I had my Mirena IUD inserted about a month ago, and I have to admit, the insertion was more painful than I expected. I'm 40 and have never been pregnant, so I'm sure that makes a difference. It didn't take long, though, probably about 5-6 minutes total, so I could stand it. Since then, I've had the very very light spotting pretty much daily that I anticipated and some light cramps and back pain. I think I just had my regular period, but it's kind of hard to tell, because it was pretty light as well. I'm guessing I'll have to wait a couple months or so to find out when my regular cycle is (as I've gotten older things are changing in that area anyway). But I highly recommend the IUD for women for whom other birth control methods can't or won't work (I can't take the pill for medical reasons). The short pain during insertion is a small price to pay for 5 years of pregnancy protection.

I LOVE my Mirena!!! I wish I had gotten one years ago. Insertion wasn't painful at all. I've never had kids, so I was a little nervous about the pain, but I took 4 Midol 30 min before I went and it was seriously like having a mildly uncomfortable pap smear. I talked to the nurse throughout the whole thing. It only took 2 minutes! I had cramping for about 20 minutes afterwards, like the kind you get on a period, but that was it! I highly recommend getting it inserted when you're on your period because your cervix is already slightly opened, so its less painful. I haven't had any problems with spotting or side effects, so I am a very happy customer, and so is my partner. I almost talked myself out of getting one because I had read so many horror stories on the internet. I don't understand why people thought it was so painful. I suppose everyone is different, but if you prepare yourself before hand it shouldn't be that bad. Ultimately, the decision should be made between you and your doctor. Do not let all the horror stories scare you. Remember that there is an even greater number of women out there that are perfectly happy with their Mirena, they're just not posting because they're out having fabulous sex :)

I got the paragard put in three days ago and it hurt. Not a lot but It was uncomfortable.after I got really bad cramping for about three hours that hurt.then it just went away and now there is no cramping. I was so sick of the hormones I would do it again if it means no kids for that long.I guess I will find out how the periods Will be.

I read all of these horror stories about Mirena and was very worried about getting it. I went ahead and got it put in a month ago, and I must say it has been the best birth control option I have tried so far. I have had no spot bleeding or any side effects at all to date. Intercourse is completely normal and I have had no mood swings, etc. I Love it

So I had Mirena inserted 4 months ago and have been on my period ever since. I had horrible cramps(as bad as labor)for three days after it was inserted and mild cramps for the first month, It really put a damper on my beach vacation. I finally went back to see my doc and he pap'd me, but said the bleeding might continue for another three months. He gave me a Rx for provera and said that might help shed the reast of the lining of the uterus. I will not be gatting this again in 5 years.

so.. i just have some questions. I have not been on any type of birth control in over 5 years, but need to start using something. I was interested in the IUD because I know I can't remember to take a pill everyday. I was just wondering... is sex weird with the whole string thing? Is it like, hold on, let me move my strings before we get started or what??

I got my Mirena in Sept. 2007, and 4 the 1st 3 months, there was disharge..liquidy, white. Thhe bleeding was sorta brown, and went on 4 a month or so, i suppose it was the thinning of my uterus? IDK...but, here it is, Apr. 2008, everything has been fine up until right now, I am haveing thick, yellowish disharge, w/ no harsh oder, i have been checked 4 all STD's so, it is not that. Not sure if i shhud get Monistat or what...b/c I am unsure if it is a yeast infection, or just a phase of the mirena insertion! somebody please help! I need some input from others, if u have experienced the same, or similar effects.

OOOOPS!! Somehow I deleted this post. This was my 2nd post and it was supposed to be dated January 3rd. Sorry guys!!! But here it is. Just not in the right order!!! It seems I can only leave ONE review per product. My first review is under the name SoFarSoGood and second and third reviews are below.

