Black & Decker WM425 Workmate Portable Work Bench 3

Recently purchased one of these hoping to use for several simple home projects, (and regrip my golf clubs too)

Despite all the warnings to the contrary, ordered it from Amazon and yes, it did arrive with some minor damage

The illiterate, unintelligible "assembly instructions" were a challenge - not only for me but also for B&D phone support - who had to keep me on hold for 10 minutes while they clarified the 2nd and 3rd instructions

For instance - the "jaws" (the three boards that comprise the top of the workbench) are attached to the bench frame by an unusual mechanism, that is only vaguely referenced in the instructions

Once past that, it seems to be very versatile and easy to use - but don't hope for any instructions from B&D - trial and error will serve you better

The workmate serves great as a portable workbench. The workbench is very sturdy and can hold any tool. I am not a heavy duty handyman but when I do a task I hate leaving tools laying on the ground and forgetting where I put them. The workmate saves me time by giving me a bench where I can set my tools while performing a task. This is the perfect bench for light weight handy folks.

First I need to preface this review with the admission that I am an absolute incompetent (klutz) when it comes to tools and to making things. Yet, despite it all, I have a barn, storage shed (two of these) and garage that are just packed with various implements that I have picked up over the years; from stores on a whim and at auctions. I have absolutely no clue as to what many of these tools are used for...I just like having them around for some reason. Secondly, you could search the land far and wide to find an individual more incompetent in handling tools, building things and fixing things. Now, that being said....

My son in law, several nephews and a couple of nieces are in construction, remodeling, wood and iron crafting. Between this group of talented people, they have five or six of these wonderful little work stands. I was constantly borrowing from them and finally broke down and bought one myself some time back. It was the best tool buy, other than a hammer and saw I ever made.

Let me insert a remark right here: If I can figure out how to work one of these and figure out how to put it to practical use, then most of the population of the known universe can also. Trust me folks, I am absolutely clueless.

Once I had this handy little workmate I kept (and still do) finding more and more uses for it. I build a lot of birdhouses, birdfeeders and do some picture framing. I use this little adjustable table all the time. I also do a lot of art work which calls for the use of ceramic tiles, wood, gourds, sticks (I make and carve canes), and the list goes on.

This adjustable work stand is not only good for the professional (hey, I have seen them use them in ways I will never understand), but it is wonderful for the hobbyist. It is easy to store, not taking up much room and once you actually read the directions (something I am pretty bad about not doing), the working of the thing is a snap.

Again, if I can find many uses for this tool and with my very limited abilities find it easy to use, can you imagine how those of you who actually know what they are doing will enjoy and find even more things to do with it that myself?

I just revcd this item from Target thru Amazon at a great price. If you have Triple-A Auto club you can get another 10% off by going thru Target. Item ordered on a Friday; shipped Sat; recvd Thurs in good shape. Other reviews commented on damage in shipping, but not a problem with purchase thru Target. Box is OK; a little flimsy, but handled the shipping in great shape, no box damage. WM425 is really not hard to put together. Took all of about 30 minutes to put together once I laid out the parts. Metal frame is Ok; it appears sturdy enough for the around-the-house jobs I have in mind. Dual crank mechanism appears like an after-thought to me. I'm not certain you really need it. If it breaks, I think I can fix it or do without it. Overall construction is good. I don't think I would want something much heavier, it is suppose to be portable. Compared to the table saw stands that come with Dewalts, Sears, Delta's and others, it is really alot better. Look forward to using it to support Miter saw & Dewalt table saw just purchased.
