IF (and I mean if) you are rating Al Qaeda on the basis of its quality as a terrorist organization it is certainly #1. Think about it. 9/11 was the most significant day in the history of terrorism. It brought the world's most powerful nation to a temporary standstill and created images that will seen in history books well over 100 years from now. Al Qaeda has fundamentally changed the course of history. Personally, I think it has played a part in hastening the downfall of the Middle East as we know it and speeding up the westernization of that part of the world, but only time will tell. What cannot be questioned, however, is that it was probably the most successful terrorist strike in history. Thousands died. International alliances were formed, broken and tested. Politicians were defined and the world will never be the way it was before September 2001.

Also the demographics of Middle Eastern countries is such that these countries have a larger proportion of young people than the West. So...what have you got? Alot of young people with plenty of money and time and no jobs. Then you give them something to be pissed off at, for example funding the Israeli government, who then mistreat the Palestinians. As well as stationing troops in Saudi Arabia during the first gulf war. If you want to stop these people, why don't you stand up for the Palestinians more? Is it "al-Qaeda" or "al-Qaida"? I'm still confused about that. I'm actually quite surprised that so far, they have a rating on this website of 1.0.