SECOND REVIEW: This is my second post. I found this site usefull when researching whether or not I wanted the Mirena so here goes. This review is 3.5 months after insertion of my Mirena. I had it put in to control very heavy bleeding and cramping. My period used to gush for 5 days and I had killer cramps. Since the Mirena, my period has turned into a 2 week affair. The plus side - Very very light! No more gushing! No more cramps!! I could wear one tampon all day if need be. It's THAT light! No weight gain! No breast tenderness! NO MOOD SWINGS!! Hubby is all into that!! Downside is that it lasts for 2 weeks. Granted it's more like spotting but it is cumbersome. I don't have to worry about any "accidents" though. I will gladly take a 2 week spotty period over gushing, cramps, nausea, sore boobs, weight gain, moodiness!! I am told that my periods will probably stop after a year. We will see.

THIRD REVIEW: This is my 3rd post! So far so wonderful!!! I had my Mirena put in 6 months ago. (my previous posts are under JSD as well) I have had several transformations. I went in for my pap a couple of months after it was inserted and my gyno couldn't find the string!! OH NO!! It seems the the Mirena was placed in the BASE of my uterus and as time progressed it moved on up into the top of my uterus. She had cut the string after insertion at the base of my cervix. So, as the mirena traveled UP into the uterus the string went with it!! She had me go to the ultrasound room and the ultrasound showed that the Mirena was there, just up into the uterus further. Down side is that I will have to have light sedation when she takes the Mirena out! UPSIDE is that I will not feel the Mirena being removed OR the new one inserted in!! So, this was a serendipity!! YAY!!!

My periods has become nothing but a pinkish tinge. NOTHING!! It lasts a bit longer but who cares. I don't even need a tampon really!! Far cry from the gushing and cramping and awfulness I used to suffer!! Yay!! I love it!!

Downside is my face is breaking out. Not crazy breaking out but I get some cystic acne around my chin and neck and a few on my cheeks and forehead. This happens RIGHT before I get my pinkish tinge period. But, being that I am 41, I could be just battling menopausal hormonal issues.

My sister is 10 years older than I am, 51, and is having menstrual issues STILL!!!! FIFTY-ONE!!!! She is considering the Mirena!! I have told her that she will most probably LOVE IT!!! I have recommended it to her.

I am sure the Mirena performs differently on different people, as do most drugs and medications.

I have learned a lot and educated myself by reading the reviews on this board.

My posts are only MY reactions to the Mirena. Please only use my reactions as a guide and NOT the gospel of how it will react with your own body.

Good luck!!!

JSD

I had my Mirena iud put in exactly one week ago. During the insertion the only pain i felt was cramping. It wasnt that bad. Afterwards i felt pretty faint, but laying down for a few minutes helped. But ever since i've had the iud i've had a pretty good flow. Its annoying. Im waiting to see when it stops. I've had mild cramps since it was put in as well. Intercourse was normal it didnt hurt, and the mirena was okay in there :)

I had the Mirena inserted about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I had a baby 9 months ago and had not started my period yet. I was on the mini pill and was afraid to have a 'whoops' pregnancy. The Mirena seemed like the optimal choice. I have had mild nagging cramps for 2 1/2 weeks, mild nagging bleeding for 2 1/2 weeks and have had an overall crappy attitude for 2 1/2 weeks. My legs are sore, my back is sore and I just don't feel right. I am going to give it another month or so, but if I don't start feeling better soon I'm going to go on the patch.

I has a Mirena inserted 6 days ago. Here's how it went.

My appointment was at 9am. So, I'm out of the house by 8:40,checked in and waiting by 8:55am. I sat down, opened my book and the nurse called me back. Fast! She took my weight and took me into my room for vitals. So it's 9am exactly now and she's already setting up the tools for my Mirena insertion. I changed out of my jeans into the annoying sheet that you have to hold on. Within seconds, the doc came in.

