W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) often wished to consider himself one of the best second-rate writers of his day. In terms of his craft a number of Maugham’s main narrative characters exist as “also rans” to the top-notch geniuses dressed in the guise of the artist in whom Maugham consumes his prose. Amongst Maugham’s output are Of Human Bondage, The Moon and Sixpence, and Cakes and Ale. It is Maugham’s understand of human relationships that sustain the popularity of his writing.
