The National Liberation Army is a very dangerous paramilitary group in Colombia who have led a Civil War for the past couple of decades there. The struggle in this country has been between the government and this group of communist narco-traffickers who seek to establish a leftist state in Colombia. The well-being of Colombia is very critical to the well-being of the United States. Currently, the government in that country is weak. Our country is being flooded with drugs from this country because it is difficult to enforce the laws here or to even determine what government is the legitimate force here. The ELN controls moderately large parts of the Colombian countryside. The government only controls pockets of the country. If the ELN fully takes control of the country, then we would have a mess in our hands. The U.S. will have communist drug traffickers running a country in our own backyard. In this situation, we have to pick the lesser of the two evils and that is the government because they are the ones who will maintain a semblance of unity in this country. In parts of Colombia, a state of anarchy has existed for a long time. We have neglected this for too long; if the narco groups take over in Colombia today, the same circumstances will spread to the rest of the region, something that we cannot allow. South America as a whole is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Allowing Marxists control of the government could have horrible effects on the regional economy and maybe even ours. Weakening the ELN is definitely in the U.S.'s best interests.
