He is too over rated

your best best soccer player in the world

Here is one reason that makes me respect Beckham as a professional sportman. After some successful years playing for Manchester United in the English Premier League, he decided to go to

Spain

to play for the Real Madrid, a team full of world soccer super stars (Ronaldo, Zidane, Raul, Figo, Roberto Carlos ...). A lot of ego there….

Beckham was always mentioned by teammates and sport reporters as a great professional. He was the first showing up and the last leaving the practice court. He was very respectful with his rivals inside and outside the court.

In addition to that, the last season he was playing for Real Madrid, the head coach was Fabio Capello (current

England

national team coach). Capello announced, in the middle of the season, that he didn’t like Beckham’s game and that Beckham would never play for the team again ( this is one of the reasons Beckham decided to sign for the Galaxy)

Beckham never responded to Capello's announcement, and he kept training everyday, sometimes separated from his teammates, in a different court, and sometimes with the Real Madrid second team (this is a development team).

After a couple of months in that situation, and seeing that Beckham acted as a model professional, Capello changed his mind and started to use Beckham again. The team didn't play well, but the courage showed by all players, especially by the English, made the team win the Spanish League over the Barcelona of Ronaldihno.

I know nothing about soccer. I should make that clear at the outset, along with the fact that this rating is of Beckham, the person - not the player.

That said, as a serious sports fan, I consider Beckham a sellout. If Lebron James left the NBA to play in an undisputably inferior hoops league overseas in pursuit of a paycheck, I would lose respect for him.

At his prime the best right midfielder in the world, David Beckham has brought joy to his fans and glory/wealth to his clubs. While his Real Madrid career was less than stellar, his influence on the game was nonetheless massive, and although his contribution to the sport off the field was far more than his on-the-field play in the later stages of his career, it nevertheless ushered in a new age of soccer in the world, one in which the public, the press and the pitch are all inextricably connected.

I think David Beckham is a very talented soccer player. I have been playing soccer for a year and Beckham has become one of my idols.

I don't know much about soccer, but I'll bet you dollars-to-dougnuts, he is good, but overrated in a way that Joe Namath was good, but overrated (though injuries did him in).

He might not be spectacular as he's not a striker (except this wonderful free kick against Greece sending them to the World Cup !) but he achieves a great work in the midfield, delivering winning passes for the strikers and suppporting the defenders; he's one of those who runs the most during a game. If only there was less fuss about his private life...
