The best second baseman of his day, and one of the best ever. I'd put Joe Morgan ahead of him at the position, but probably no one else. A ferocious line drive hitter, he hit over .400 once and won the Triple Crown.

Lajoie combined grace in the field with power at the bat. He was well known for hitting the ball hard, Lajoie topped .300 in 16 of his 21 seasons, ten times batting over .350 for a lifetime batting average of .339

The only reason why Napoleon Lajoie is largely forgotten in the annals of history is because he played during an era of the deadball. A graceful-yet-determined hitter, he was among the few to achieve the Triple Crown. Not a flashy player, Lajoie was also an outstanding fielder. But his .422 average in a single season (which has since been topped by the .424 of the great Rogers Hornsby) is likely to stand the test of time in the American League.

Second baseman Napoleon Larry Lajoie combined grace in the field with power at the bat. Renowned for hitting the ball hard, Lajoie topped .300 in 16 of his 21 big league seasons, ten times batting over .350 for a lifetime average of .339. In 1901, making the jump from the Phillies to the Athletics of the new American League, Lajoie dominated the junior circuit. He captured the Triple Crown, led the League second basemen in fielding average and batted .422 - an American League mark that has yet to be topped. Nap Lajoie was inducted to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1937.

Outstanding Defense.. 2nd or 3rd best hitter of his day (Behind Wagner and later Cobb), Lajoie was a truly great player.

Second only to Rogers Hornsby in offensive ouput by a second baseman. 3,242 hits. .338 lifetime AVG. Hit .426 in 1901(4th all-time for a single season AVG). 3 batting titles for Philadelphia & Cleveland. The impressive fact is that he did that during Ty Cobb's era!
