Charles Chaplin gave his all in pictures and he changed them forever. He opened a new door for comedians by proving that comedy could be just as good as drama. I highly recomend Charlie Chaplin films to anyone who wishes to see true entertainment and comedy. He brings you to tears in "The Kid" and fills your heart with smiles in "The Gold Rush". "City Lights" was by far his best film with the best ending in cinematic history. His last feature made in America "Limelight" which Chaplin made in his sixties is also a cinematic classic. I also recomend this film for the seen where Chaplin and Buster Keaton perform on stage together-brilliant and touching, not to mention funny. Charles Chaplin was the funniest man who ever lived, but don't take my word for it see for yourself. I also recomend: "Modern Times", and Chaplin's first talkie "The Great Dictator" a satire on Adolf Hitler. Keep in mind that this film was made when Hitler was in power and at that time the most dangerous man alive. People cheered and cried as they watched this comedic man step up to someone so evil and hatefilled. And there's rumor that Hitler may have liked the film himself. Chaplin was an artist and a Genious, if only America hadn't turned on him.

It's a treat to sit back and watch Chaplin's films, especially Modern Times. A comedy legend he is, indeed!

Gold Rush, City Lights, Modern Times, Great Dictator, Monsier Verdox and Limelight are all Oscar worth performances. He also is a great composer and has had number one hits with Smile, Terry's Theme from Limelight and This is My Song

All around great. Relied on great physical humor to bring laughter in an era without sound in pictures.

Not only did this man never do stand up comedy, I don't think he ever starred in a talkie. I wonder if Dan Rather will be reviewed in the stand up section.

He was the first truly great movie comedian. He had a style that none of his many imitators could quite capture. He was multi-talented. He directed and even wrote the musical scores for many of his films! My favorite movies of his are "The Kid" (1921) "City Lights"(1931) and any of the films he was in with Mabel Normand.

Chaplin gets five stars, but as a movie comedian. He is not and never was a standup comedian.

Not fair to put im in the stand-up category. But it was his use of pathos in combination with slapstick that invented the modern comedy. The sheer optimism of his character when facing incredible odds or dealing with a breaking heart was a stroke of genius. Loveable yet defiant.

I?ve mostly just seen clips of different bits done by Chaplin. Unlike prophets, comedians are sometimes best appreciated in their own time I think. While I could see that this man was talented and had the added fortune of being very appreciated in his life and career, I really did not get the humor. Part of that opinion is no doubt due to the fact that his stage persona was imitated to death over the past 80 or so years. I do feel that one of his best works was his send up of Hitler in ?The Great Dictator?. And, I don?t have to guess how I arrived at that conclusion since I KNOW it is based on the fact that I grew up and developed my sense of humor during the very cynical 60?s and 70?s.
