I would give him 4 stars, but 5 is to counterweight the bad comments. GOOD. I think Sharon is a better leader than anyone else I see on Israeli political arena. He is the only one who took a hard-line stance on terrorism and issues with PA. BAD. Going to Temple Mount was a mistake, also his inability to make any drastic choices like assasianating arafat is not a good thing. I understand he was pressured by US. But Arafat could have died of natural causes. For Israeli intelligence it is a piece of cake.

Sharon hasn't delivered for the Israeli state. At first, I was kind of optimistic about him, my view was that Sharon would make peace just like Nixon did with China and the Russians. My verdict is that Sharon is politically impotent. He has gotten caught in the long running debate about Israeli national identity versus Jewish identity. The basic question that needs to be answered is whether Israel wants to remain a Jewish state or does it want to become just an Israeli national state that is not exclusively Jewish. Being that there will be more Arabs than Jews in Israel by 2013, I would say that it would be wise for the Jews to make a negotiated peace with the Palestinians. If they don't, the world will view them as an apartheid state, making relations in the overall region even worse. Sharon is a fossil, he is caught between the extremist elements of the right wing Likud party and the more moderate elements of Israel's political spectrum that wants to make peace. Simply put, building a Berlin Wall around Gaza and the West Bank is not a long term solution. I acknowledge that it has lowered terrorism in Israel proper, but in the long term, it doesn't solve any problems. As opposed, the Palestinians will only become more and more resentful. Their economy and way of life are being destroyed by Israeli policies. Plus the Israeli national economy, once seen as the future Singapore of the Middle East, is now and has been in the doldrums since Sharon took office in 2001. Taxes are high and the investment climate is horrible in Israel, being that political stability is hard to find these days. In the final analysis, we can argue all we want about national identity, but the truth is that the Jews and the Arabs are going to have to live with each other. Most Israelis acknowledge this and they have to wise up and elect leadership that won't have to rely on political support from the fringe elements of public life.

He has agreed to dismantle the illegal settlements and yet openly advertises for contractors to build these settlements in Israeli newspapers. His racism is especially virulent, and he is probably the one person in the whole conflict who is the LEAST interested in peace with the Palestinians. He wants them to just leave and go somewhere else, and if they refuse to comply then they must be shot and beaten and humiliated daily until they leave. The fact that his virulent hatred is the product of religious fanaticism makes this a tragedy of epic proportions. The existence of men like this makes me weep for humanity, for we will never be enlightened as long as we produce psychopathic killers like this one. I cannot for the life of me understand how this man won an election! All he's done since he came to power is cause trouble. He destroys refugee camps, the airports, the docks. Maybe if Ariel didn't set out to kill palestinian millitary/police they'd have an easier time arresting people! Anyone care to guess how much longer Ariel Sharon is going to act like an imbicile? And to all the people giving Ariel Sharon 4 or 5 and talking about God, haven't you people heard of "Love thy neighbour"!?

Ariel Sharon is the man with the worst job in the world. He is supposed to make peace in an area that has never known peace in the history of the world. The problem is that neither side wants peace, both sides would prefer the elimination of the other. The bible says that we are to "pray for the peace of Jerusalem", and I do. I also pray daily for wisdom for Ariel Sharon, but without God's intervention I don't see how there can be peace.

This is clearly the time of the parable of the fig tree whereby the nation of Israel is torn between two leaders, one good fig and one bad fig. I wish to remind all who can read - to read with understanding what the lord God of Israel has planned in our immediate future, and to stay working in the field when the rest of the world whores after the spurious messiah who will arrive as nations close in around Israel. Here is a man who, like Ehud Barak, is a decorated soldier and one of Israel's better-known public figures. Like Barak, he is very sensitive to the needs of Israel's concerns, most notably a strong sense of security. He is a strong believer in parliamentary democracy, provided it suits Likud's and the right-wing wacko's agenda (not unlike that of the late Meir Kahane and Baruch Goldstein, the fanatical American-born Israeli nationalists whose dream of Eretz Yisra'el would exclude all who weren't Orthodox Israelis). Lest we forget, this is the same man who helped launch Israel's June 1982 invasion of Lebanon to eliminate the PLO and set up an Israeli buffer zone to protect Israeli settlements in southern Lebanon (they were later forcibly evacuated) and in the Golan Heights, which was never Israeli or Palestinian territory to begin with---it belonged to Syria prior to 1973. Sharon's reasons were for Israel's protection, to be sure, but to defend one's country and massacre innocent Palestinian, Druze, and Lebanese civilians in Israeli internment camps (which helped launch the intifadeh and give international credibility to the PLO) is no worse than Palestinian bombs going off in Ramallah or Hebron. War knows no good, but for a decorated veteran such as Sharon to represent his country shows little respect towards those who view the peace process to be settled with ballots rather than bullets. Sharon seems to speak for the obnoxious settlers (ironically, many of whom are American-born) who feel that wherever an Israeli sets foot, there (s)he will stay forever, often at the sacrifice of Palestinian families who are forced to leave for the semi-security of Jordan or to Israel proper. Unlike Barak, Sharon is not known for being exceptionally erudite or intellectual. His disdain for Barak's approach to the peace process and for Israeli doves in society and in the Knesset is well-known in international circles and his victory coalition only sent a hard-line message to the PLO: "You had it easy, but now you answer to the fist and the gun. Talk is a waste of time! Israel must protect itself from you terrorists who still want to destroy us! The peace process will only be on our terms, and our terms only! If you don't like it, tough!" Is this the sort of person the world wants to see directing the tone of the peace process? Me thinks not. If I were an Israeli, I would be embarrassed by the determination of this man who wants to keep forging the plowshare into the Uzi. Oy Vey!

I believe that Ariel Sharon is the right man for Israel in these difficult days. He will stand up for Israel and will hopefully not give up any more land to the arabs. There is no no need for another arab state run by a dictator in the region.