It was a fairly quick procedure. She had me lay back and she inserted the "duck". I really have no clue what she was doing. I felt some type of a pinch somewhere in there and then I think she put in the Mirena inserter. I felt some discomfort and a few more pinches. There was no pain that I wasn't able to talk over and ignore. About a minute later she took the "duck" out and I was done! Apparently I did great. She said some women scream and writhe in pain during and after. I admit I have a high tolerance for pain. I was in my car driving home at 9:25!

I was told not to be surprised if I have spotting for the next 3 months. After that it should even out again and may even quit my period altogether after/around a year. There is also no side affects that should bother me at all! I SHOULD keep my sex drive! I have spoken to 2 women who have recently had Mirena's installed and they have said they feel as though their sex drives have become stronger. I'm anxious to see how I'm affected.

So far I have only had light bleeding and some cramps. Nothing a few ibuprofen can't handle though! Two days after, I had no cramping at all. Now on day 6, I have no more spotting either!

So far I want it, but I've never had kids. Anybody that has not had kids have an opinion for me?

I usually have cramping during my period for the first day or 2.

i had the paragrad copper T IUD inserted 3 weeks ago. the insertion was painful in my experience. Plus the doctors had so much trouble inserting it because my cervix was just not cooperating. I had to go back the next day to re-do the insertion after they gave me a pill to take that night to soften i guess my cervix.
I spotted for 3 days then bled for 12 days. Bleeding was not heavy and i did not experience any cramping at all.

I was hesitant of getting the IUD at first because of all the reviews i read online. But I thought to myself that every women are different and i will not lose anything to give it a try and see how it will work out for me. So far it has been great.

I had my Mirena IUD inserted today. I was really nervous going in because of some of the reviews I read that stated that the insertion was painful. I was relieved to find that it was not painful for me at all and the entire process wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be. For the most part it was like having a routine pap. The only difference for me was that there was mild cramping for a second or two during the actual insertion. The whole thing was over shortly after that. In total it took about 5 minutes at most. I have a very low tolerance for pain and honestly it wasn't bad at all. I did however take the recommended pain medication prior to the insertion and I was on day 5 of my cycle. Those factors are supposed to help make insertion easier. Eight hours later and I'm feeling fine. I'm slightly crampy but ok and I'm really excited about not having to worry about birth control for another 5 years. It's probably too early to tell if there'll be any side effects... but for now it works for me.

I had the paragard inserted in 2000 after my first child. I literally had 0 side effects. No heavy bleeding, no cramping, nothing. 4 years later I had it removed and got pregnant with my second child. Once my second child was born, I had the paragard inserted again. This time there ARE side effects. I get pretty bad cramping, heavy periods, pms. BUT, I don't have to remember to take a pill and I have no hormones going through my body so it's worth it for me.

I had my Mirena insterted about 4 days ago. The insertion process was not pleasant at all! I didn't expect the pain and complications that I experienced. The actual insertion wasn't too painful just bad menstrual cramping, it was after the insertion that things got worse. I got up from the table to get dressed and felt like I was going to pass out, I sat down in a chair and just couldn't get comfortable because of the cramping. I went to check-out and while standing at the desk I felt faint again and had to be taken back to a room to lay down. While laying on the table again I was in pretty bad pain, no matter how I would move I couldn't get comfortable. Then I started feeling nauseas, shortly after I began to vomit. The doctor came back to check on me and said that was a normal but rare response. So just be warned you may get sick shortly afterwards! My doctor forgot to tell that side effect so I wasn't expecting it at all. I had to have a friend drive me home. After getting home I was still crampy but no where near as bad as it had been. Four days later I am still crampy I take Ibprofen about 3 times a day, its not horrible cramping just slightly uncomfortable. I have had very little light spotting. My side effects may be more uncommon due to the fact that I have not had a child yet and my uterus was just at 6cm. The preferred depth for an IUD candidate is 6-9cm. So far I'm happy with my decision, I'm waiting to experience my first period with it and waiting on my husband to return from Iraq next month to see how/if it will affect intercourse. I'll return with a update in a few months.

