 | Underspin (24) 12/05/2005 | In my view, Salon.com has declined in the past several years in their overall quality, writing and service. Initially I found the site to be rather edgy, urban and politically sophisticated. It offered regular columns from the likes of Camille Paglia, Christopher Hitchens and others, writers that I found to be insightful, witty and informative. Eventually the Salon had financial problems, and some of my favorite writers (including those above) no longer had running columns. Shortly thereafter, the site also switched to a "teaser" format, where it'd give you the first paragraph of a certain column then make you register as a paid subsciber if you wanted to read the rest. More recently they've gone to another format where you can read their columns for a day if you view a short commercial. Regardless, Salon's quality has certainly declined, and while it's still pretty decent (about on the level of Slate.com), in it's current state it's essentially a shadow of it's former self.
