he moved heaven and earth to stop this injustice.
