I bought an 870 magnum on black friday. I own a mossberg 500A which
works great, but wanted to upgrade. The 870 magnum started to jam
when I tested it with different length shells. Basically the problem
starts with the loading of the shells. The alignment of the guide is
off as the shell is loaded in and it then gets nicked by the tube
which has a real sharp edge. I put a bevel on it which made it work
much better, but still no where near as good as the old (cheap) mossberg. I returned the 870 for store credit two hours later. Told
them wife thru a fit for buying another gun I didn't need. Hope this
helps.

I have a Wingmaster and acquired it from a relative probably around the late 70s. Fired it off and on throughout the years...EXCELLENT RIFLE! My rifle has a serial number. Does it mean anything? Could it be broken down? Unlike cars, their serial numbers can be broken down to year manufactured to paint color etc.

DO NOT DOUBT THE REPORTS. THE MOST RECENT 870 IS JUNK. I BOUGHT ONE TO SHOOT CLAYS AND IT WILL NOT EJECT A SPENT SHELL. I USED 4 DIFFERENT BRANDS OF SHELLS, HIGH BRASS ETC. THEY ALL JAM. YOU CAN NOT PULL IT OUT WITH YOUR FINGER IT IS IN SO TIGHT. THE RANGE WE SHOOT AT IS LARGE AND I HAVE NOW SEEN 5 870 EXP. PURCHASED IN THE LAST 4 WEEKS. EVERYONE HAS THE SAME SET OF PROBLEMS. SHELLS SWOLEN UP IN UNDER-BORED BARELL,SPENT SHELLS WILL NOT EJECT AND/OR ACTION LOCKED CLOSED.THIS IS NOT DUE TO TWIGS AND ALL OTHER SMART ALEC CRAP IN THESE REVIEWS. MY NEW 870 IS AT REM FOR REPAIR. I WAS TOLD WHEN I CALLED ABOUT TURN AROUND TIME THE TECH ADMITTED THEY HAVE TURNED OUT MISCALIBRATED BARRELS ON 10,000 SERIAL NUMBERS OF SHOTGUNS FROM 870 TO 1100 TO 1187 MOSTLY PRODUCED SINCE SPRING OF 07. SAVE THE SNEID REMARKS PUNKS. SOME OF YOU CAN BARELY READ AND WRITE I MIGHT ADD.

I own 6 870's with ages from about 50 years old to brand new with a couple of them being supermags and the only time I ever had a shell jam in any of them was when using certain types of shells. I've never had a problem with the guns themselves. The same shells that jammed the 870 also jammed my Mossberg 500's and 835's as well as my Winchester, Beretta, and Browning. Some shells can either be slightly incorrectly sized or deform upon firing causing it either jam the receiver or fail to eject all together.

I purchased the 870 Supermag last year during the middle of duck season. It jammed often. I figured I just need to get more comfortable with it. Now it is already the second week of duck season, I have gone out twice and I am still having the same problem. Can anyone help me? Any advice out there? I am not made of money so I don't think I can pick up a another shotgun before the end of duck season.

I owned a Winchester 1300 Defender (not for duck hunting), and it never once jammed on me. In fact, the recoil assisted the cycling of the pump action which made for quicker follow-up shots because it pushed the pump rearward. To complete the cycle all you had to do is push the pump forward and you were ready to pull the trigger.

I have 3 870s. The Super Magnum did not work well with Sellier&Bellot ammo, any other brand: no problem - no jamming - just point and shoot! I am happy with the 870 - simple - working - easy cleaning!

Great gun. Many people say it jams on here...it's the ammo, not the gun. Is a .22 a piece of junk because the bulk ammo I run through it jams and has duds? No, it's the ammo. I've had shells jam in the chamber of numerous shotguns. It's the ammo, not the gun. Of 6 people I hunt with none of us has ever had a problem with our 870's...pump get stuck every once in a while? Yeah, but we trace it to the shells we're all using. Once those shells are gone SURPRISINGLY no more problems. Don't blame the gun because the shell swells.

Bought a Remington 870 new last week... jammed on the 3rd shot! Took it apart... jammed again on the 3rd shot! Now its back with Remington for repair or whatever... waste of money. Had a Benelli Nova for 2 years... never jammed once. Bought it at Lebaron's in Ottawa... worst customer service ever... don't buy from Lebaron's!!!

Be very careful when ur buying 870 , coz they have lots of defected 870s in the market . problems like: pump jamming, shell ejection, empty shell stuck in the chamber, recoil.

I'd heard nothing but wonders about this "870 express super magnum." Six rounds after I bought my first the gun jammed solid. I took it apart in the field, prt it back together, then 4 rounds after that, jammed solid again. I took the gun back and exchanged for an identical gun. My new gun half jamms every 20 rounds or so. Enough that I have to put the stock on my hip and force the chamber open. I'm over 700 rounds into this gun and still waiting for america's "problemless workhorse shotgun," to break in. I love every thing else about the gun, that's why I'm scratching my head thinking what am I doing wrong. Would love any suggestions.

