Haifa is a port city in Northwestern Israel, located on the Mediterranean Sea, at the foot of Mt. Carmel. Haifa is the main city in Northern Israel, and is the nation’s main center for oil refining. Modern Haifa came into prominence around the late 1700’s, but did not grow rapidly until the 20th century, with the development of its port and oil industries. Haifa is the world center of Baha’ism, and is home to the shrine Bab. Although an Israeli city, Haifa also maintains populations of Muslim, Christians, and Druze. The estimated population of Haifa is 300,000.
