 | irishgit (146) 06/16/2005 | Very skilled, and largely under-rated and forgotten. Not in the top 5 heavyweights, but possibly a contender for the top 10. A true class act outside the ring, and one of the great humanitarians to have worn the title belt.

 | mebchicago (0) 04/05/2005 | Schmeling was the 2nd-greatest fighter of the 1930s after Joe Louis, who might be the all-time #1. His reign as champion should have been longer; Sharkey was a dirty and cowardly fighter (hiking up his belt to make legitimate blows look low, falling down and clutching his groin after getting hit in the head), and should not have been given the decision, as most writers of the time realized. Schmeling is the only man to have beaten Joe Louis in his prime. Not one of the all-time top ten in terms of power or speed, Schmeling truly excelled at uncovering an opponent's weaknesses, studying them, looking for a weak spot, and planning how to defeat them, just like Gene Tunney did with Dempsey. And let's say it again: Schmeling beat a young Joe Louis, who destroyed every other boxer he faced *that decade*. Five stars? You bet.

 | jaywilton (27) 04/30/2004 | Max Schmeling tends to be underrated as a boxer, given the way he took Joe Louis apart in their first fight and was probably robbed when he lost his heavyweight championship to Jack Sharkey. More importantly, he's probably the most unjustly maligned athlete ever-as the symbol of Nazi Germany. Schmeling's manager and most of his friend's were Jews and he saved Jews during a riot(Kristalnaught) in 1938(See the film Joe and Max) and reportedly during the Holocaust itself.

 | Mark McKee (0) 04/13/2003 | Schmeling is the only man to have defeated Joe Louis before his retirement. That puts him on a level that few heavyweight from any time frame can claim. During the 1930s he was second only to Louis.

 | Roy_Freddy (0) 03/19/2003 | Max Schmeling is a truly amazing human being and at age 97 is the oldest living world champion. Not enough could ever be written about how great a man Max Schmeling is.
If it would be possible to give someone a ten star rating , then Max Schmeling would deserve it.

 | StockyBrawler (0) 03/07/2003 | A great man and a very good fighter. He had the misfortune of fighting a very angry prime Louis in their second fight, and it probably ruined him. He was level headed and possessed very good counterpunching skills. His right hand was a force to be reckoned with.

 | Axel Melhardt (0) 02/27/2003 | He was the first european who challenged the great fighters from the USA. He was until his end one of the great personalities of boxing in the old world. And he was one of the many sportsmen who tried to fight against the Nazis in Germany. Not only a great sportsman but also a wonderful human being!!!