I just got my Mirena coil inserted today and it wasn't nearly as painful as the reviews i read said it might be. I took lots and lots of Ibprofen and i asked my doctor for numbing gel. This made all the difference. I have been cramping on and off since this afternoons insertion, but nothing unbearable. Overall a fairly easy experience.

I just got a Mirena reinserted about a month ago. The doctor that inserted mine didn't wait until I was on my period. It took her 30 minutes to insert it because I didn't have a vaginal birth so my cervix never dilated. I had a c-section and because of the that she had to take 3 metal rods and dilate my cervix herself. Having my stomach cut open did not even compare to the pain I experienced when I had my Mirena put in. Other than the insertion, I love it! No worries! So girls, if your doctor tells you that he or she can insert the Mirena at any time, tell them you want to wait until you are on your cycle! My first time having it didn't hurt because I was on my cycle and that is a HUGE difference!

I've had my Paragard for 3 yrs. Thinking of switching to the Mirena to help w/ my periods...now that I'm not on the pill I'm back to only having about 10 - 14 days between periods. Other than that I love my iud. More intense cramping w/ periods but nothing a tylenol won't take care of. The insertion wasn't comfortable @ all for me, but it's worth it in my opinion. Seems to be more discharge w/ an iud, which i was told to expect. I've really had no problems, if it wasn't for my periods I'd keep the Paragard.

I've had my Paragard for 6 months now and love it. The insertion was much easier (less painful) than I thought it would be based on what I'd read. It only took a couple of minutes and I was done. My cramps were worse in the first few months after the insertion, but now everything is back to normal and I don't even know it's there. I totally recommend the Paragard - no hormones (or hormone side-effects)!!!

I had my Mirena put in 5 days ago and so far so good! It was uncomfy going in. I have a tilted uterus so that might have been an issue. I had NO cramping after insertion and very little blood loss. I had it put in on the last day of my period and my DR. said that your cervix is more open and relaxed then. My best bud has had her Mirena for 5 years now and LOVES it and my next door neighbor has had hers in for 6 years and raves about it. I had to try it and I am very happy with my choice so far. My hubby is neutered. I did the Mirena for period control not birth control. Hopefully this will help. I am 40 and the menapause irregularity was kicking in and driving me nuts. I know 2 women that the Mirena just did not work for. They had continual cramping and had it taken out. Supposedly it works best for moms that have had vaginal births though my best bud had 2 c-sections and loves hers. She had cramping for the first 12 hours after insertion though.

I guess it's a personal choice and every woman will react to it differently. It's worth a try. I don't even know it's there!!! Yay!!!

I have to say, it is not a good idea to post reviews with information that is incorrect. Sadly, much of the information you read on line is not correct, and I hate to see it added to. In fact, the copper IUD works by causing an inflammatory reaction in the uterus. This reaction brings about all of the cytokines and phagocytic cells associated with inflammation, and does not allow the sperm to make it up to the egg to fertilize. There is in fact NO abortion of any kind. Also, scarring of the uterus is a very rare condition that does not occur from the IUD, but actually occurs when women with IUDs get PID.

I also had the Paraguard for a least a year now. I've been extremely scared over this past year that I might end up pregnant. I begged my doctor to please have my tubes tide but he suggested for me to get the IUD since Im only 29 and with one kid. My last period was Oct 24th, right now I should be ovulating, but I have major major cramps and bledding, I just made an appointment for thursday, hopefully it's nothing major, but i keep thinking that Im pregnant....Oh Lord!

I've had my Paraguard for just over a year. I've had no problems but feel very paranoid after reading so many horror stories. Seriously considering having it removed and getting my tubes tied instead. Can't stop worrying about what's going on in my uterus.

