Unlike the FMLN or other Latin American revolutionary groups, they deliberately target civilians. That makes them terrorists. They are also a very doctrinaire Maoist group, uncharacteristic of other Latin American radical groups. Unfortunately, they must have some basis of support among the poor in the rural areas, or they would not have survived this long.

I think these guys are in that elite catagory of assholes in the world.

This is as vicious, loathsome group of Maoists that has existed in history rating next to Pol Pot's Khymer Rouge.

So, let's see -- the country will be made a better place if we just kidnap enough children and train them to be terrorists, murder enough tourists, politicians, and anyone else we feel like, and worship our leader as a Maoist god! Seems obvious enough to me....

I sympathised with their aims, but they were/are a vicious bunch who committed many brutal murders including decapitating German backpackers.
