(My apologies for any bad spelling)

I love the Iams Company. There are a lot of people here who have no idea what their talking about, especially with by-products! Yes, some by-products are not safe or cleaned for that matter but not all by-products are created equal! The By-Products (Which contain high quality protein) used by the Iams Company (Which produces Eukanuba as their premium brand) always uses clean, cut chicken cartelidge and intestins! They do not use BEAKS, FEATHERS or any other un-usable source in their nutrition.

I personally believe that their are few brands that compare to the quality in Eukanuba!! And as for IAMS, they shouldn't be degraded in a grocery store! IAMS & Eukanuba has CHICKEN or LAMB as their 1st ingredient in every formula and all those other brands which are in grocery stores NEVER have CHICKEN or LAMB as their 1st ingredient! Its usually Ground Yellow Corn. And that goes for Purina, Kibbles n'Bits, Pedagree & every other brand out there!

High quality Chicken/Lamb based Proteins, Omega 6-3 & vitamins & minerals should be listed on every dog food formula. Also, Denta-Defense (Micro-Coating which is used to remove tartar) used in ALL Eukanuba brands is also important. Its proven formula i believe is super important as well.

I would recommend any IAMS/Eukanuba brand to anybody who truly loves their pet!

My fiance and I were arguing about dog food the other night. I thought I would check out what other people were saying. Just as I thought, like my fiance, there are a lot of other people out there with too much time on their hands.

I have had my Boxer/German Short Hair on Iams, in the green bag, for 9 years now. His metabalsm is great and he eats two bowls a day. His coat is always admired by other dog owners. He is full of energy and still acts like he is a pup. I have never had him in the vet for any major health problems. He poops solid every time unless he is stressed. He seems to follow my mood swings. Perhaps your dogs are doing the same. Maybe your dogs are having reactions to food not because it is bad food, but because the owner is a neurotic, high strung know it all. Christ! Dogs eat other dog's and cat's poop. Is there any nutritional value in poop? If there is, maybe humans are missing the boat? Poop is all by-product! My sister's dog eats horse poop and he is 11 years old. You know what's in horse poop? Grass by-product! Dog's eat cow poop. You know whats in cow poop? Grain by-product!

Growing up my father fed all of our dogs food from the local feed store. It was supposed to be the worst dog food out there. Filled with all sorts of fillers, people would hang my father now days for feeding dogs such food. But, you know what? We never had a dog that lived less than 12 years. They were healthy and saw the vet maybe once a year for check ups. Never had any coat problems or weight problems.

Feed dogs whatever the hell you want to feed them. Just don't judge, tell me I am brain washed, or uneducated based on my choice of dog food. Get a grip and find something better to do!

Now, if you don't mind, I need to go solve the energy crisis. Peace out and long live dogs raised on crappy food!

Wow, the below quote is EXACTLY what my 3 Goldens are going thru now! :

"Second, their skin and coats. My dogs have never been scratchy, but their skin became so dry on this food that they were constantly itching. It got so bad that I became convinced they had fleas, but they didn't. This food completely dried out their skin, and their fur became dry and was falling out MUCH more than normal."

I have just switched to another brand with no wheat, corn, or soy. I had eliminated all other causes of the scratching, and only the food/diet was left. I think the new Iames formula with "prebiotics" in 48 pound bags was the start of my problem.

I hope more people post here with their results.

Iams has been an excellent food for my Golden. They base their formulas on research not hype. Many bad reviews are from people with an agenda...not folks that actually used the food. Iam's made my Golden's metabalism much heatlthier.  He was less hungery throughout the day (less begging) and his weight became healthier.  He loves the stuff.  His coat and skin improved with Iams.  Iams is supposed to be less quality compared the the other food made by Iams, Eukanuba...but I see little if any difference in the ingredients.  I suggest people look up the Iam's site...it is interesting to learn about their research and the changes made to their formulas because of it.  They don't mistreat dogs or cats.....

Thanks for the great review. I wanted to give a little more background on The Iams Company and the most common questions we get:

Why do you use corn in your products?