I've owned an early model 870 express magnum for roughly 10 years (probably closer to 8) and its had amazing reliability and performed flawlessly for as long as I've owned it. However its unsettling to hear that the recent models have been less than satisfactory.

I own both a Remingotn 870 and a Mossberg 500 and I've got to tell you threr are some ipmortant considerations that you have to look at especially if your left handed like me. The 870 in my opinion is definitly a better built gun. Their also much easier to field strip then a 500 but both the mossberg 500 and browning bps have a tang saftey and thats much easier to use when turkey hunting for us south paws. The 500 is also lighter then the 870. Just some things to consider when purchasing a new shotgun.

It mainly depends on the model that you are using. I have an 870 Marine Mag and it is a real nice gun. It lived up to my expectations of a quality shooting 12 Gauge. The reason I rated it a 4 and not a 5 is because of the fact that along with a long-lasting, well shooting gun, it's nice to have a more various option when choosing a gun. Most 870's are built the same although they are different model 870' they are exactly built a like. If there was a 4.5 it would receive it but there's not. I have yet to find a perfect 5.0

The Remington 870 is extremely simple in design. The solid steel receiver is practically unbreakable. Overall, this gun was designed to be a workhorse. Highly recommended.

A fabulous gun! I have two, and I am looking for a 20 gauge youth model for my son. I shoot trap and pheasants with mine. I dropped one in a bog once, pulled it out, cleaned it and it was fine.

I am purchasing a third 870, this one specially suited for deer hunting.

My 870 express super magnum camo, which I bought this year at wal-mart, fell out of a boat and into a creek about 5 feet deep when I was duck hunting last winter. I couldn't come out until 2 days later when I found a big enough magnet and I fished it out of the muck at the bottom. I spent about an hour cleaning everything and getting rust off but it shot without a problem afterwords. 500 rounds later it still works great and hasn't jammed one time. How's that for reliable

Remington has really screwed up with the new max gobbler with Knoxx stock. I own a gun business and bought one of these to try out. DO NOT BUY THIS GUN. Consider yourselves warned. It absolutely does not work as a turkey gun. The recoil system almost broke my jaw and busted the lip of my partner who shot it as well. Sent the gun back immediately.

I have several 870's in different gauges, but my favorite is a old clunker I bought in a gas station. I took the butt-plate off and there was a hunting license from the early 1950's with its federal duck stamp. I bought a 20 inch barrel for it, and it is really a handy gun to carry in your vehicle. It is indestructible.

The 870 Wingmaster is an awesome gun, BUT The 870 Express used to be one of the BEST guns you could buy for the money. I got one of the 870 Express Magnums when they first cam out. BUT, now I can not justify paying for inferior workmanship. I do not know what has happened, but recent 870 is not the 870 of years gone by. I have had several friends purchase the 870 Express after shooting mine and most of them have had problems with cycling, ejecting, etc. They are able to eventually work out the kinks, but one shouldn't have to work out kinks. I recently traded a Browning BPS 3.5"(Junk) for a Benelli Nova and I think the Nova is better than the 870 Express Magnum of today.

I suppose there are "better" guns out there, but the first gun I ever fell in love with was the 870. I own 2 Brownings, a Citori and a Belgian Superposed and I still shoot skeet with the 870. Go figure. I own 2 Wingmasters in 12 ga. and 1 in 20 ga. The 20 has an old torn slip-on recoil pad that is held on with duct tape. I keep it this way for the express purpose of seeing the looks on the faces of some stuck-up shooters with their Grade V 4 barrel set Brownings who like to look down their noses at us working class folk. So much fun to watch them steam when I shoot the pants off 'em with a pump gun with duct tape. Tried the fine Browning BPS a few times but still like "Ol' dependable" The best of all the pumps IMO.
Also of note. If you're gonna use the 870 hard, i.e. several rounds of skeet or trap every week for years you would do well to spend and extra $100 or so to keep a couple of action bar tubes in store, as after about 10 to 15 thousand rounds the action bars will detach from the tube, as they are held by a fairly tiny spot weld on each side. Other than this weak spot, it's a fantastic gun. I will NEVER own another brand of pump-gun. I plan to be buried with all 3 of mine!

About 15 years ago I bought a used Remington 870 w/ short riot barrel from a police surplus sale for $150.00. It has been my primary home defense weapon all this time. About 6 years ago I bought a used 26" modified choke barrel for $50.00 from a friend. I have been using the old 870 with the longer barrel for clay birds, and it works great!! I've taught my son and daughter to shoot it, and there's never been even the slightest hiccup with it. If all 870s are as good as mine then it is the best mass market shotgun ever. I want another one!

