A remarkable film for its time. Should remake it with a big budget and special effects and make every 17 to 19 year old male in the world watch it as a right of passage. One thing they really don't show in any war movie that real vets comment on is the true carnage of battle. The rest of this review is rated R.....
I had a Vietnam War vet room mate after we both got out of the Army and he was sent out to do a body-count after newly arriving in Vietnam. The area he was sent to was hammered with an artillery barrage. It was count the parts and devide by whatever. They had to bag up the pieces and estmate how much crud made a whole person. Well, he used to drink about a fifth of whiskey per night and still woke up screaming from nightmares most every night. If you could put his experience into a movie you could do a lot to stop war.

An absolutely timeless classic. The battle scenes are immense in their scope and impact. Winner of the best picture of 1930, this movie, like the machine gun whose inventer mistakenly thought his invention would mark an end to this kind of senseless carnage, did nothing to sway the powers that be from continuing to give future inspiration for moviemakers. The business of war is only good when shells and bullets are spent and young men die. The great military industrial complex thrives by supplying still more bullets, shells, and dispensable soldiers into the mix. This film was made with the idea that it be shown to the leaders of all nations hoping that they would see the futility of combat and shame them into bringing an end to this evil business. Think it's working yet?

Even in an age of spectacular realism and special effects, this remains my favorite movie. It captures the hopelessness of men who discover that war has made their existence trivial. Their last shred of humanity is their comradery as they face together the prospect of death every minute of every day along the trenches.

Not only is this movie great but the book is incredible too. I read the book first (and I always recommend reading the book before seeing the movie) and then saw the movie. It is so moving in all aspects of war, friendships, and it is also very sad. This is a movie (and a book) that is an important part of history and worth seeing (or reading).

This was a really powerful movie. I actually first saw it without realizing what it was until it was over. Filmed in 1930 the acting comes across today as naive just like the recruits the actors are portraying and adds to the drama of the film.

A true classic....the best anti-war movie ever made. It holds up well with realistic scenes of trench warfare and a first rate story line.