Corn is an excellent carbohydrate source. The entire corn kernel, finely ground and chopped, makes up ground corn or corn meal. The outside covering of the corn kernel, the fiber portion, is called corn bran. Corn grits are the starch or carbohydrate part of the corn kernel. And corn gluten is the protein portion of the corn kernel.

We use high-quality corn that is finely ground (breaking up the outside bran covering), and cooked. When prepared in our manufacturing facilities, corn is highly digestible and provides dogs and cats with high-quality carbohydrates for essential energy.

What are the facts on by-products?

Chicken by-product meal may include stuff that people have a cultural aversion to eating; but that doesn't make it a bad source of protein. It is an excellent and complete source of protein because it provides each of the amino acids that are essential to good nutrition for dogs and cats.

Not every chicken by-product meal is as good as ours. Our chicken by-product meal is muscle and internal organs (including intestines) that have been cleaned, dried, cooked, and ground.

In addition to the superior quality specifications we set for our suppliers, we take additional steps to ensure our chicken by-product meal is the best. We put it through a proprietary screening process to further improve its protein quality. This quality assurance process costs more, but it's part of what makes our chicken by-product meal different.

If you look at how wolves and lions eat in the wild, one of the first things they eat after they've killed their supper is the underbelly of the animal. We may think it's gross to eat intestines, but these ancestors of the dog relish that part of their dinner.

Do you do any type of animal research?

Unfortunately, there is highly inaccurate and misleading information circulating on the Internet regarding our feeding studies. We are passionate about cats and dogs, with a deep commitment to their health and welfare.

Please review the links provided to get the facts on animal testing:

Can you tell me more about the science behind your formulas?

Our nutritional philosophy is based upon fundamental and unique scientific research in protein, fiber, carbohydrate, and fat nutrition that has resulted in numerous nutritional breakthroughs. We are a leader in nutritional research. Our research is published and presented at scientific and veterinary medicine forums around the world, and we have pledged to continue to learn additional nutritional truths to further enhance the well-being of dogs and cats.

We make our decisions based on the well-being of dogs and cats and we continue to develop and offer products that truly enhance this well-being. For us at Iams, cutting edge research and breakthrough products are a top priority.

The ingredients we use are tailored to the nutritional needs of dogs and cats. We use only high-quality animal protein sources in our formulations. We don’t use artificial flavorings, colorings, or other questionable fillers. Our formulas are complete and balanced to meet the specific life stage and lifestyle nutritional needs of your pet.

You can be confident that Iams scientists will provide the technology to develop new diets, and to continuously improve existing products that ensure optimal nutrition for dogs and cats.

There seems to be a lot of people placing comments here about how "IAMS is a great food you idiots are brainwashed to think otherwise blah blah blah..." so I'll say right now that this review is not based on what's on the label (ingredients, etc...), it's based on my own experience with the food. I bought it blindly on a recommendation from my vet, me being clueless at the time about dog food, and that is the last time I ever trust my vet on this issue. I'll state for the record that I'm not sure how anyone can truly feel that a corn-based food is equal to or even better for dogs than a meat-based food. That conclusion that some people have come to really has me puzzled. It seems like a no-brainer to me, but to each their own.

First, the taste. There was very little I could do to convince my dogs to eat this food. They wouldn't even touch it without something extra in it. I have never in my life mixed anything into my dogs food to get them to eat, but with IAMS, it was the only way they would eat it. They would literally go 4-5 days without touching it, becoming increasingly lethargic but still choosing not to eat it. Even with things added, like rice, carrots, chicken broth, etc, they would only eat it for a few days before refusing to touch it again. One of my dogs will eat almost anything, but she hated the taste of IAMS. They were also throwing up about once a week on this food, something that was completely out of the ordinary for them.

