I can't say I was always crazy about watching his fights;he was way too defensive-crazy for me.But that's just me..I still gotta give him the highest rating...He didn't duck anybody and he gave everybody fits.

Pernell Whitaker is one of the best-EVER. This man was a lighting quick version of Roy Jones Jr. without the power or the ducking of opponents. Remember now before people started noticing him he fought latino legend Jose Luis Ramirez (twice) losing the first in a bizzare decision he should of won (which is the case for all his big fights) and won the second one back in the states. Ramirez fought Camacho, and Chavez and has a career record of 102-9. Whitaker fought the immortal Julio Cesar Chavez to a draw which would of been a 9-3 round decision in any coherent judges mind. But he fought on landing a big fight with Oscar De La Hoya which he floored DeLa Hoya in the 6th but lost a very ugly fight. What would of been by all accounts the biggest heart performance next to Ali's broken jaw against Ken Norton was what he did against Felix Trinidad. The Younger Tito blitzed him all through the fight but Whitaker showed the heart to make it respectable and floor tito in the 7th. Of all Welters i rank him 2 behind Sugar Ray and Oscar De La Hoya.

sure he was fast, great skills and teq, and he did win titles in 4 divisions. but GOOD GOD! what a whiner! he whines so much, he should get paid to shut up. maybe his fights with chavez and DLH were controversial. but he should have been TKOd in his fight with trinidad. and to top it all off, this whining has-been got in trouble twice with drugs. how any1 can hold whitaker in high regard is beyond me...

One of the greatest fighters of all time. Never had great power if any at all, but his skills and defensive wizardry helped him to win world titles in 4 divisions. He was robbed in 2 major bouts, 1 against Julio Chavez and the other against Oscar De La Hoya. He was never whipped in his career, though Trinidad convincingly beat him in a 12 round decision when Sweet Pea was clearly over the hill. Trinidad would have never beaten a prime Sweet Pea. His lame, foul-filled, dull style cost him decisions against Chavez, De La Hoya and Trinidad. Afterwards he repeatedly lost to drugs and alcohol. In both cases he blames everyone but himself. God bless him.

Didn't lose a pro fight until he was 35yrs old against felix trinidad. Overlooked solid chin, phenomenal hand speed, reflexes, footwork and stamina. Great at setting the pace of a fight and by far best ring generalship of anybody that fought in his era. Won many of his fights by wide margins, almost shutting out his opponents. Never hurt very badly due to his remarkable creative defense. hands down a top 10 pound for pound all-time.

I gave Whitaker one star and I'm being generous at that. Yes he had good defensive skills. Did he beat Chavez? Possibly, but the fact that he hit Chavez with two deliberate low blows was completely ignored. Those blows were intentional and devastating and changed the course of the fight. Still Chavez fought on. How can anyone think Whitaker seriously beat Oscar De La Hoya. Whitaker thinks if he can do silly acts that will embarass his opponents he should be awarded the fight. In order to win the fight you have to fight. Bottom line. He does however deserve a five rating as a salesman. After each loss he cried, bitched and moaned and some of the public bought it. He actually thought he deserved the win against Trinadad. Eventually fans lost interest in this boring, whining, infant. I can't bring myself to hate any fighter. But of all the fighters I have seen in my lifetime, I dislike this fraud the most. You are retired and good riddance!!

Usually kinda boring to watch, didn't have much power - however, do you judge fighters on how thrilling they are or how effective they are? Whitaker pretty much fought everybody anywhere near his weight class and just about beat them all. Even won fights he officially didn't (Ramirez & Chavez). Great, great, great defensive fighter. Couldn't be hit. Punched his opponents enough to win his fights pretty decisively. Some similiarities to Roy Jones in their approach - defensive, didn't always look for the knockout, used hand speed. Major difference - Whitaker seeked out great competition. Jones didn't.

Whitaker fought a good crowd of fighters from lightweight to welterweight and he boxed rings round all of them !! The robbery of the century was his loss in 1988 to Ramirez , never seen a worse decision . There's never been a worse decision . Robbed again against the great Julio Cesar Chavez , only got a draw . Everyone could see Pernell had won . And again against DeLaHoya - was that a fair decision . But by then Whitaker was over the hill . Often Whitaker was boring to watch , but like Roy Jones Jr , you can't deny the skill . Immense talent .

He was a whiney, dirty, boring, cry baby who was booed in nearly all of his fights. In Whitaker's last fight he was booed out of the ring on ESPN. That's not the way real legends go out.

One of the smartest and most talented fighters of all time. Incredible reflexes, great footwork and headmovement. He humbled J.C Chavez, one of the best p4p fighters of the 90's and was too slick for De La Hoya even when he was over the hill(yes, Pernell was robbed in both fights). The only fighter to ever beat him decisivly was the dynamite-fisted and naturally bigger Felix Trinidad who still had to go the distance with the faded "Swetpea".

Clearly a very good fighter, but not great. He is not in the same category of most of the others on this list.