My mother had a copper T for many years. She had her last kid at age 26 and had the copper T (having it replaced every 10 years) until she reached menopause with no problems at all. My aunt had a copper T for more than 10 years. My sisters in law both have had them for more than 5 years without complications. I had my first copper T placed after my first child was born and kept it for 4 years. My periods got a little heavier, no cramps. I had the IUD removed to have my second child and got pregnant almost immediately. I got a new copper T placed a few weeks after giving birth. I've had it for almost 4 years and have no complains, except for the heavier periods, nothing major. I'm thinking of having my copper T (no hormones) replaced by a Mirena (has hormones) to eliminate my periods, but I have to research some more.
It's important to have yearly physicals when you have an IUD to make sure that everything is OK, and to have the IUD replaced on time.

I ended up in the hospital after having an IUD put in. After a couple of days of having it in I felt for the string and could not feel it. I was having sharp shooting pains across my abdomen and felt light headed at times. I called the doctors office and they got me in for a check up. Of course they could not find the string either so they sent me in for an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed a lot of fluid in my uterus and a white shadow. So they just said that it was because it was so new and it has not settled yet. After another week went by I was still in tons of pain, so I went to the E.R. They treated me for a P.I.D and sent me on my way with some pain pills and told me to follow up with my doctor. I finally got in with my doctor and he proceeded to try and remove it in the office with an IUD retriever. After going through more torture he finally decide to schedule me for surgery. It was supposed to be a quick in and out procedure but after doing some xrays they found out that the IUD was in my abdomen, not my uterus. They said the ultrasound can give false negative reports sometimes so the white spot they were seeing in the ultrasound was not the IUD. Well after 3 hours of scoping my abdomen and vagina they finally found it. It turns out it had traveled through my fallopian tube and out into my abdomen. Needless to say it was the most traumatic experience I have ever had and would not recommend an IUD to anyone. It is simply to risky!!

i had the mirena inserted in may 05...five months after giving birth to my second child...while it seemed like an excellent choice at the time i now wish i had researched it further...i had continuous spotting from may 05 to aug 05...i began experiencing horrible low back pain in june and abdominal fullness with frequent urination by mid july. i was not sure what the cause was and saw both an md and gyn. the gyn did a manual check of the iud and told me that it was fine and was not causing my problems. my md did not believe my symptoms, told me that i had fibromyalgia and gave me zoloft for anxiety and depression. i never experienced these symptoms; only some indecision about a big move to another country. i had the mirena removed today after about a month of whole body pain that radiated from my low back to my upper back, arms, legs, feet, toes and fingertips. it has been excruciating. the gyn i saw today did an in office ultrasound and found that the mirena was inserted too low and was attempting to expel itself from my body. this is what was causing my pain!!!! please do not use this device. i am still experiencing pain in my legs, fingers, and feet. the back pain was relieved immediately after the mirena was taken out. i had to move to a third-world country to find out what was going on and receive adequate care. the doctors in the us treated me with disbelief and kept watching the clock during my visit. they tried to make me feel as if i was crazy/making it all up.

This is a great choice if you've already had children, but too young for tubal ligation or capable of changing your mind about more kids. I had a horrible pregnancy and don't ever want to suffer like that again. I was on the pill, but it's such a hassle. I got the Depo shot and I gained 10 lbs., became an out right b@#$%*, and couldn't use my arm for a week. After doing my research I decided on the IUD and talked to my GP about it. She said the problems in the 70's were caused by one brand of iud's and they were withdrawn immediatly. Unlike the BC patch still available even though it's causing serious problems. She said the problems now a days are caused by improper insertion and Dr.'s not being "selective" as to who gets them-not having given birth or being promiscuous. I've had mine for 3 years now and it's great. I'll be refitted next month and can't be happier. It also does not cause an abortion, it prevents a pregnancy before it can happen.

Ok for some, I tried it and kept mine in for 1 year. I know some women love them and have no probs aside from a bit more bleeding, but my body just could not tolerate it. Intense cramping, never fully went away- seriously painful for me. I had the placement checked and everything was ok, my uterus just was not very happy with me. I was on Ibuprofen for the entire time till I gave up and had it removed. I had pain after sex as well, my fiancee pretty much said the IUD was a birth control method because for that year it killed our sex life! He had a vas later and we are both very happy!!