Second, their skin and coats. My dogs have never been scratchy, but their skin became so dry on this food that they were constantly itching. It got so bad that I became convinced they had fleas, but they didn't. This food completely dried out their skin, and their fur became dry and was falling out MUCH more than normal. One of my dogs developed such terrible dandruff that the vet commented on its severity. How do I know this was all caused/aggravated by IAMS? It all *completely* disappeared within a month of switching to Orijen. Now, you wouldn't be able to find a single flake on her solid-black coat if you tried. Both of their fur soon regained it's softness and shine, and they stopped their constant itching. Their skin and coats couldn't be healthier now.

Third, their energy level. My dogs were adolescents at the time they were on IAMS, usually the most energetic stage in a dog's life, but they had very little energy. The fact that they hardly ever ate definitely contributed to that, but even when I did manage to get them to eat it, they were lethargic. They hardly ever even wanted to play. Once again, their energy level shot through the roof very soon after I switched foods, and has never gone back down. Maybe that's an incredible coincidence, or maybe it was the IAMS.

Fourth, their stools. Their stools on this food were very large and smelly, and they went THREE times a day on average (when they actually ate the stuff). Upon switching foods, that went down to ONCE a day on average, and their stools were smaller, firmer, much less smelly.

Overall, I can't think of anything positive to say about this food, other than "it's inexpensive." However, it's inexpensive for a very good reason: it's garbage. I wouldn't feed my dogs this food if someone gave me a free lifetime supply. You couldn't pay me to put my dogs through that again.

I understand that a lot of the "great" dog foods are a little too expensive for some (Orijen, EVO, Wellness, etc.), but there are a lot of other "very good" dog foods that are MUCH better than IAMS, but are equal to, or only a few dollars more, in price. There is no reason I can think of to feed this terrible food when there's better food out there for the same price.

My dog is a Jug 4 months old. I bought the Iams wet food at my local Walmart. The dog would not even touch the food. Only if he is very hungry he will finish it. I dont know what it could be because he is fine with other wet foods.

Well, I don't believe anything that PETA has to say--they have been classified as a terrorist organization! I don't agree with cruelty to animals--I know that shocking and horrible things go on in this world. I don't know whether or not all the hype about Iams being cruel to their animals is true or not, but I do know that I don't like this food. I have two Jack Russells and two cats. I fed Iams to my animals for years, and two of them developed fairly serious skin and weight problems, and only did moderately well. I did try Beneful for the dogs for a short time, and my dogs did better on that than they did on this food. Now I have switched them all to Natural Balance, and I have never seen healthier happier animals! Their skin and weight problems are gone, and they are playful and full of energy. They only picked at their Iams, but they gobble their Natural Balance. I wouldn't recommend this food if you can afford something better and more wholesome (read the ingredients on the bag!), but it is better than some of the foods available in the supermarket.

Had my dogs on Iams for years one of them did o.k. till she died of cancer at 14 (unrelated, I'm sure). The other had a horrible skin and coat. I always blamed it on seasonal allergies, which in part it was, but when I switched to Royal Canin the improvement was immediate. This was several years ago, I am now more informed of dog food then I was then and I am sorry that my poor dog had to suffer as long as she did. She still is bothered by seasonal allergies, but I am glad that her food is no longer a contribution to her poor health. I would not recommened this food to anyone. Low meat content, and low quality ingredients make it a poor choice for dogs.

My dog used to eat IAMS food, but then one day just quit eating it altogether for no explainable reason.  I was not aware that they changed the formula, so that might have had something to do with it, but I guess it says something that my dog (who will eat almost anything else he can get ahold of) would rather go hungry.  I switched his food (and have actually never found another food he won't eat) and he's been fine ever since.

let me ask all u guys against the product iams. remember long before dogs;there were wolves;which are dogs' ancestors. they ate animals even with diseases and bacteria and so on forth.they made it through;like us they have an immune system to fight off.so you cant tell me these little "bad ingredients" are going to kill a dog.We eat so much junk with by the way, fillers.Do we die from it? No.It all depends on the dog's immune and what its able to handle. There's been recalls on these expensive brands;there's always gonna be recalls no matter what. And on that case of corn gluten;dont blame the dog foods BLAME China for trying to kill our dogs;and what bout led that was found in children's toys from China. If usa was smart as we thought it was;itd wouldnt depend on other countries for inports and exports.& so at that iams isnt as bad as you put it out to be.Even my dad's dog lived 15 years from KIbbles n bits which by the way has by far the worst ingredients compared to what u guys are saying.Iams may have the by product but remember wolves survived from that;and was practically all they ate.Its in dogs' blood to survive, remember that.

