Alright Wavebacker... Let's get real about this. Dawkins has 707 Tackles, 28 INTs, and 12 Fumble Recoveries. Sammy Knight has played one less season than him and has 856 Tackles (+149), 37 INTs (+9), and 13 Fumble Recoveries (+1). The only reason Dawkins has less stats is because Knight has played on worse defenses? Honestly, that is about the weakest excuse I've heard in a long time. It's very easy to reverse your logic. Knight has played on teams with poor defenses, and thus had no one to open up the field for him to make plays, whereas Dawkins did. Besides, Knight did better than Dawkins in 2003 and 2004, years that Knight was on the Dolphins stellar backfield (ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively), essentially blowing your theory out of the water. They are both phenominal safeties that are starting to age and I hold them in similar regards... However, I'm surprised you didn't notice the real difference. Despite playing a season less than Dawkins, Knight has played a game more than him (142 vs. 141). That's because Knight is alot less injury prone than Dawkins. Knight has only missed 2 games his whole career, finishing 8 of his 9 years without missing a game whereas Dawkins has only finished 3 years healthy in a decade. Knight is younger, a better leader, smarter (photographic-memory smart), has less of an injury history, and gets better production. Still think Dawkins is better? You shouldn't... UPDATE: So you've explained the inflated tackle stats for Knight (149 more though?), but you didn't explain why he'd have 9 more INTs. If he's playing for a terrible team like the Saints, teams are going to pass the ball less often, giving him less oppurtunities to pick off the ball. I don't have the kind of time or access to all of the statistics I'd need to figure out the pass plays per interception for each player, but Ibe shocked if Knight's wasn't better. Also, as you said, Knight has played on some bad teams... which easily explains why he hasn't been to as many ProBowls. Safety in particular is a position where fans tend to vote in favor of a guy who's on a successful team more often than on whether or not that guy is actually himself successful. In 2003 the only defensive player of the 13-3 Chiefs to go to the ProBowl was Jerome Woods, who was easily outplayed by other safeties in the AFC. This year, Bob Sanders went because his team was 15-1, not because of what he himself has done. In both years, years where Knight didn't go to the ProBowl, he outperformed both of those players... and Dawkins as well for that matter. Looking at their careers, there is not a single year since Knight has joined that I'd say Dawkins outplayed him. The only year I'd even consider was clear back in 1999 when Dawkins had his career high 4 INTs and Knight had his career low 1... Still Knight had 31 more tackles, which is a huge difference. In fact, there wasn't a single year that Dawkins had more tackles than him.... NOT ONCE! Even this year when Knight was playing for the Chiefs who finished 7th against the run (destroying any notion that no one else can tackle on all of the teams he's been on) he still had more tackles than Dawkins... He's a playmaker whether you admit it or not.

An absolute hammer of a saftey, Watch him flex his guns after a big hit and you'll see he's just a stud player. The reason he doesnt have as many stats as a Sammy Knight is because he's played on good teams that have playmakers that make plays. Dawkins doesnt have to make as many plays as a Knight. Dawkins hits like a Linebacker yet can cover WR's in the nickel backfield. He's a leader as well. ******UPDATE******** Dawkins is one of the best Safeties around. Comparing him to a Sammy Knight is interesting, but Dawkins still surpasses Knight. Sammy Kinight is durable, an admirable trait ( or fortuntate stat) for a Football Player, but Dawkins is the better player, the bigger hitter, the more impact player, the better overall guy. Knight's stats are gaudy in that he's played a lot - on bad teams. Being the leading tackler for the New Orleans Saints, well that's kinda like being the big fish in the little pond. The Saints suck and when you're a Safety for them, you have to make plays because your front seven ahead of you ( who should be making the plays ) suck ! There are you inflated tackle stats. Knight is sooooo great that he's been to the Pro Bowl how many time ????? ONCE. ONCE for the guy who's greater than Brian Dawkins. Knight's lone Pro Bowl appearance was in 2001 - quite some time in the shelf life on a Footbal player. Dawkins? He's been FIVE - count 'em : 1999 , 2002 , 2004, 2005 - FIVE TIMES ! Someone thinks he's a helluva player and he is.

. . .will be 5-stars soon if he strings together 2-3 more seasons. . .potential HOF player. . .smallest guy on the field but hits harder than Ike hit Tina. . .Dawkins is fearless and vicious. . .plays the game the right way. . .

Reminds me of Jack Tatum at his best. Much as I hate to admit it, I think Dawkins is better than Tatum, who I've always regarded as the best at the position.

Brian Dawkins is the most dominating safety I've ever seen. Hits like a linebacker, covers like a corner, and has more than 15 lifetime sacks. At 32, he is still at the top of his game - incredible.

Dawk is certainly the best Safety in Eagle history and currently he is the best in the NFL. Dawk will hit you clean but violently.
WNSherrill 02/03/2005
The best free safety in the league in my opinion. I'm a Cowboys fan, but Dawkins can hit as hard as Roy Williams and can cover much better.

Brian Dawkins is at the topf his game. one of the top 4 at his postion, i'd say #2