True the 870 is a bit over-rated, but value wise I feel it is probably the best single shotgun you could own. If you are only looking to buy one, it should be an 870 Express Super Mag w/ both barels. I've had for three years. As for jamming, the 870 is wonderful, the only jams I get are user initiated because my arms are tired and I didn't shuk the fore-end hard in a smooth crisp fashion, or the gun was at an awkward angle. The good news is when the 870 does jam, it's a freakin 12 gauge just reach in and pull the shell out. I'm most pleased with the versatility of mine. I can shoot smoothbore and rifled slugs, rem-choke on smoothbore barel, and I can fire even heavy magnum loads. 2 3/4, 3" 3.5" shells. Except in the prairies where distances are often too long, you can hunt anything with this one gun. Great bush gun. I'll never say a bad word about mine. Happy hunting!

I have had my 870 for over 20 years (26 years, in fact). It started out life as a 12 ga magnum with a 30" full choke barrel (these were the days before choke tubes). I used extensively for puddle jumping ducks for the first 2 years that I owned and I shot a lot of ducks with it. Shot a lot of trap as well. About 15 years ago I bought a 28" Remchoke barrel and have shot it a lot since then. I have probably run over 10,000 rounds through it (mostly hand loads). It is a fantastic gun. She is now semi retired. I bought a berretta Silver Mallard (A390) about 10 years ago and that has slowly taken over as my everyday gun. However, I did teach my 15 yr old to shoot with the 870 and now he uses it until I get my OU. He thinks he will get it for good at that point. Maybe, maybe not. She is like a good friend. I just can't say goodbye to her. Dale Neidhammer

Have owned my 870 for over 10 years, best pump gun ever! My gun has never misfired or jammed once! I have abused the crap out of this gun, it has seen salt marshes, deserts, flooded timber, forests, and just about anything else you can imagine. It has killed ducks, geese, dove, turkey, snipe, quail, rabbit, squirrel, and deer. The only possible complaint I could have is that the matted finish rusts too easily, especially here on the gulf coast. Excellent gun, I would suggest it to anyone.

own four, great guns, don't buy one in 16 gauge, I've run 500 rounds through it with at least 50 jams so far. (on the other hand i've run over 5,000 through my 12 gauge, not one jam yet, same thing with my 28 gauge 870) As reliable as they come, 99% of the time.

870 WINGMASTER! Yea...Yea....YEESSIIRRR! A GREAT ALL AROUND SHOTGUN!!!! I've owned mine since 1979...brand new...paid $183.00 with tax included heh, heh, heh! This gun has seen almost every type of hunting environment including the sporting clays scene. It has digested probably 30,000+ rounds, with 95%-98% being reloads. This simple, yet rock solid performer has NEVER EVER failed me. A friend talked me into buying the 870 Wingmaster over an 1100. I never looked back and often think of his wise advice when I see others having problems with their shotguns. Receiver cut from a solid steel billet and super simple take down. Remington knew they had a winner back in the late 50's.....that's why they're still makin'em to this day!!

I recently bought the 870 Express and have had absolutely no problems with it. I use it for clay shooting and score very well with it. It cycles smoothly and has never jammed. You can't go wrong with this gun. Just to mention to the person whos gun jammed right out of the box, you are supposed to clean shotguns before you shoot them.

Anyone who thinks an 870 is prone to jamming probably could get a hummer stuck in a Wal Mart parking lot...its impossibe and most likely is due to handfuls of dirt and twigs crammed down the reciever...you simply cant find a better work horse of a shotgun...

After some use and not abuse about 500 rounds. It started to jam when I tried to to pull the pump back. IT was like the shell was jamed in the barral or somthing. Not acceptible when there is dove flying over! The devil is in the details and I am dissapointed with the stamped crap and plastic. I will get rid of it and get a winchester.

The 870 is the gold standard against which all other magazine-fed shotguns must be compared. But it just does not fit me! I'm 5'11" 200lbs but I just cannot shoot these things. And I own 2 of them. My Winchesters are just the opposite. One of my 870's developed a crack in the wrist. Remington not only replaced the stock, they also replaced the forearm with a matching piece of beutiful walnut. Excellent service!

One of my favorite guns. I've had my 870 for about a year or so, but my father has one that he bought back in '78 that still works just as good as the day it came home. Both of them cycle smoothly and have never had a feed failure, and both have done extremely well in the field (I took 3 turkeys with mine last season. my father's gun has taken around 80 since he's had it). The gun also has a good solid feel to it (unlike the Mossberg's with their aluminum receivers and plastic trigger guards). Overall, I think this is probably the best pump action shotgun on the market.