I give this food one star because many of Iams foods have By-Products which have NO nutritional Value for animals. A by-product is not the meat it is the beak, feet, undevolped eggs of an animal. There is also too much grain in many of thier foods which are basically just fillers, your animal cannot digest that much grain, and you the consumer will be feeding your animal much more grain then they need to eat. Which down the line can cause digestion issuse's, a hard stool (the stool should be the consistancy of a Marshmello) Pica (when your animal eats and swallows rocks, sticks, sting, shoes, and more non-eadible items) a shorter life, and more.

Where's the Beef we all heard that from Clara Peller (sp) from the famous Wendy's commercials so goes it with Iams. Lots of filler corn and little meat esp as the first ingredient. Bottom line is you might as well let your kids eat twinkies and fast food you would be doing them the same service as you would Man's best friend eating this Bad Choice.

Wild dogs, wolves, and all animals thrive on things like heads, feet, intestines and all parts of plants. In fact, many animals (and other societies) go right for these parts. It's easy to equate our westernized human standards to what all animals should be consuming - but, of course, has nothing to do what us or our pets need to thrive.

This is a decent food.  My dog has been pretty lethargic on it, which is totally out of character.  She hasn't gotten any diarrhea or vomiting from it however.  My dog hates kibble but liked Iams okay; she wasnt crazy for it or anything.  As far as a dog food you can pick up at Wal-Mart Iams is the better of the commercial varieties.  I am no longer going to feed my dog Iams because of her lethargy.

Iams is not bad for the price. It seems to be fairly comparable to other similiar quality foods. Iams does not torture animals. I have a friend that works at Iams headquarters. The animals get played with daily. The dogs have a large grassy play area and get to go out daily. She would not work for them if they were doing anything cruel. Beware PETA, they are currently interfering at a shelter a few counties away from me. They're idea of 'helping' the animals is to euthanize anything there immediatly.

I am or was new to owning a pet on my own. I am a college student, and my brother had to go off to grad school where he couldnt have pets so I took his dog (a springer spaniel) for him. He had fed the dog many foods apparently including Iams. In the transitioning process to going to grad school he was short on money and started feeding his dog kibbles and bits. He had no knowledge of pet food whatsoever, and neither did I taking on the dog. Feeding him kibbles and bits, the dog gradually started getting skin and coat problems, and I took him into the vet. The vet gave him suppliments and handed me a flyer to look for dog food with. I made a compromise for Iams since I am on a college budget. The dog got a little better for awhile, but then developed ear infections, and now has a very bad skin problem in which he is constantly scratching and bitting at his paws. I did extensive research on different foods and today switched to Innova EVO. I will gradually make the change to make it easier on him. I might should have tried regular Innova first, which has less protein, but I will see how this works. Bottom line: Iams is probably better than Kibbles and Bits, but definently not good overall.

My dog has been on Iams for a year and a half or more and I have seen no problems with it. My dog looks and acts healthy. But just cause it works for on dog doesn't mean it will work for every dog, some dogs are more sensitive than others. Funny how people don't think about that. The best thing to do is just keep trying different kinds until your dog has little or no problems. But keep in mind that switching your dogs food all the time does more harm than good!

I know that Iams is now made by Procter and Gamble. I know that is now available in grocery stores and I know there are ingredients that make people shudder, but people if you find a food your dog does well on, then feed it. My dogs have been on Iams for several years. I have fed other brands and the companies continue to change the ingredients or aren't consistant with the ingredients and problems arise. This is the brand I have fed the longest with the fewest problems. If your dog doesnt do well on Iams try something else. I think we do more harm by constantly switching brands on what other people say.