Free at last! After trying pills, patch, and ring, I have found the right method for me. I love my Copper IUD, no questions about it. Yes i have cramping during my period. and yes there has been longstanding debate about how the iud actually works, but that debate has been acquitted over and over by research proving that IUD's do not work by causing abortions but rather prevent sperm and egg from meeting. It's not the right method for everyone, but for the millions of women across the world who fit the criteria, (it is very popular in other countries) it is great. After much prayer and interrogation, i finally decided to try the copper IUD (Paragard). i'm very satisfied. I am hormone-free and happy!

This is one of the worst contraceptions ever invented. In fact what it does is give you abortions automatically. The fetus grows into the IUD, and aborts. That's why a lot of women have painful periods with this inside of them. Also isn't healthy because it scars the uterus.

i had one of these when i was younger. it was supposed to last 7 years but my body rejected it after 3 years and it almost put me in the hospital and they feared it had caused me to have a tubal pregnany which thankfully not the case but i was sick anyway

It's up to her,but several women told me that they're uncomfortable and they can also shift out of place.Again, this method puts all the discomfort and risk on the lady.

other than the diaphgragm this is my ultimate favorite. I can't seem to tolerate the pill (weight gain and mood swings in particular). This doesn't affect that at all, like the diaphgragm. It is so convenient and lasts for years and requires no preparation. Virtually as effective as sterilization! The drawback for me w/the copper T was extremely heavy periods (graphic: leaving a trail of blood into the shower as it would literally pour out of me! sick! had to use double protection and even then that wasn't enough). But that doesn't ha ppen to everyone. I think I became anemic on it. I later tried Mirena w/progesterone in it. I gained 5 lbs not a big deal I can handle that. The problem is no matter what I coudln't have an orgasm. It was a nightmare. My O's are important to me. Sorry to say! That is also a rare side effect! Compared to the pill, if you are using the pill I should say, you may have even better sex than before, since many times the pill dulls sex drive for women! So the IUD is definitly worth a try! I had no cramps w/periods or any other time as well, although insertion was a bitch and my very first IUD perforated due to me not having a period for over a year. (not enough estrogen and my uterus became atrophic, so the IUD perfed when it was inserted). Anyway, I still loved it enough I got two more after that! Try it!

i had terrible cramping over the last 15 yrs, i went to the Dr. and she tried to get me to take the pill, but i know im to lazy to take them on time, and since my insurance covered the cost of the IUD ($500) I decided to go w/ that instead, im glad i did i havent had any cramps and after explainin to ppl that the IUD of today isn't of the 70's which was still good in the 70's only one brand of copper was bad that which affected only a small amount of women but was exploited by the media gave it a bad reputation. I would of rather gotten the Norplant but i was about 5 yrs to late for that. I like the IUD over the pill or patch it has less side affects and i dont have to be tied to a script every month.

Put it in and forget it for 5 to 10 years. Take it out and get pregnant within a month. What's not to like?

Can be very reliable for some women but too many drawbacks in my opinion, like uterine puncture and the device being discharge and not to mention pregnancy with that thing still inside the women. Pretty out-dated method of birth control

I have had an IUD for 5 years, and it has been effective with very few side effects. The new IUDs are much safer than their 70's counterparts, as they are monofilament instead of multifilament. They are recommended for monogamous women, and usually are better tolerated by women who have had children. I had very little pain with insertion and no increase in cramping with cycles. I got pregnant 2 months after starting the pill, so this is a good trustworthy method for me.

A primitive and dangerous form of BC. This was very popular in the 1970s but mostly fell out of favor. And for good reason.

I had to stop using the pill, and this seems to be an effective method. The drawback is incredible cramping when first inserted and during the first periods thereafter. It abates over time.