They all are fed IAMS, and are very healthy animals. As for PETA ... Does Peta REALLY want to make a difference to inhumane treatment of animals? Then they should take their energy down to the nearest SPCA or Humane Society and offer time, money. food, homes ... all that time and energy spent could go to good use in solving a horrendous problem ithat occurs EVERY DAY in our society....

Wow, alot of propaganda in these comments. I dont listen to a thing PETA has to say, they dont want any of us to own dogs or any animal and they lie in their attempt to gain their objective, I wont be manipulated like that. www.iamstruth.com how anyone and come to a conclusion about a matter without hearing both sides of an arguement I have no idea. Now, Iams.....they didnt cheapen they're food nor look for a way to include more fillers. This is all propaganda jargon and not true. Iams did studies on the gycemic index (thats how fast an ingredient turns to glucose and raises blood sugar) and once they had the results of this very good study they changed their formulas to reflect what the study told them, that foods that cause less of a spike in blood sugar are better and healthier for dogs...so they added sorghum to their foods. Sorghum is not a filler it is a grain used in many parts of the world, nothing wrong with it at all and it has less of an effect on blood sugar than other more popular grains....this is what they changed and it happened to be changed around the same time the company was sold which was just when it was done and nothing more. I am currently testing Iams chunks on my 5 dogs for the next 2 weeks and then Ill decide if I want to change my rating. I would caution people to listen to rumors though, there are many of them running around online and elsewhere and they take on a life of their own.

The best connection I've found on the PETA site would be akin to claiming that because someone worked for HUD they were connected to the military. If you examine the P&G corporate homepage, you'll find a few interesting facts: 1) The Humane Society of the US awarded the 1999 & 2001 Humane Award for Corporate Champions to recognize P&G's longstanding financial and scientific commitment to advancing alternatives to animal testing 2) Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing has recognized P&G for outstanding contributions in finding alternatives in product development and safety evaluations 3)P&G has been rated as one of the top 5 corporate citizens for all 5 years for which Business Ethics magazine produced the ratings. Personally, I'd trust the Humane Society over PETA any day. As for the price, yes, its higher, but typically Iams, Eukanuba, and Science Diet are much higher in nutritional value than other brands, so you need to feed your pet less. While I use a prescription Science Diet for my cat, I've found that the cost per day is not significantly different than what it would be if I fed the recommended amount of Whiskas, 9 Lives, or some other brand.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Iams dog food just because it is now sold in the grocery stores and not just exclusively at pet stores and vet offices....that is almost like saying all shampoos that are sold at discount stores suck because a beautician doesn't sell it...what is important in a dog food is that your dog enjoys the food and he/she gets nutrition from it. Besides, if you buy food exclusively from your vet...you can bet it will cost 3 times as much...the reason I give IAMS a 3 and not a 5 is because my chihuahua doesn't care for it...

Iams used to be a good quality food. Emphasis on used to be. Now that it has been bought out, the quality has gone down hill. I think a lesson should be that if it's available at your local grocer then stay away.

My uncle is a breeder and he always recommends Iams. My dog eats Iams and she's in great shape. She loves the food.

In reference to BigDogDad, A couple of years ago Iams was bought out by Proctor & Gamble. The ingredients were not change considerably for the worse, however, less effort is going into the production of Iams. Eukanuba is Iam's Premium brand. It has more nutrients, as well as double the meat. If you are a dedicated Iam's user, I would suggest trying to pay the extra cost for the Eukanuba. I work with Eukanuba/Iams represenatives, and they themselves have complimented Canidae on their ingredients, so thats what I stick to. If shoppping in a grocery store, Iams is probably the best choice.

I've raised two healthy dogs on this stuff and they seem to really enjoy the taste too. It's in the pricer range but getting better now that it's available outside the vet's office and specialty stores. You can now get coupons occasionally too. Most importantly, you can rely on the quality of the ingredients.
